View Full Version : Few mods going in, waiting for dyno readings.
tofu_box 05-06-2009, 10:21 PM Hey all
Went to Promaz today to get a few bits and pieces installed
Basically im getting
-racing beat, CAI + Duct. (Upgrade from K&N pod inside stock intake)
-Agency Power Under driven Crank Pulley
- Microtec LT-10 Piggyback ecu + dyno tuned.
I dunno what to expect from it all.
So therefore i asked to take a pre mod dyno and after mod dyno for a comparison.
Once i get it all done i'll post the dynos here so people can get a basic idea, about power increases.
also getting in it a basic service aswell.
P.S (dont laugh at my kw)
Ok its all done
I tried to keep conditions as much as possible during the dynos so i get a fair comparison.
Before:
Mods:
Promaz ignition
magnaflow exhaust system
K&N drop in inside OEM airbox
After;
Same Mods
+
RB Intake + Duct
Agency Power Pulley
Microtek Lt-10 dyno tuned
roughly about 14rwkw increase.
The Dyno should explain itself
(its a bit rough cous simon ran outta ink for printer, however i'll get a better one towards end of week)
Anyhow afterwords
I had Decarbon, Yellowtop Battery, Service done.
Original Battery had one failed cell inside (both dyno ran on original battery)
hope this gives everyone a idea.
there has being a drop in lower end power however mid-top i can really feel it. More response also from top end, normal revving feels smoother, slight drop in sound system volume at a full stop, not really noticeable. R
other then that, its hard to say i've been driving a v8 5litre around... so yea cant really give a proper opinion (feels like a power drop lol)

Also note, this only had the first run, there was a few more kws squeezed out after more tuning, but the blue line didnt show (ran outta ink) so i'll need to get it
so since my dyno before this date, was 90.4
can i assume i am now OVER 100 rwkw? lol
*quote*
with all these mods you should crack the 100rwkw mark for sure
for comparison.
His dyno gets stock autos at 60 kw, and mauel at around 93 kw
Tim Tam 05-06-2009, 10:46 PM This should be interesting!
Revolver 05-07-2009, 12:01 AM Excellent.
Many people have trod down the same path without doing this, so hopefully you'll be able to confirm or deny the oft stated 'seat of the pants dyno' impressions with some hard data.
Thanks for sharing...
Brettus 05-07-2009, 12:18 AM should be good for 15 whp mostly from the tune
pity you didn't search before getting the LT10 though .....
Revolver 05-07-2009, 03:13 AM You're forgetting the louder induction sound - known to have a significant effect on 'seat of pants dyno' - "it's louder! It must be faster..."
tofu_box 05-07-2009, 04:49 AM well i just couldnt find the lack of support for other ecu tuning devices down here in melb. There is Cobb which really does appeal to me the fact you have to drive base map and wait for someone to send the tunes over (this is my everyday car) therefore i have some chills at the idea. Another is the ProTuner, which i cant really find anyone here either to do the tuning.
Lt-10 was provided by Promaz, so full support, and i am considering going their turbo kit. which means with the LT-10 the turbo kit would cut out the cost of the ecu.
DrGonzo 05-07-2009, 08:30 AM Did you consider their Bosch coil kit? I had the upgrade done last week and the bum dyno reckons it's picked up a little more power but more importantly it feels smoother and revs more cleanly, especially in the mid range.
tofu_box 05-07-2009, 10:14 AM its already done. :)
and the hi-flow cat from there aswell.
Tim Tam 05-07-2009, 08:06 PM Wow, with all these mods you should crack the 100rwkw mark for sure..............(sorry, cheap shot at your auto).
I was wondering though, is it wise to up the power with the auto gearbox? Mazda reduced the power because the auto couldn't handle it, right? (what year model is your RX?)
tofu_box 05-08-2009, 04:27 AM cheap shot indeed.
Better then the US side of things, i prob would have being flamed and blown up for having an auto no matter my circumstances lol.
Its a 03 Auto, the gear box can easily hold the increase, (to be honest i dont expect alot) butter maybe not an turbo. From my knowledge the limiter was there to be *safe* and 9k revs is a big difference to 7.5k, and 9k being the limit, and sometimes the tran will lag for abit when tip-tronicing. My guess, was the 1.5k rev being the *safer* options then to push it to the limit.
Now that is my opinion in terms of reasons for lower rpms, of course it is partially informed from reading on forums, most likely there are a 100 other reasons and i need to go find a flame suit.
Anyways the gear box holding up, was from my mechanics, although the did suggest a gearbox strengthen for a turbo.
Anyhow, pre these mod i got a 90.4 rwkw from a dyno, however keep in mind my car was not prepared for it. (friend dragged me along last minute)
So oil was fairly black *7k kms driving* oil filter prob needed change, K&N airfilter has not being cleaned for about 40k kms.. (lazy i am)
And some sought of exhaust issue, (issue being left seems to run more rich then right?) wtf? getting that checked out atm.
Oh yea and a ton of clothes in boot, (last minute cleaning) lol.
So it was not really a day to see peak performance of car.
I dynoed it to about 7k.
Every ran it showed a drop around 5.5-6ish range, of about 4-5rwkw? then started to climb again.
