View Full Version : I got 26.2 mpg this week-end !!
Kabura 05-31-2009, 07:41 PM I just came back from a week-end trip and I barely broke the 9 l/100km barrier for the first time with my 8. I got a nice 8.99 l/100km (or 26.2 mpg) for the whole trip. That means 667.4 km (or 417 miles) per tank. I know it's definitely NOT a record but it's a nice change from the 15-16 l/100km I usually get with combined city-highway driving. And to think that about 50% of the journey was through the mountains!
SpIcEz 06-01-2009, 12:55 AM J'te crois pas. :Eyecrazy:
Sti, j'ai de la misere a passer le 350km colisse.
Ross_Dawg 06-01-2009, 01:01 AM Damn, that's impressive! I've never achieved that in my 8 :(
I thought my 21mpg was good... :suspect:
DarkLord7854 06-01-2009, 02:33 AM *looks at his pathetic 12mpg achievement.. up from 11* *sigh*
sanyok 06-01-2009, 04:13 AM *looks at his pathetic 12mpg achievement.. up from 11* *sigh*
its okay man she'll get better as time goes by and plus 9k rpm is fun
XlYesterdaYlX 06-01-2009, 08:22 AM the highest MPG i ever got was like 19...all highway baby. the elusive 20's...are elusive.
alnielsen 06-01-2009, 08:33 AM I just got 248 miles (14 gal) on my last tank. That has been the best I have been able to achieve to date. That was with a lot of high speed & rapid acceleration driving. If I tried an eco run....naaa.
wow. impressive number for sure. I only hope after break-in, I will get a little better number than 350kms (220miles).
2tone 06-01-2009, 01:41 PM nice! you can get really good numbers if it's pure highway and you keep it under 3800-4000 rpms. i think i got 24.8 one time with 90% highway.
not to potentionally burst your bubble, but are you running non oem tires/wheels. if your overall diameter is different then oem, it will throw off your "miles"...I THINK. not sure on this, but i think the trip and odo rely on that figure...so your numbers might be inflated a bit. someone correct me if i'm stupid :P
CarAndDriver 06-01-2009, 02:45 PM How fast were you going? And you must have had a big tailwind. :)
Oh yeah, what size tires/rims are you using like 2tone mentioned?
PSTNLSS 06-01-2009, 02:50 PM This thread reminds me of my wet dream from the other night of a 25mpg tank.
Sighs and thinks he is only getting 17mpg

Exactly. I set the cruise-control to 105 km/h (65.2 mph) for the whole trip and I was running at around 2600 rpm. My driving was far from agressive. In fact, I did this to settle a 'bet' that I could not do the 350 km trip without refueling. I did it with just a click over half a tank. :ylsuper:

You're absolutely right. But I am still running my 18'' OEM Dunlops. They only have 16 000 km on them. So I guess the numbers still stand.
JinDesu 06-01-2009, 03:37 PM Man, you make me jealous. I hit 23mpg on a mostly highway trip from NY to PA, and I don't think I could improve on that too much more.
CarAndDriver 06-01-2009, 03:42 PM The OP must have been getting passed up by the minivan and Camry drivers at 65.2MPH. :)
cjkim 06-01-2009, 04:13 PM 65.2 mph @ 2600 rpm?
is that what the autos run at or am i missing something here...
Ross_Dawg 06-01-2009, 04:34 PM yeah that seems low...
at 72mph we're at 3700rpm right?
delhi 06-01-2009, 04:57 PM What gas did you use? What oil weight?
I can hit ~480km with a full tank of gas in mixed city/hwy. That's about 12.5l/100km. And this is with redlining activities on some drives.
Eelfinn_Ty 06-01-2009, 05:20 PM 65.2 mph @ 2600 rpm?

My 04 manual puts me at 40mph in 6th at 2000rpm.
2tone 06-01-2009, 05:32 PM awesome!!! the one time i got almost 25 mpg was MOSTLY highway, but i definitely went above 70 a couple times. it's SOOOOO hard to keep it at around 65 mph!! ha ha, like caranddriver said i get passed by priuses and minivans and camrys and...well, everyone!! :)
so if i'm running 245/40/18...i know it's not MUCH of a difference than oem but it is a tad bit shorter...then my mpg record of 24.8 is slightly HIGH, right? shorter overall diameter = artificially high mpg? damn, i guess i can't quote that then, i'll have to figure out what it was and go for 26mpg...ha ha
CyberPitz 06-01-2009, 05:36 PM I was driving just under 60mph and in 60th gear and was able to get above 26 mpg *just around 28 really*. I was so proud, but then decided that I liked reving it up a lot more.
RXeckless 06-01-2009, 05:53 PM Is this some sort of conspiracy your all in on! 400 km all highway the best I've ever gotten(100-120 kph). My average mostly highway in the GTA 320 to 350 at the low fuel light.
Is this magic or fringe science 8 don't get that kind of mpg! it's a rotary.
Please stop this madness, I've tried and tried to get better mpg, it just does not happen. I gave up a long time ago even trying. Just enjoy IT! IMO
2tone 06-01-2009, 06:25 PM haha^ awesome.
i only "try" to get good mileage on my drives from austin to dallas and back (about 200 miles each way). just b/c i'm never in a big rush and i like to see if i can do better than the last time. but around austin i don't really even think about it.
philipchan 06-01-2009, 06:35 PM I got 280 out of my tank last week...
The first time that high...coz I got too many speeding tickets
never over 80...mostly 73 on the freeway
and some local
280 miles and still have some left...put around 12.7 gals
around22MPG....my best already @.@
26???? no way...
cjkim 06-01-2009, 06:38 PM My 04 manual puts me at 40mph in 6th at 2000rpm.
...?
that wasn't my question :banghead::lol:
philipchan 06-01-2009, 06:42 PM 65.2 mph @ 2600 rpm?
is that what the autos run at or am i missing something here...
2004 4 speed auto
3000rpm 73mph
White_Shadows 06-01-2009, 06:46 PM Yeah I just started watching mine....14.97mpg it's just not cool at all. I was reading everyones averages in the 15-20 range and I'm falling just flat of bottom.

