Yep, that's me. Where'd you pick yours up from, Dragon?

If you're new to this forum, let me assure you ANYTHING you'd like to know or buy for your RX8 is discussed here. This has proven to be my best resource for information, since we really have only a couple good rotary techs in the state.

I picked mine up at Bountiful Mazda. its like 5 min. from my house. what about you. Well i am wanting to get an exhaust and intake for my 8 but fear voiding my warranty. what modes do you have if any?

Landon_Starr
12-23-2003, 03:05 PM
I bought mine from Murray. They don't care about intakes or exhaust for the warranty. I'm pretty good buddies with the service manager there, I'm sure I could introduce you. He even told me if I turbo/super charged it he wouldn't ask questions. I guess I just hope he doesn't quit anytime soon. :)

Aftermarket parts--

20" wheels, aftermarket leather, upgraded sunroof, clear corners, deciding between K&N & RE intake, ordering GREDDY exhaust in January. I plan on jumping on the canzoomer bandwagon with his piggyback system as soon as it's available. Custom stereo system being installed in January, plexiglass over the recessed spare-tire bay in the trunk with 2 amps & custom box integrated with all new carpeted interior(design specs already completed). Wish list(purchases within the next year, hopefully) includes the rear fog light, strakes, shaving emblems, DVD (probably aftermarket & going w/ the JDM tray).

I have a bit of an aftermarket sickness, if you haven't come to that conclusion yet. :)

i would say so. you have credit cards dont ya. j/k I think when i purchased my 8 they actually had to go get it from murray. right now im running all stock. Thats totatly cool that they wont ask questions. are you located in murray or else where? thanks for all the info to. Have you asked your dealer about getting the ECU reflashed like some people on here have been talking?

Landon_Starr
12-26-2003, 06:31 PM
No, I get nervous having the techs in Murray change my oil, let alone reflash my chip. I don't have any respect for the Mazda techs out here. No experience.

Cant say that i blame ya on that. I can understand how it would be difficult to find someone with alot of experiance. I my self am new to the rotary world. got stuck for the first time yesterday, this weather sucks real bad.

Dragon-
Have you seen this thread?
http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16559
This is what happened to me when I got my 8 stuck on ice.
Also, you might want to bookmark this site:
http://www.finishlineperformance.com/rx8/docs/index.html
I copied all the TSB's before having my ECU flashed, and was all too ready and willing to break out my laptop and show the service manager. I didn't need to, though... especially when I mentioned that I had read the TSB's before I got there. The service manager did kind of look at me funny... The dealerships, service managers and techs are going to have to get used to the fact that more and more people are "doing thier homework" before showing up. :D
Here's to hoping for the snow and ice to melt off of the roads!

Doc-
Did i read on another tread correctly that you are inline for CZ stage 1 mod? whats your thoughts on it? Thanks in advance

doccable
12-31-2003, 12:05 PM
Hi,
Yea, I'm going to buy the stage 1 kit, especially now since CZ has modified it to the point that it will fit entirely inside the ECU. This is one of the mods I have definitely decided to do, along with a RE intake, a cat-back, and the grounding kit, (this one is already done). My thoughts are, (after talking to CZ), that it can't hurt to add a few extra ponies. Plain and simple. When I get it installed, I'll let you know how it turns out.
I can say that the grounding kit was a decent mod, it's in this thread: http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16989
Hope this helps!

That brings up a good question, Doc-

I've been trying to decide on which intake to go with. The RE looks nice with the heat shield & such, what made you decide on that intake versus the typhoon?

--Landon

Omicron

Lemme jump in here, as I already have the Rotary Extreme intake.

I went with that one first and foremost because I think the heat shielding is important. Without it, the engine will be sucking hot air in all day long, since the K&N filter element is so large that it even blocks the cold air inlet duct. Secondly, I got to know Chuck from RE pretty well before I bought, and not only felt he was as ethical as they come, but also enough so that if I didn't like the intake, I knew he would take it back. No guarantees with the K&N... it depends on the vendor that sold it to you, and most won't take back a "used" intake once it's been on the car.

Additionally, the RE makes for a cleaner install... it even has provisions for the stock engine cover. If you go with the K&N, you have to lose the engine cover as there will be no mounts for it in front any more.
EDIT: Sorry, my mistake. The K&N does come with a bracket so you can retain the stock engine cover.

Finally, I consider the RE intake and the K&N to be about equal value, even tho the RE is about $70 more. There is more than $70 worth of heat shielding that comes with it.

So how do I like it? In a word, it's awesome. I can feel the difference, which means it's increasing HP by around 10 HP or so. Conventional wisdom (and other member's experiences) tell that your "butt dyno" can detect increases of 10HP or more. Mine does. It also sounds EXCELLENT at wide open throttle, makes the car sound like a JET engine, rather than "just" a turbine like it does stock. You can really hear the rotary doing it's thing with this intake.

