It originally meant the Caucasoid people living in the Caucasus, basically Europeans, Arabs and Western Asians. The Caucasus was a region consisting of modern-day Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia etc. Today, "white" people are made up of so many different geographic and ethnic backgrounds, the term Caucasian doesn't apply to all of them.
