View Full Version : Fuel rate for RX8....

I have the same economy with my new 2.4 litre Grand Vitara .....!

My 2.4L Camry (12.5L/100km) is only marginally better than the RX8 (14.2L/100KM).
I think the Camry or the G Vitara is way too heavy for the 2.4 donk, V6 version will have better fuel economy over the 2.4.

This sounds like the logical approach to the situation to me... The RX8 is a fairly lightweight car, and the motor is known to be fuel inefficient... It is a design drawback to the motor.
takahashi 05-10-2009, 04:20 AM When I first own a car a litre of unleaded costs 59 cents....
My RX-8 does 16L/100km, mostly in road speed, it does not see highway often (~10%).
My Kluger goes anywhere and it does 14.5-15L combine drive.
I only did 200km on my 135 and guess what... it has the best economy so far, <12L/100km. I don't baby cars :D:

Ya... I remember those 50c/L days
I think 14-16L/100km for the RX8 is pretty good considering all the funs the engine gives us, of couse less is always better.
BTW, Taka, seeing you as a senior member here, I have a question for you: when my 8's engine is all warm up, I can feel some "uneven" pulses through the seat when idle, I'm not sure whether you call this as rough idle or what, or could this cause by the pops from the exhaust? The Tacho needle seems unaffected when I feel the pulses. The pulses happens about every 2-4 seconds, and not continuously. Should I be worried?

I got asked this question all the time. This is normal... every car has it, something related to the rotary engine but I just cannot pinpoint what does that. I have been knowing that it is just normal rotary rumble :evil_laug

Revolver 05-10-2009, 06:38 PM Oh crap, not ANOTHER fuel economy thread?!!!
Shoot me now! :puke:
Yep, the RX8 has similar economy to a porky SUV. Most other performance cars with 6 cylinders or less have better economy (e.g. Bimmers, Porkas).
It will drink more fuel the harder you drive it.
It does what it says on the tin, which you should have read before you bought one.
Can we all get some sleep now?? :evil_laug

Seeing your total post count, no doubt you must have dead sick of this topic, but there are only so much we can talk about the 8, so all topics gotta be refreshed every now and then right :) just to keep the love going :D: Good night!

Suck fuel SUV are the LandRovers and LandCruser V8 that does 25L/100km.
Anyone owns a FPV 270 Territory?

25L... holy mother
I know the bog standard Territory sucks about 17L/100km in actual use.

Agreed the 2-3 tonne tanks are the worst but buying Klugers and CX7s for family purposes isn't exactly hug a tree, is it?
I've never bought into the whole SUV thing for family truckster duties. A stationwagon or decent sized sedan does the same job for less running costs and is usually more fun to drive. The taller cargo space in SUVs is generally not worthwhile unless you're transporting bulky loads often like bikes, etc. A wasteful image statement rather than fit for purpose.

Tim Tam 05-10-2009, 09:00 PM Our 4.0L V6 Pathfinder (200kw) drinks 16l/100k around town. My last fill on the RX was at 14L. There you go, just in case you were wondering.
Revolver 05-10-2009, 09:22 PM My Mazda 6 does about 8-10L... :evil_laug
Noddi_76 05-11-2009, 02:39 AM from a full tank to the empty line i get a fraction over 400km per tank, mostly suburban driving (4/5) with some city driving (1/5)
Cromax 05-11-2009, 03:39 AM I get between 12-14L/100km on my daily commute. That said I have a lovely tollway and barely any traffic to worry about anymore which is terrific!
Driving down Springvale Rd in heavy traffic, I'll get 14-14.5L/100km.
Contrary to Dave's comment on driving the car hard, I find that it doesn't matter how I drive it, the economy always stays about the same. The worst I've done is 350-370km on a tank ... and that was with my foot to the floor!
Revolver 05-11-2009, 03:50 AM I definitely go thru fuel faster when I drive it hard. Even more noticeable on track days, which admittedly isn't very relevant to real world consumption.
Tim Tam 05-11-2009, 06:02 PM Anyone ever worked out trackday fuel consumption? That would be interesting.
Revolver 05-11-2009, 06:05 PM Someone did it once. From memory it's in the high teens to low twenties...
DrGonzo 05-11-2009, 07:08 PM Depending on how I drive it I get around 13L/100km from the RX8. My previous car was a Ford BA XR6T which averaged 18L/100km and before that a E36 BMW 320i which averaged around the 14L/100km mark.
So the RX8 is the most frugal car I have owned in the past 8 or so years, and definitely the most fun, even though it's not the quickest.
On the topic of consumption, has anyone noticed that the last quarter of fuel seems to disappear a lot quicker than the first 3/4? Is this normal? I have noticed my wife's Honda Civic does the same.

Yeah, that's because the tank is narrower at the bottom, as compared to the top.
(I just totally made that up)

That can't be right, surely? I have to drive into Goulburn to fill up at lunchtime, and I can't be doing THAT many Ks on the track!

Check the new 911's economy stats. Now that's frugal!
Otherwise, buggered if I know. Perhaps the gauge accuracy differs depending on the amount of fuel in the tank. I've certainly noticed the same thing in most cars I've owned...

I'm going off memory but it wasn't as high as I thought it was. In the twenties I think. Why not test it out yourself this year and let us all know...
FWIW, I've done track days at WPR starting with a full tank which has lasted me the day and got me home again...
thisllub 05-11-2009, 08:38 PM 450km per tank no problems.
I have managed as low as 10 l/100 on the Pacific Highway.
Tyres are my problem.
I rotated them last weekend.
After 14000km I have 1.2 pubic hairs left on the rears before they are illegal.
I might get another 3000 out of them.
Considering I only ever break traction on rare unintended occasions in the wet I think it is pretty hard.
I would say that 50% of my driving is straight country roads.
The other 50% is well... not so straight.
Revolver 05-11-2009, 10:08 PM My Michelin PS2's have lasted over 35K, which includes half a dozen track days.

