View Full Version : It's the 8 for me
i3man 12-22-2003, 08:14 PM After about of a month of new car shopping I finally decided on the 8. The funny thing is that the 8 wasn't even in the running for the first 3 weeks.
I was initially set on the G35 sedan w/ AT. The only thing that prevented me from buying the G35 right off the bat was the ackward power seat controls embedded into the right side seat bolster. Some owners were experience leg pain as a result of pressure on a nerve in the right leg from the seat control bracket.
As someone that has back problems already, I have shooting pain down my right leg from that nerve periodically so I didn't want a car that made my problem chronic. Despite this I was still very close to getting the G35.
Then I stumbled on to the new Acura TL and was very impressed with the interior. The exterior stying didn't quite win me over though because it looked too common. From some angles the TL looks like a BMW, Camry, Mustang, Stratus, it just looks very common.
Then it was the BMW 330i but it was about $10K more than I wanted to spend. Besides there are so many 3-series BMWs on the road and you cannot tell the difference between a $20K 318i and a $40K 330i unless you see the badge on the back.
So it was back to the G35 but then I noticed some discussions about the RX-8 on Edmunds and had to check it out. I went to the dealer after it closed at 11PM to see the 8 and knew right then and there that I had to take a closer look at it.
I was an owner of the first 13B made in the 84 GSL-SE. It was the best car I ever had and I sold it before I should have. That was the last MT car I had and have not set foot in another MT car since '88.
Well I got the 8. I didn't even test drive it but after taking a test ride in it and sitting in it in the show room, I knew it was the car for me. It brought back so many fond memories of my RX-7. When I drove the car home from the dealer, that was the first time in 15 years that I had driven a MT car since I did not test drive the 8 at all...I only had a test ride. To say the least I was a bit nervous and didn't want to kill the motor leaving the lot. I think the saleman was just as nervous as I was when he watched me leave.
But all it well, didn't kill the motor then and haven't killed it in the 5 days I've had it...fits like an old shoe...ahh it's good to be home again after 15 years :D

i3man 12-23-2003, 01:12 AM Thanks everyone.
This forum taught me a lot about the 8 before I got it and was instrumental in helping me decide that this was the car for me.

Nice story. Now you give me memories.
I feel nostalgic, too. My dad bought a 1981 Datsun 280ZX over the RX7. I got to drive it occasionally as a senior in high school and in college as well. He sold it over 10 years ago, and I've missed it, as I'm sure he has also.
I looked at both the 350Z and RX8 before I bought the 8. And the funny thing is the RX8 reminds me of the 280ZX a lot more than the 350Z does.
Speed-ER doc 12-23-2003, 06:33 AM I agree, It really DOES feel like putting on an old pair of shoes when you get back in a rotary. Well put. Enjoy your new toy!

ummm... i don't think I would want to be putting my feet in some of my old shoes... but hey its a good analogy! :D :D :D
cruzdreamer 12-23-2003, 12:06 PM Great choice.....enjoy the ride and attention!
photogjunkie 12-23-2003, 02:13 PM I'm new to the forum. I have two Miatas and am considering getting rid of one of them and getting an RX-8. I would want the base ($27,200) 6-speed with nothing extra. Are there any special incentives at this time? What would be a good out-the-door price?
Congrats! I was in the same situation, deciding between the G and the RX8, I figured if you want to go sport, it's good to go all the way and I chose the 8 as well. did you notice a difference between the Infiniti dealers and Mazda's, anyway I liked the G but I got a bad impression of all the dealers!
i3man 12-24-2003, 04:27 PM Actually the G dealer was the most laid back and it seemed they would have given me a very good deal. In fact that is the only dealer I have ever seen around here that didn't have a dealer markup on their vehicles.
I'm not sure if Infinitis aren't selling but every dealer in this state normally tacks on a $3K - $5K dealer markup right off the bat and you have to pull teeth with them to get it taken off. The Infiniti dealer told me right off the bat that they would let the car go for under MSRP plus fees.
I like the G sedan better than the coupe but I would have gotten a AT on the sedan. Once I saw the 8 I totally forgot about the G and it was love at first sight. With the 8 it was with MT or nothing, it'd be a waste to get an 8 with AT, so I'm back to driving MT again after 15 years of AT cars.
scarrab 12-29-2003, 02:25 PM I am actually getting rid of my G35 sedan (AT), and will be replacing it with the Rx-8! At the time I bought the G, the Rx-8 was only pre-order. I drooled over it, but wanted a car THEN. I love the power of the G, and the looks, but I'm growing bored with it. I want more sport, and am not too concerned with lack of Torque on the Rx-8. I have yet to drive it, but I think it will be the car for me.
Another factor for switching, is that Dealers are now making deals on the 8. I've got 2 dealers right now that will sell for invoice, or lower!!
I'll loose a little money on the G, but will make up for it on the 8. Plus, I'll be smiling from ear to ear :D
i3man 12-29-2003, 10:20 PM If you're only interested in the first 100 feet from a dead stop, don't get it cause you'll be complaining. If you enjoy the DRIVING experience then you will not be disappointed.
takahashi 12-29-2003, 11:32 PM nice story....
One question: is there dealers open to 11pm?
Icemastr 12-30-2003, 12:13 AM One time me, my sales manager, and the finance manager stayed at the dealership until 10:50pm or so, normal closing hours 8:30, because they couldnt decide what color for they car they wanted. But of all the dealerships I have worked at none have closed later than 9:00 (or until the last customer buying a car is gone).
i3man 12-30-2003, 12:47 AM No car dealer will ever tell a customer come back in the morning if the customer is ready to buy the car that night.
RX-jimenez 12-30-2003, 01:06 AM I test drove the 8 today for the first time, and is incredible, i had a Datsum 210 hatchback in Puerto Rico with a 12a and nos, 1/4 mile in 11.9 and that was 10 years ago., I was a little upset with the power of the car, but damn is a beautifull car and fun to drive, and of course it was just 5 minutes with salesman with me and the tank empty, i am telling you with the gas engine on all the time so i had to go back fast.,he would'nt let me put gas on it...so he didn't got the deal., but i will buy soon...in 2 weeks..trying to get the best deal....sorry with my english guys....you know puertoricans......like me...