Hope this helps!

Well, that's it for me. I know which one I'm getting... :D Actually, I had already decided. I have also decided on Borla for exhaust, along with the stage 1 kit. CZ and I talked at great length about the stage 2... I wasn't certain until I talked it over with him. I'm only going with the stage 1. Stage 2 looks enticing enough, and even though I live in a state where the chances of getting caught are pretty much nil... I'm not takin' no chances!

Secondly, why Borla?

--Landon Waaaal, I bought the Borla because it was the first thing on the market, at the right price, Borla is a great brand name, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, I LOVED the way it sounded. Deep and powerful, mature, and not at all ricey.

I have never looked back since I got it, and am VERY happy with it. This is unusual in my experience, as when you're an early adopter of a product, sure as hell right after you buy it something comes out that is better and cheaper. This is hapilly not the case with the Borla, and it's still one of the most compelling choices on the market.

However, if I were in the market today, besides the Borla, I'd also take a good hard look at the Rotary Extreme, and maybe even the Greddy. The RE seems to be the best design from a flow standpoint, and I know Chuck (RE's owner) personally, and can tell you that if you weren't happy with the exhaust for any reason, he'd take it back without questions. Not many other vendors would take a "used" exhaust back, which it becomes once it goes on your car.

I also like the Greddy's looks and sound, and it's a great brand name too. And I really like the huge 'ol tips too. :D But really, besides those tips, it's no more compelling than the Borla.

So that's it... hope this helps.

This was before Canzoomer started carrying them, and vendors overall were limited. Today I'd buy on price alone, as all the units on the market are identical. I think the cheapest I've seen them is on eBay... do a search on RX8 or RX-8 and you'll see 'em eventually.

The Brushed are not shiney, while the polished are. Your call as to which looks best. I personally don't have them yet, as I'm waiting for a cheaper pair to come out... $150-$200 is just too durn much for 4 little pieces of aluminum, IMHO! ;) Altho, I DO keep thinking about them... :D

About 4 sets of fender strakes were sold by a Mada dealership at 149.99, I called him to see if he'd still sell them at that price. Turns out, he only had 4 sets and he acquired them in a way that MAZDA wasn't selling them, HE was, and he was just looking for a quick few bucks. Not likely we'll see prices around there again.

Regarding the clear corners, EBAY is a little more pricey than JTimports(www.jtimports.com). JT offers them at around $50 with free shipping. I haven't seen any prices like that on ebay...

Trussville Mazda's site is always a good solid low-priced option on parts, they offer the strakes at 195.....which I'm sure is matched all over the place.

I'm in the EXACT same boat. =) It's kinda difficult to justify $200 for 4 pieces of small polished aluminum. <shrug>

I keep crossing my fingers for someone to manufacture a knock-off. I may end up breaking down, though, I put chrome wheels on my car and they would match just TOO well......(trying.......to.......maintain......com posure........hold off.......) :)

Yeah, hopefully. I have an enticing offer to go up to Vegas this weekend, though, so I may decide against it. I DO take the auto expo seriously, though, so I may wait until a little later on Saturday to go to Vegas so I can go check it out......

Hey, Landon!

I love mine! I traded in the 350Z for the RX-8; I haven't regretted it for a moment!

I got the Sports package Sunlight Silver...

I had read somewhere in this post that you had custom leather seats made... Any chance you'd care to divulge who did them for you? :D

And thanks for the link to the RX-8 club... That's my next stop from here...

Landon_Starr

I had my buddies at ATD (auto trim design) put the leather in. Although, it wouldn't be "custom" from an upholstery specialist's perspective, I believe it was a kit they obtained somewhere.

The thought of silver on black leather is intriguing to even a velocity red 8 owner, though....:)

...Mazda sponsoring the expo would be enough to spark interest of a possible mazdaspeed showing up, though. :)

I'm definitely going. :)

The auto show... That's exactly where you'll find me this weekend. :D

I did hear on the radio commercial the RX-8 being mentioned as a "car that drives you." I checked out Motor Trend's website about the auto show... Here's the link:

http://www.motortrendautoshows.com/saltlake/features.html

They list the RX-8 as a car listed to appear, yet could change at any moment... :shrugs:

Bountiful Mazda rocks!

I had got the Sports package in hopes of the official MazdaSpeed body kit becoming available here soon...

I just got a call and a fax from Bountiful Mazda, Scottie... He wanted to fax me over the pricing list for all of the MazdaSpeed parts he just barely got this morning. They are taking orders now, but won't be able to fulfill them until early spring...

The prices are -- well, pricy... But, they are willing to give a 10% discount to the first RX-8 to undergo the transformation, if they can take pictures for promotional purposes... Ten percent off of $5,000 isn't much...

