Mid-pipe concerns I have the exotic speed high flow cat (200 cells) and the Greddy SE exhaust. It shoots flames (don’t want flames) and some of them have my concerns. They have been a few times when going through some twisties. Shifting from a high RMP then getting off the gas real fast you can hear the bang and sometimes I can feel it in my chest. I don’t like that at all. As soon as the engine is at temp this things “POPS” all the time. The popping I don’t mind it’s the 3ft flames out the back I don’t want.

The owners with the mid-pip upgrade, is this normal? I know the rotary is known for flames with upgraded exhaust. Buy dam I didn’t think I was going to have an explosion under my ass.

I have the K&N drop in.

Yes the CEL is on. I can clear the CEL with a scanner but the light comes back on after/during hard runs

Yes it’s running rich, you can smell the gas and see the flames

Many people don't realize there is a distinct difference between a flame (that you cannot feel, you just see it out the exhaust), and an explosion when fuel ignites and literally explodes. It feels like your tires burst, or a small bomb going off.

I never had it till I was catless and turbocharged. Turning the fuel can eliminate it.

I think tuning the mixture is in order to reduce the flames is a must. I see an flash tuner in your future.

That's it!!!!

I changed my plugs about 500-700 miles ago. Should I double check the gap, or open the gap for a better spark?

Thought of something else, then I do the ECU reset (brake/trip). The car runs good really good. It barely even pop's. Then around 150/200 miles it’s starts acting up. With the CEL being on I know its dumping more fuel to “save” the engine.

I used to get flames while driving, while shifting, etc. But the big explosions usually came after I got off the interstate, stood for 2 mins at a traffic light, then started driving. BOOM! as I shift into 2nd or 3rd and turned the corner. The first time it happened I was freaked out. I pulled over and checked for a flat. WTF was that!?

I even made a dumbass thread about it, and people said it might be because I was catless. I was skeptical.

Eventually I got used to it. It REALLY freaks people out who are driving cars around you. They quit driving next to me and hang back. When I got rid of the int-x and went with the accessport, the explosions stopped. AP is much more granular and meters the fuel better.

I guess my concern is being N/A and this "explosion" is going to blow me up : ). Besides wasting fuel and having the CEL light on. Nothing is really wrong.... I mean this unburned fuel is not going to ignite before the CAT and blow back in the engine and destroy the engine.

Going to double check the plugs i just replaced to see what specs they are at.

But wouldn't it shorten the life of the CAT or is there no difference at all?

i used to have flames, the explosion kind, when i shifted while driving hard.

currently, im running the cobb stage 1 (never sent my maps to mm, im lazy.... -_-) and i dont get the explosions anymore. leaned out my fuel a lot, i think my AFRs seem to be pretty good, 14 to 12 under load. the power increase is noticeable, the power is delivered a lot sooner than stock too.

it impressed the shit out of the girls, but i'd rather not have explosions near the back of my car.