i know your pain
Ross_Dawg 06-01-2009, 06:54 PM lol... when I first bought the car I was consistently getting 12-13mpg. Granted it was all city driving lol
Now, I get 18-20 mpg but most of it is highway mileage
philipchan 06-01-2009, 06:58 PM I got 26~28 from my .....daily drive V6 MX-3 :ylsuper:
1.8 V6, smoked the 1.8 TURBO Jetta, hell yea!
93 1k car VS 03 10k car....my buddy almost cried, lol
shazy 06-01-2009, 07:15 PM Wow... I was actually going to make a thread about this. 50/50 highway city, I get about 23.7mpg :) But I was in a massive traffic jam and did a huge amount of short trips. I'm sure I can get more than 500km from our measely 55litre tank.
Filled up 52 litres of 91 Ultramar.
Using 5w30
I don't baby it. Daily redlines, pretty hard turns, etc. But I use cruise control on highway
Stock Potenza's... 225/45zr/18
6 speed manual
470km on 50 litres or 13.2gallons which is about 23mpg
Missing anything else?
EDIT: Forgot to mention that my MPG gets better everytime for some reason... when I first go the car I got exactly 19.5mpg, now it's going higher and higher. Maybe it's due to cleaning up all the oil in the intake?
Kabura 06-01-2009, 07:49 PM The OP must have been getting passed up by the minivan and Camry drivers at 65.2MPH. :)
Lol! You betcha! But I didn't mind much.
Well maybe a bit.
Nah, not really.
Who am I kidding? I did cheat sometimes and passed them at 150 km/h (93 m/h) uphill, just to show them what my 8 was made of (and also to heal my ego somewhat :)) 'But it was all part of an experiment' lol
Kabura 06-01-2009, 07:55 PM 65.2 mph @ 2600 rpm?
is that what the autos run at or am i missing something here...
Yup! Finally, the ATs have something over the MTs!
Boy, am I gonna get flamed for this!
(Ducks and runs for cover)
carcrazy95 06-01-2009, 08:27 PM I regularly get 23-24 mpg in steady highway driving, cruising at 70-72 mph (above 75 mph it falls off noticeably).
stayfrosty 06-01-2009, 11:35 PM 3rd gear is 1:100 mph to rpm so 30mph = 3000rpm. 6th gear is 1:50 so 30mph is 1500 rpm 65 mph should be 3250 rpm ect....
RX26b 06-02-2009, 12:31 AM How are you canadians calculating MPG when you full up by the liter? And secondly, are you using an american gallon or the imperial?
I just don't see how a stock car gets anywhere near 26, even if the've got the cruise on 60ish.

I just don't see how a stock car gets anywhere near 26, even if the've got the cruise on 60ish.I've gotten 26-28 mpg with very conservative, all-highway driving at 65 mph and US gallons on my MT. Pretty boring, but it is possible. Best I've seen reported here is 29 mpg.
Kabura 06-02-2009, 08:13 AM How are you canadians calculating MPG when you full up by the liter? And secondly, are you using an american gallon or the imperial?
Good point since I did not specify which one I used. According to this site http://www.euronet.nl/users/grantm/frans/fuel.html my 8.99 l/100 km equals to 26.2 mpg (US) or 31.4 mpg (Canadian). It really is confusing with all those different standards :Eyecrazy:

take whatever amount you fill up at the station / 3.785 = gallon.
(50L/3.785 = 13.21 gallon)
take whatever km your trip meter tells you / 1.6 = mile.
(350km/1.6 = 218.75 miles)
218.75mile/13.21gallon = 16.56MPG
Wow, I just realize my first tank of gas has better mileage than I thought. :) :evil_laug I was expecting 14mpg for break in period. :p

I grew up calculation meters and liters. But I found mpg makes more senses. :p
I think it's screwed up by using liters/100km (liters needed for 100km).
If they use kms/liter (kms ran from 1 liter of gas) would be easier to understand.
It's reverse of mpg in idea. :dunno:

Yeah... for awhile I was calculating imperial and I was like 28MPG?! How was that possible? Then I calculated it to US standards and was a miserable 23-24mpg. Going to try to see the best I can get.
911SC 06-06-2009, 07:12 AM A few weeks ago we took a trip to Cape Cod with two friends. Cruise control set at 72 mph, the Acura CL-S got 32mpg, the rx-8 got 24mpg and the 911, a 30 year old car with no cruise got 28mpg. So, twenty-something is possilble in the Mazda. You just can't have too much fun while doing it.
2nd tank of gas on my 6mt mostly city I got 17.5 mpg. It's getting better mpg than I thought it would be. :)