Woh, Jiven (and anyone considering the Mazdaspeed kit as I am) you should check out our vendor's forum (http://www.rx8club.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=60). Both Trussville (http://www.trussvillemazda.com/partsstore/index.cfm) and Rosenthal (http://www.finishlineperformance.com/rx8/index.html) Mazda sell Mazdaspeed parts, and you can get the complete Mazdaspeed body kit, painted to match all the factory colors, less mirrors, for between $3396 and $3618, depending on the rear under spoiler you choose. For instance, from Trussville's website:

Mazdaspeed Front Bumper - Painted $1,290
Mazdaspeed Rear Under Spoiler Painted $732 (or) Mazdaspeed Rear Under Spoiler Primer + Gun Metallic $510
Mazdaspeed Rear Wing Spoiler $876
Mazdaspeed Side Skirts $720

And that's just Trussville, Rosenthal might be cheaper.

Got an even smaller budget? Go to Rotary Extreme (http://www.rotaryextreme.com/msstyle.html) and buy the "Mazdaspeed-style" kit for $2700, including a carbon fiber adjustable rear wing. Kit is an exact copy of the MS only it's made out of fiberglass, and excellent quality.

Landon_Starr
01-15-2004, 01:59 AM
Yeah.....Like Omicron said, definitely check out the vendors site prior to accepting any offers from the dealers. I had contacted Bountiful and Murray here in Utah to see if they'd match Trussville Mazda's price on the original body kit (not mazdaspeed), and they flat out said "no".

Although I get along with a lot of the people at the dealerships, they really are just salesmen. Mark-up is INSANE. Trussville is the only way to go for genuine mazda stuff (Rosenthal may compete, as Omicron stated, but I haven't looked into it).

Another good place to check if you want parts from Japan is CANZOOMER's place, he seems to have the largest selection of parts from Japan. Mazdaspeed stuff from Canz is more expensive than the dealers here, though, but Canz will have the part if the dealers don't.

May definitely want to check out his stage 1/2 chips if you're looking for more ponies.

Modern Garage is still around (Murray area). They have done a lot of work with rotaries and are one of the better shops in the valley (one of the few with a dynojet, too). They haven't dove into any R&D to create any of their own products to my knowledge, though.

bummin' a ride to work?!? I think drivin' the 8 in snow is comparably fun in the snow as it is on the pavement. :) I think I've heard it reference as a "fun spinning top" in other threads. :D

I really don't have many mods. It's really kinda pathetic. Sh@t will hit the fan as soon as I get my bonus & tax return, though. :D

Hey, Dragon! I had the same problem! I guess I was fooled by the 50/50 weight displacement as being an advantage in the snow. ;) And I won't mention the 4 lane fishtailing at the I-15/I-215 junction! :shakes head:

Here's a picture of the blue RX-8 at the Utah Auto Show. Yeah, no MazdaSpeed...

The RX-8 was the first car I went to. I talked with Gus, the guy who sold me my car, for a bit. I was amazed to listen to the comments that people were making. I just wanted to say "Don't be hatin'!" They ranged from "The RX-8 is a piece," to "It has no balls," to "Too bad it's just cute." I had called a couple people on their comments. They quickly shut up when I asked them if they've ever drove the RX-8. ;)

"It's an RX-8 thing. You wouldn't understand." LOL

im kind of surpirsed that you heard so many negative comments at the auto show. It looked like most people around it liked it. but then again i didnt hang around to long i was interested in seeing what all the hype was about the compition. 350 i wasnt impressed the interior really does feel cheap. the Evo and WRX just looked plain. the s2k was pretty nice though. also liked the paint on the cobra

JivenMushu
01-23-2004, 12:42 PM
I traded in my 350Z for the RX-8... I had the Z for 11 months. At first, I really enjoyed the car, but after a while, I could see the obvious flaws in it's design/materials.

The heat from the summer sun started curling out the plastic peice underneath the passenger side's dashboard. I had the Lemans Sunset orange; my front bumper looked like a connect the dots book. The smallest pebble or road debris would chip the bumper. The sewing on the driver's seat started unraveling... I had the car for 11 months! There's no reason why it should be doing that already...

Believe me, there is no competition between the RX-8 and the 350Z...

im from utah. i ended up buying from freeway in ogden (even though i live in west jordan) as they gave me no hassle and the best deal.

unfortunately my car is in the shop at bountiful mazda. last weekend i went to vegas and when i came back on sunday night it was snowing. i hit some ice getting off the bangerter i15 exit doing about 15 mph and slid right into the island. im sure any sailor within earshot of my car during the slide would have been a nice shade of red. i ended up cracking both the drivers side wheels and bending one wheel hub. im just really glad i didnt mess up the suspension.

I got my tinting done at Utah Window Tinting (I go nowhere else ). They do an awesome job. As long as you pay cash, no questions about tint %. =) Ooops, did I say that out loud?