Cant exactly remeber as Promaz has that dyno sheet. So getting that issue checked out.
Dunno if it was normal or not? maybe someone has some insight.
But yes, the before and after, would be from the same dyno, but different times. So hopefully i can provide some guidelines for true power increases in some hard facts.
However there could be a few assumptions made aswell, such as butt dyno, for things like response, which i will post up later.
Anyways tuesday it should be ready.
Revolver 05-10-2009, 06:51 PM Look fwd to seeing the results...maybe put all the clothes back in! ;-)
tofu_box 05-13-2009, 06:00 AM Bump for update!
rotarenvy 05-13-2009, 07:04 AM His dyno gets stock autos at 60 kw, and mauel at around 93 kw
dam it's a low reading dyno. but the difference is what matters and how it feels.
and auto isn't a great starting point. you should think about forced induction.
tofu_box 05-13-2009, 11:01 AM well it feels great, limited driving as im sick. but i def feel the power + in high ranges, 4.5k rev+ lower i feel the drop.
FI ey, who drives a rx8 and dont want one of those :P
Tim Tam 05-13-2009, 06:43 PM Tofu,
You can't claim more than 100kw until you have written proof!
tofu_box 05-13-2009, 09:58 PM damn i still failed :(
auzoom 05-14-2009, 01:54 AM Jas' There is a mob in Preston that we all use as reference and in comparison Simons reads roughly 8 - 12 Kw lower. DAMN close mate.
I am hoping that with the new premises, Simon will get an RPM input for his Dyno :)
tofu_box 05-14-2009, 03:16 AM arggggg...... so close....... mmmmm.... octane booster, sound system out, take out rear seat, errrr........ borrow friend's light rims..
am i over 100 rwkw yet?
auzoom 05-14-2009, 06:56 AM sorry dude, weight doesnt help on the dyno. The rims might ;)
tofu_box 05-14-2009, 06:58 AM lend me yours andrew
auzoom 05-14-2009, 07:21 AM I could, but they have semi's on them and that would send you the wrong way.
tofu_box 05-14-2009, 07:51 AM not after im done with em ;)
speaking of which andrew, your car all sweet now?
auzoom 05-14-2009, 03:39 PM lol. Spare Engine is being machined, lightened, balanced and ported. Waiting on the ransom note from Mazda for the seal kit and the ceramic apex seals. Car is still going for the time being though :)
tofu_box 05-14-2009, 06:03 PM lol @ ransom note.
Sounds good, you aiming at pushing up your psi aswell?
Revolver 05-14-2009, 09:55 PM lol. Spare Engine is being machined, lightened, balanced and ported. Waiting on the ransom note from Mazda for the seal kit and the ceramic apex seals. Car is still going for the time being though :)
:) Spare huh? Got every confidence in your turbo conversion then? ;)
Or are you just looking to maximise the power available?
auzoom 05-15-2009, 03:08 AM I had a problem with compression BEFORE the turbo went in. We surmised from a number of tests that the problem was the cracked house around the spark plugs issue.
At that point I started looking around for another engine which I could build up slowly (mostly to do with cash flow) so I didnt have to be without my car while I a) saved up the money or b) the engine was being rebuilt. All is going well 10,000km after the turbo went in.
I purchased AccessPort end of last year and ended up waiting 4 months for a combination of the device, the device recognising my car and my "calibration" tune and even then I was advised I would never be able to tune the car myself and would have a choice of one Cobb dealer in Victoria to dyno tune my car. Needless to say, in this time I got a little #$%^&ed off and Hymee stepped up and made me an offer I couldn't refused. I have since moved from the LT10S to a flash tune, but in my impatience leaned out under load and broke a dowel pin. Pure dumb stupid user error.
ALl this has done is forced me to hurry my rebuild up by 6 months. I can still drive the car, just have to stay out of boost as much as possible and watch oil level and pressure.
As for boost levels, I am aiming to daily on 11PSI and be able to get up to 1 bar. I will get dyno figures on both. Will be happy with around 250rwkw @ 1 Bar not sure yet on Nm but expecting big improvements from lightened rotating assembly and flywheel.
Cheers
Andrew
tofu_box 05-15-2009, 05:17 AM Andrew has many spares, even a spare auto tranny, just incase he gets lazy in the future............... or he was very kind to me, and wanna surprise me when i turn 21
auzoom 05-15-2009, 07:04 PM You will be thanking me when you need a new tranny and only need to pay $400!
tofu_box 05-15-2009, 11:35 PM was that a quote? lol
Revolver 05-16-2009, 12:37 AM You've got it bad Andrew, lol.
I can see it now. You win Lotto, have a Gallardo LP-560 delivered and then start stroking your chin thinking..."hmmm, wonder what I can do with it...."
Tim Tam 05-18-2009, 07:55 PM I can see it now. You win Lotto, have a Gallardo LP-560 delivered and then start stroking your chin thinking..."hmmm, wonder what I can do with it...."
If I had a Gallardo delivered I'd be too busy stroking something else..............
Revolver 05-18-2009, 09:46 PM Your knob?
Gear knob that is...oh that's right - it's got a flappy paddle gearbox...your flaps then...ok, I'm stopping now...