I have test drove a 911 from Melbourne to Daylesford and back. In 16 different drivers. The economy when we head back is around 11-12L/100km, but there are a lot of highway miles.
takahashi 05-12-2009, 01:53 AM My Michelin PS2's have lasted over 35K, which includes half a dozen track days.
Yeah PS2 are good. Just don't get B'stone RE050A runflats (like the one in my current daily drive). Some dude only get 9000km on road conditions.. no burn outs!
Cromax 05-12-2009, 02:00 AM Are you sure? Maybe he lapsed to look in his rear view mirror at the plumes of smoke behind him!

Taka, Howdy mate...!!!!
The RE050A's Normal (that's RE for Rotary Engine BTW!!?) on my RX-8 appear to be wearing very well at 8000 KMS, I find them a good combination of comfort and grip...what do you think..an improvement over the 040's????

And I can just imagine how gently those 16 different drivers babied it, NOT!!
For the performance available the economy is nigh on unbeatable.

Runflats still suck, I don't care what bimmer say about more recent generations, yada yada yada. Why didn't you ask for normal rubber when you ordered it?
Kusanagi 05-12-2009, 04:24 AM Speaking of tyres, Bridgestone Adrenaline is excellent!! My brother got this on his S2K, they are incredible. I'll get them as soon as my current crappy one wears out, I think they're some older Bridgestone model, but whatever they are it's noisy as hell.
K
azzaboynt 05-12-2009, 08:41 AM I've done 18500km on mine over the last 4.5 years.
Still get approx 300km out of 50 ltrs. All city driving Sydney hilly north shore 4km to work and back.
Yes, you read that right. Eighteen and a half thousand kilometers in four and a half years for my daily drive. All stock, no mods, original tyres.

The fuel consumption for my daily A-B is 14.3L/100km exactly! I just tested it again today, I had 185km on the trip meter since my last top up, so my calucation is 185x0.143=26.455L, so this is how much I need to top up again, and guess what? The bowser stopped at 26.30L!!! How consistent is that!
BTW, I do this calculation because I need to know how much premix to put in for every refuel, not that I'm counting beans :P:
I do redline about few times a week, and some 6-7k rpm everyday.
K
timbervolt 05-12-2009, 10:06 AM Hmmm, I must be babying my car.
I get 11-12L/100km on my daily commute (mostly 80kph freeway) and can be as good as 9.6 driving the Hume Hwy. I redline the car a couple of times a week to keep it clean.
I don't remember what it was when I tracked it, may be about 25L/100km?

Your 80kph freeway says a lot, my daily A-B one way 11.8km, only about 4km is 80kph zone, the rest is 60kph, beside I have about 5-6 minutes of idle wastage at least twice a day for the warm up.
But I really doubt I can achieve 9.6L on the highway.
K
DrGonzo 05-12-2009, 09:04 PM I have driven my car to Echuca and back on the Hume and I don't think I even got close to 9.6.
thisllub 05-12-2009, 09:44 PM What sort of tyres are they?
These are Dunlop Direzza.
The originals lasted 21k and I drove them another 2k before I changed them. (Dry weather and a long trip)
I think it is the type of gravel on the roads around here. I only get about 30k out of the tyres on the Holden.
It probably doesn't help that I have 2x25 km/h corners before I even leave my street. :)
If ever this car was designed for a place it is here in the hills.
Black-8 05-14-2009, 04:32 AM I see under 10L/100KM when I drove to Adelaide. But on daily commute, usually 15L/100KM cause no freeway at all, max speed is 70kph and that's if I'm lucky. The rest are really bumper to bumper traffic.
On track, if I remember correctly, mine drinks 20-25L/100KM
Revolver 05-14-2009, 10:00 PM I've done 18500km on mine over the last 4.5 years.

I think it was one of my longer drives :)
I know it's "that time of the month" when I stop at a petrol station.
Strange thing is, I do enjoy my fortnightly 4am drive to palm beach and back. Gotta say, zero problems with the car apart from a flat battery from not shutting the boot properly once. Hill start in reverse down my steep driveway and a short drive around sorted that problem quick smart.
The 8 sadly has to go next Feb. Got a few months to decide what I get next. My manly mojo says get the Nissan GTR, the pimple between my shoulders is telling me to go for something PC. My dad wants to sell me one of his Merc 170's built just after WWII (some assembly required).
So far, my mojo has always won ;)
Yeah I am thinking of trading mine in on a Veyron or a Lambo..
Which do you think is the better car..
The Veyron, Lamb Mur,...I just cant decide...

Go for it Azza. Get the GTR and drive it 500kms a year. That's how most Lambos and Fezzas spend their lives anyway. :uhh:
Wouldn't it be nice if the GTR caused the Euros (or more importantly the car buying public) to realise how much they overcharge for performance... :spank:

I think it is a cultural thing.

Most Euro marques let you drive their cars on tracks without voiding warranty.
Most Euros don't require gearbox rebuilds with every service (OK, so I am exaggerating, sort of).
Still, 911 Turbo performance for less than half the price.... it's a fair trade off :)
Ottog 05-27-2009, 08:36 AM Anyone ever worked out trackday fuel consumption? That would be interesting.
At full roar arouond Wakefield mine drinks 30l/100k. Possibly due to the cold air intake that I have.
Stay under 3750 rpm and I get 9.5-10.1 l/100k (cruising at about 105kph)