Mine are 20% all around. I paid $150, but I've done all my cars (6 or so..?) there, and I've gotten to know the owners pretty well, they might give me a discount. If they do, tell them you know the guy with the red 8, and tell them I said they'd give you the same deal. :D They're pretty easy to work with.

Jiven, Dragon? Interested? If nothing else, we could coordinate the trip up to CO, and get a Utah RX-8 caravan rolling East. :)

Since the weather seems to be quite the drag when owning a RWD vehicle, how about something like the weekend of March 27th, 28th?

I'll be able to provide some information on some of the local performance shops, etc. I'm currently working with a local performance shop to have my car entered in the Autorama, March 18th - 21st, so I'll be able to provide you guys some info. from there.

Let me know if you're interested--

P.S. I installed my strakes on Monday, and the directions that came with them were wrong. Make sure you read the DIY strake install thread prior to installing, saves quite the headache. :D

i just called them before i noticed your edit and they quoted me $129. an added bonus for me is they are about 3 minutes from my house. the guy on the phone seemed pretty nice and i think im going to end up getting it done there. thanks for the tip.

as a side note, bountiful mazda gave me their dealer mazdaspeed brochure. ill try to have scans up later. but for now i can give you the prices they quoted me.

front tower brace- 345
rear tower brace - 235
mag wheels - 7000
ms-01 aluminum wheels - 2675
front roll bar - 418
rear roll bar - 388
shocks/springs combo - 1204
brake pad set - 308
front bumper w/ fog light- 1715
front bumper w/o foglight - 1600
side skirts - 945
rear bumper - 945
spoiler - 1110
flywheel - 900
muffler - 788
cf inner handle bezel - 147
cf door switch panel - 127
cf console kit - 522
shift knob - 118

all items plus tax.

personally i think these prices range from slightly more than average to ridiculously high. the funny thing is the service guy told me that i should wait and soon people would be making fiberglass copies of the body kit for less money.

Trussville is still consistently cheaper than your dealer quotes. Check em out if you get a minute.

There are already fiberglass copies, but who really wants fiberglass if there's an ABS plastic/polyurethane option? I destroyed 2 fiberglass bumpers on my accord coupe a couple of years ago, I'm not interested in going down that avenue again. :)

It seems that Bountiful is charging more than what Trussville claims is RETAIL. I think I got even more expensive quotes from Murray. <shrug> The internet & globalization is a wonderful thing. :D

Hey, a maybe's better than nothin'. :) I'll hit ya up a little closer to the date, if you end up coming, we should cruise up together, only thing better than a road trip in an 8 is a road trip with 2(possibly more..?). Also, Dragon, if you're interested in parts, etc., let me know. I'm currently working with a Utah based performance shop on getting some dyno figures on a combination of different mods (exhaust, etc.). It will be nice to see how the mods perform at our altitude.

Anyone else in the Utah area interested in the Rocky Mountain club meet in June? Let me know, we can try to organize a group drive up there. PM me or post here.

I'm trying to talk the performance shop into purchasing CZ mods (10+ for the discount). They seem to take an R&D approach to modifications, and take pride in their own tuning (they may lead more towards an PEMS-type solution) but I'm trying to convince them into saving some R&D expense & using existing research/maps, plus that will open time up to do R&D on other things. :D

I want to purchase the CZstage 2, got an e-mail from Maurice saying they're looking to start producing the end of this month.

Nice thing is, we can get the 10+ discount even if we order 5 stage 2's & 5 stage 1's. I'll be running some dyno times stock, with the K&N filter replacement, & the GREDDY SP2 within the next month.

Keep me posted Dragon, when you want to order Stage 1. Let me know if you're interested, too, Jiven...

so i think i have the worst luck in the universe.

saturday morning i wake up, weather looks ok. a tiny bit overcast but thats ok. i decide to take my car to work instead of the train. i get off work at 5. at 3 it starts to snow. you can imagine my snow paranoia from the accident i just had a week and a half ago. i get out of work, and the snow is coming down but the roads seem ok. no snow just really wet, not even slush. not wanting to try my luck with the freeway again i just decide to take state st all the way home. im being very careful, keeping about 8-10 car lengths away, only doing about 20 mph. around 50th s the streets start to get slushy and i start to get nervous. making the final approach to my neighborhood its getting kind of bad. im doing about 8-10 mph when the light turns yellow right at the moment. you know the one where youre going to fast to stop but too slow to make it through before it turns red. i lightly apply the brakes and lose all traction, slide through the intersection up onto the curb and hit a telephone pole. i want to die.

