I'm about two hours south of it. It was a rolling earthquake. People I spoke to in Los Angeles did not feel it though. A friend of mine has a girlfriend that lives up in Atasscadero, which is right by San Simion. A building collapsed out there from the quake, killing two. mikeb 12-24-2003, 03:12 PM I work in huntington beach and we felt it big time at my work Kaliken 12-24-2003, 04:24 PM in redondo beach and it was just a mild roll. I am still kinda sick and I thought it was just my cold. :) I hope everyone is okay though. Elara 12-24-2003, 06:33 PM Darn it- now my earthquake seems kinda piddly. Your aftershocks were bigger than our entire quake! 8_wannabe 12-25-2003, 10:24 PM Originally posted by Elara Darn it- now my earthquake seems kinda piddly. Your aftershocks were bigger than our entire quake! In CA, anything less than a 5.0 isn't even worth discussing around the water cooler. We are amused when out-of-state quakes like 3.2 make big news elsewhere. Of course, in San Diego a half inch of rain is big news. It's all relative. QuantumTheory08 12-27-2003, 06:35 PM ....yeah I felt it. Not the 1st for me though. I lived in the San Fernando Valley back in 1971, that was much longer and more intense than this one. My sister-law has property up off of hwy 46; she was on a mountain ridge ~10 miles from the epicenter. She says she saw 5 and 6 foot boulders rolling down the mountain. I was at my dental office seeing patients. It was more up and down in my opinion (I'm on the second floor). The very last part of the quake had a bit of side to side shift; that the type of movement I worry about most. We ecacuated the office for about 5 minutes. I then got on my ham radio (just 2m FM and 440MHz) to see what I could hear. The office power in San Luis Obispo went off for a second, and then back on. The cell phones were out. I turn on the radio and I hear my brother and sister-in-law talking to each other. He was in Atascadero where I live (power was out - he was using a handheld radio). Joy described what she had seen; she was very calm. To get out down her road, she had to move about 40 to 50 big rocks. I asked if anyone knew where the epicenter was and a gentleman came on with the usgs.gov site showing 7 miles NE of San Simeon. Ham radio again answers the question of the day when nothing else works. My landlord dosen't like the 12 foot white pole that is on the fasad (sp?) roof. After the earthquake, I'm requesting leaving it up. You never know - it could save a life if all other communication is out. It's amazing what a little radio can do. Nothing was damaged at my home or at the office. Today at church, several people told some very humbling experiences as to, by chance, they did not go to the bakery or the gift stores in Paso Robles, where two people were killed when the second floor of an old brick structure fell sideways and crushed them as they fled the building....very sad. Life is a very fragile thing and it is important to remember Who we are dependent on and grateful for every day we get. My family is fine (~25 of us who live in the area) I am grateful to God that none of us were hurt nor anything damagaed. oh yeah, we've had quite a few aftershocks - you get woken up in the night. ....a little scary. check out the www.usgs.gov site - it even shows how to get "topo" maps of the epicenters. -jcs- |