after a few moments some people come help push my car back onto the road. one of the ladies says my car looks fine other than about a 2 inch long scrape in the front bumper. when they finish i thank them, one of the guys compliments me on my ride (which makes me feel like an even bigger jackass) and the lady then tells me about a dent that 'isnt too bad' that i should be able to get taken out easily with a fix a dent kit. so i get home, check out the damage. and find the dent. the dent is right over my passenger side wheel. im thinking what the hell, i hit the pole dead on, where did this come from? there were no marks on the paint at all so did it buckle? after a few days of thinking about it i realized what happened. one of the guys pushing my car was standing right where the dent was. he dented it trying to push me off of the curb. the scratch sucks yea, but the dent is by far the worst damage on the car, and i didnt even do it. i cant be mad at him, he was only trying to help me out, but it still sucks. ive learned my lesson though. the car is in the garage till march. next year its going in there in november and not coming out till spring, snow tires or no.

yea i know i need to get them, my plan was just to never drive in the snow again. heh we all know now how effective that was! as far as the dent, my roommates dad is having a truck restored for him and he thinks he can get his body guy to hook me up either free or super cheap. as far as the bumper goes, i think ill just leave the scratch till i buy either the autoexe or a mazdaspeed replica kit. hehe hopefully i can get that taken care of before the meet in june.

Yeah....I'm a programmer. I concentrate on the software admin. & risk analyst(banking) parts a little more, though, so staring at code all day every day isn't something I've accustomed myself to.

It's weird, a lot of 8 owners seem to be in the programming field. :) I guess programmers' salaries are perfect equilibrium to maximize RX8 purchases. heh heh. Someone in the mazda sales department should check into this.

Yeah I'd be down for that... only problem is I threw out a tube that's needed for the stock air. It's a tube and has some can of box in the middle connects from this green solenoid vavle to a white nipple on the engine... :)

Getting another one from Mazda shouldn't cost very much. But I don't know that bypassing that when you put your stock air cleaner back in will make that much of a difference in the engine's output.

I'll also be very interested in what you get on the Dyno. My elevation here is ~5100 ft, which obviously makes a difference. What's yours?

Welcome to the Mountain forum, kikiboi, hope to see you a lot around here... and CONGRATS on your soon-to-be RX-8!!!

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. As I recall, your car would sticker at around $32500 - $33000, so well over a grand in discount is not bad at all. And regardless, once you have it, you'll see that what you paid is FAR less important than the fact that you DO have it. This car really hooks you. :D

Welcome to the forum, kikiboi!!

Sounds like you got a GREAT deal. Josh is a pretty good guy, I think they ended up giving credit for the sale of MY velo red rx-8 to Dave Whitmer, but I really dealt with Richard for the most part. Congratulations on your purchase! I only got about $500 off sticker....that's the price of buying early, I guess.

If you're interested, a bunch of rotaries will be down at Modern Garage this weekend (4677 S Cherry St. (440 W.) ) for a "dyno day". I'll be down there, too. We have 1 RX8 dynoing, his username is JERCS on this forum. This would give you a chance to meet the "rotorheads" of SLC. :) Sounds like there will be about 10 cars dynoing, mostly 7s, couple of FDs, FCs, etc. Let me know if you're interested.

i went to d.dahle first. big mistake. josh was the guy i worked with and i assumed since he was a friends brother he wouldnt try to do me in the ass. i was wrong. he wouldnt talk finite numbers with me until i had 'agreed to purchase' a car from him, he kept trying to sell me a green rx8 i told him i didnt want, and he wouldnt even tell me if they could find one i wanted until i agreed. after about 4 hrs i left the dealership. long story short i ended up buying from freeway mazda (after another adventure with bountiful mazda) at $250 over invoice. they gave me no hassle and were very pleasant to deal with.

josh still sends me letters every week trying to get me to come buy a car from him.

thanks you guys. and with project, i kind of agree with you with josh, he is kind of pushy in a sence. i really wanted velocity red, which i am getting, but he kept on pushing for the sunlight silver, which by no means is a bad color.

he also sent me all these letters at first, because i was going to purchase the sti instead, but just couldnt fall in love with the car because it looks like any other wrx, but with a high spoiler.

but the rx8 doesnt look like any of the cars that mazda sells.

well anyways, i am sure i cant make it to the rx meet, but i would love to see you guys soon though.

How far in is it? If it's close to the edge, you may be able to gently pry it up, get the booger out, and wet it again and stick it back down. After you wet it, be sure to squeege all the water out. It takes new tint about 3 days to really cure, and if you're careful, you can fix little bobbles like this pretty easilly.

its pretty close to center in the drivers side back window. its a tiny little fragment of fiber from a cloth. its tiny so as long as its not going to cause problems later i dont mind leaving it. also one other thing, ive never had my windows tinted before and i was noticing some large light/dark streaks. is this normal while it cures? im kinda feeling nervous since i had less than legal tint put on and paid cash and i doubt it came with any guarantee...

also i saw a sunlight silver around 4pm friday heading east on 2nd south. any takers?

youre right it all went away cept for one big streak that happened to be outside of the tint and wiped right off.

in other news...

ive been outside since noon (its 7 now) washing and zainoing my car. my wrists back and arms are killing me and i have a nice sunburn on my freshly shaven head BUT hot damn does my car look good.

i started with a dawn wash, the the claybar which removed all of that nasty adhesive the dealer left on there. then i zaino car washed it, slapped on one coat of z5 and 2 coats of z2. as i was buffing out the last coat there was a classic utah sunset (ours are the best anywhere!) and i could see every detail perfectly mirrored in my car. i would have taken pics but i dont have a camera. :( :(

while i was out there, i had several neighbors walk up to admire my car. sadly none of them were attractive females. oh well, ill take my victories where i can get them... :)

Sup fellow mountain guys,

I have seen some opinions on some dealers here in utah. There are two that I have been strongly considering on buying from, one was the Freeway Mazda in ogden, and Allen Patch Mazda in orem. Has anyone had experience for the one in orem. Right now that is the closest and I know the two I am considering are on different sides of the valley and the closest to me right now is the one in orem. I live in price, but my parents live in kemmerer,wy so I spend queit abit of in wyoming and ogden is closer. The things i just said might sound stupid but I am willing to travel almost any dealer in utah to be treated right right and good a good price. To bad my favorite dealer is a GM only dealer. This also will be my first non GM vehicle.

When I first heard of the rx-8 and started reading about it the more I wanted it. Then in december i finally test drove a Black one and loved, I live how when i got on the throttle how the front would rise slightly (maybe i just thought) but was just amazed. The rotary has always been my favorite engine and I have spend alot of time researching and studying the rotary and consider myself every knowledgeable on this engine. I loved hitting redline in the car. :D

Sry to bore you guys I just can't wait any longer, depending on constuction season I might be able to get one, Price of the car isn't the problem, its the insurence. The car i am looking at getting is a Winning Blue rx-8. 6Spd, Leather (going to have a shop redo the seats to match the car, like in the red ones).

Thank guys sry to take up time and space, I to confess my love for this car. Oh one last thing who likes to listen to 97.1 ZHT, I still laugh at the "What michael jackson is doing at this moment" and the "Martha Stewart in Jail" things they play, and I agree utah sun sets can't be beat.

CEL,as JERCS said, and also tell them you had trouble with flooding. According to Mazda, if the customer complains about flooding this L flash is the definitive fix, and will be done if that's mentioned.

Freeway was awesome to deal with from the very beginning, and like you I was willing to travel to any dealer in the state to be treated right. I will admit though that I never visited the Orem dealership.

For insurance I use Bear River Mutual. They are a very strict insurance company (they will not insure rx-7's for instance) and they gave me a rate that was half of what Geico etc gave me. You might want to look into them.

Thanks fellow utah guys for the dealship recomendations. I wish I could get the 8 tomorrow but not ready yet since i am 6'5" I need to test drive somemore. I am playing to do that soon. Last one i test drove was a buy back it was black, cloth seats, and manuel and had 2,400 miles on it. It felt great to me. I just can't see why people are complaining about the clutch is more difficult in the 8. I dirve a manuel truck and it is alot different then a car. The only other manuel car i was drove was a stupid honda civic (yuck I really hate those cars) I didn't have any problems with the clutch in the 8. I was like this is awesome when the clutch started engaging. I will have to see what I finally decide on. Nothing is going to change my mind on this car the engine could blow up every 5,000 miles and I still wouldn't care. The car is plenty fast for me but I am not buying it for speed, I am buying it for the rotary, and that fact that is so much fun to drive. Thanks for listening to me. I gotta plan a trip to Copper globe, goblin valley and other cool places like that. I wish I could take me friends 8 but need to take my truck because of the dirt roads. My number one rule, this car will never touch dirt, that is what trucks are for. I love utah, such awesome scenery in my back yard, that poeople travel all over the world to see. Thanks again for you help.

Aight, guys... I know nothing about cars, let alone rotary engines. So, don't crucify me for my ignorance... (Thanks in advanced. :D)

I was driving past Sinclair on West Temple and 9th south... I noticed that natural gas is sitting at 91 cents a gallon... What's the possibility of converting a rotary engine to natural gas? Does the mechanics of the rotary engine prevent that?

Just a random thought I had...

Sputnik
05-06-2004, 10:07 AM
Actually, if I remember correctly, the general rotary engine design is better for a multiple fuel setup (you can put different fuels in the one engine, with differing results, of course). But, I don't know how hard it would be to convert the specific Renesis design to natural gas.

I just picked up a second job manufacturing custom concrete countertops and sinks. With my new source of income I'm going to be saving up for the Auto Exe kit. I really like white on the RX-8 and I'm toying with the idea of having my entire car repainted when I get the kit installed. Can any of you recommend an excellent shop to get this done? Also, what might I expect to pay to do something like this?

PS- If anyone is in the market for custom concrete countertops or tables, drop me a line! :D

JivenMushu
05-11-2004, 11:57 AM
I called a couple natural gas conversion shops around the valley (grand total of 2), and they said it could be done, but the conversion kit has to be EPA certified. There is not a conversion kit for a rotary engine out there EPA certified, and he said that he couldn't even preform a conversion without it. :shrugs: I guess it's too expensive to produce an EPA certified kit, and there aren't any rotary engines out there looking to convert...

I finally got my RX-8 back from Bountiful Mazda yesterday... (I should say that I got it back from Murdock Chevrolet, who does the body work for Bountiful Mazda.) Almost 3 weeks ago, someone tried to steal the car... They did about $2,000 worth of damage to the car... It was miserable seeing all of you out there in your RX-8's for the three weeks while I was behind the wheel of a truck. ;)

Anyway, I remember some posts from Project a time ago... Did you ever get around to fixing your dents and bumper? If so, did they have to order replacement parts? How long did it take? I understand the RX-8 is new and that most places don't have the parts immediately available, but three weeks?!

guitarskiWelcome to the Mountain Forum guitarski, and congratulations on your "new" RX-8! You're gonna love it!

Yes, the battery issue has come up before. It's been discussed in the Tech forum, so you might try searching there for more info. But in brief, the stock RX-8 battery is not a particularly good unit - it barely seems to have enough power to start the car sometimes! A lot of people have replaced them with better units like the Optima batteries. But before you do this, you might want to consider hooking up an ampmeter between the negative terminal of the battery and the negative cable and checking for current flow with the ignition off. It shouldn't be more than (as I recall) 15 mA - but again, this info can be found in the tech section. If you don't find it with a search, try just scanning the thread titles.

Hope this helps!

So.... has anyone talked to you yet about the Rocky Mountain RX-8 Club? Check the URL in my sig block for our website... :D

Just wanted to introduce myself and join the group. I just bought a new 2004 RX-8 earlier this week. Sunlight silver metallic 6-speed with Grand Touring Pkg, Appearane Pkg, and Rear Wing Spoiler. I bought it at Bountiful Mazda at a reasonable price over invoice with a current $1500 rebate which actually took the car under invoice. I doubt they will do this on the 05's but they had exactly what I wanted in an 04 with only 35 miles so I was very happy. As near as I can tell, the only difference for the 05's is the key. The 05's have a pop out key.

After reading on some of the general sites and looking at the history on this thread, it's obvious that I need to invest in some snow tires (and possibly wheels). I'm interested in hearing what others have done. Bountiful Mazda is telling me that the Goodyear UltraGrip is a very good tire for the money and should perform as well as the Blizzex (SP?) tires. What have others done in this area?

tharkness, Let me be the first to say welcome. I drive my RX-8 year round and I use 17" Blizzaks during the winter, and have had absolutely no problems in snow or rain. If I was in your shoes I would have gotten the 04 just like you did, and do what I'm doing and get the 05 key as an extra. :D

If your interested, drop on over to www.rockymountainrx8.com that is our more localized club, with it's own Utah chapter. In fact we are putting together a meeting for Dec. 4th, and your welcome to come and see what everyone has done with their cars. (that is if they haven't stored them for the winter). We also meet with the local SLCRotary club (mainly rx7's). PM me if your interested and I can email you the details as they develop.

IGOZMZM, nice to meet you. Thanks for the info. Where did you get your wheels from? Did you get the pressure guages to go in them or just go without. Mazda was quoting me $114 per gauge. Also, thanks for the site. I'll look into it.

Well lets see...... My 17" w/ Blizzaks I got from TireRack.com and at that time they didn't offer the pressure sensors. I hear if you call them and order the tires/rims they can see if they are avalible and give you prices. And my 18" Dark chrome rims I got from Freeway Mazda ;)

You get used to the sensor light lit during the winter, just have to remember to check the tires like you did (or were suppose to) before you had the TPMS.

IGOZMZM, what did you do with your stock wheels? So, you went with 17" for better traction in the winter? Not sure if I want to spend $400 just for a little sensor light to go off if there really isn't anything that effects the warranty. I'm going to start looking seriously this week becuase this is my only day-to-day car and I don't want to get stuck. Last winter we got hit early and hard. I'll check out tirerack as well. Thanks for the tip.

IGOZMZM
11-14-2004, 05:29 PM
I still have my stock wheels some where around here. I didn't go with the 17" for traction, I did it mainly because of cost and the fact that 18" were not that readily available at this time last year. And it is also easier to just change tires and wheels when the time comes, rather than take the rims to some place and chance the rims being damaged everytime they get changed. Nothing affects any part of the warranty, just a warning light that was required to be put in.

Yes you will get stuck if you don't get snow tires for your 8, I know from experiance. I'd hit either Tirerack or Discount tire. I've purchased from both, and been please with both. They have comparable prices for the most part, just make sure you check both so you don't get screwed on price.

Did you get the Blizzak WS-50's or the LM-22's? I have read that some will simply not be happy with the WS-50's because they aren't a performance tire and there is a very noticable difference between them and the LM-22's. From everything I have read, 215/55/17's seem like the way to go if you use the minus theory. I'm going to order from tire rack this week. Just looking for some last minute input if there is any.

I got WS-50 215/55/17's. I figured how much performance am I wanting in the winter? I want traction over and above anything. Now if we lived in a place that got very little snow and more rain than snow, then I would have considered the LM-22's, but that is not the case here in Utah. I have taken them up Ogden Canyon to a resturant (unpaved parking) during a snow storm, and they handled like champions.

Little Cottonwood Canyon is one of my favorite places on Earth. I envy y'all for looking at those mountains daily. Don't take them for granted, that's a little slice of heaven. :)

Hi guys, I've had my Titanium RX-8 for about a month and a half, and I've been on the board for about the same. I don't know if I've seen any of you on the road or not, I don't really see 8's too often. I'm in south Salt Lake valley. You can see some of my pics from Suncrest (top of the mountain between Utah Valley and SL Valley) in my post in the gallery... http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=49003 ... and a few more ... http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=47661

Anyway, hello to you all.

BTW, if you see me on the road, I'm stock, with the exception of fog lights which come on with only the parking lights (weird... ) ;)

I bought mine at Bountiful Mazda around Thanksgiving. Snow... not too bad, but I have to be really soft on the pedal on the roads during pretty much any slick conditions. I have slid a lot, one major time on I-15 from 70mph.. I was just holding the accelerator steady, but I was going up a hill and I guess the tires just didn't stick well enough and the backend kicked out to the side, and I didn't get straight again without it swerving from side to side about 4 times - I didn't have my foot on either pedal, just slowing down. But I've been as careful as I can be, and it's been a little scary sometimes. I just can't justify the money for a new set of wheels and snow tires. Hopefully winter will just cease to exist :) I know I'd be happy not having to wash the car every 4 days.

I made the investment and bought wheels and tires from Tire Rack for about $1200. But man, what a difference. I live on an incline and I wouldn't be able to get up the driveway without these. Good luck Nick. :)

IGOZMZM, I haven't washed mine for a couple weeks now. I'm sure that layer of salt is geat for the paint. :D

Thanks :) Though, even if I did get wheels and snow tires, I think I'd miss the beautiful stock 18's too much, especially on those dry, clear days that we are bound to have lots of if I were to prepare for the snow

Wow....I fall asleep on this thread for a couple weeks and look what happens. :) Welcome to the club, Nick, although it looks like you've been pretty active for a while already.

I'm in the South end of the valley, too, down in Riverton. I work in South Jordan, too. I see 8s every now and again, but there's enough that I can't really pick them out by owner, anymore. I think I'm the only Utahn that has been dumb enough to throw 20" heavy-a$$ chrome wheels on my vehicle as of yet, so I'm pretty easy to pick out, Velo Red, red calipers, and half of a mazdaspeed kit (going to be finished, someday) :) Somewhat of a "sore-thumb" in the RX8 community. Oh well, it'll be done soon, hopefully.

Hope to see ya around!

I saw a red 8 up on South Mountain today. I think he waved, but I was facing the sun, couldn't see for sure. Anyone on the bored live over there? Oh, he also had a "Tire Rack" decal on the windshield.

Okay guys, this is a long thread, and I'm too lazy to read all of it (okay, I skimmed through most of it, but not all of it), so I really apologize if this has come up before :) I've heard of these flooding problems a lot before, and really they kind of concern me. Its not really something that I want to deal with, especially when I pay $30,000 for a car. Sooo, my question is, how many miles do you Utah (or anywhere else it is cold for that matter) guys have one your cars? Have they ever flooded, or have you ever had a hard time with them running in the cold weather? Thanks guys (I'm a girl, and as hard as I try to understand cars, I don't usually pick up on it as fast as you guys!)

Well, I just got mine in August and have 5000 miles. I haven't had any problems with it. And as for cold weather, it has heated seats, which is more than I can say for the S2000. I think most of the issues were with the ealry builds (beginning of 2004 and earlier). One of my friends at work also has one and he got it when they first came out(back in 2003). I believe he's got about 15k miles on it. He's had all the flashes and applicable TSB's, but hasn't had any problems nor has he ever flooded. And he races in the SCCA events too.

I think the biggest issue people have is the gas mileage. Both of us get about 18mpg, but can pull 21mpg with just straight highway driving. I don't care about it, but there are plenty of threads on the subject.

Let us know if oyu have any other questions...

I've got over 24,000 miles on my velo red, Traci, I don't rev to 3000 when I turn my car off (like I'm supposed to), I don't let my car warm up before turning it off, and I have never flooded, not once. Keep in mind, the only people that post about problems and respond on posts about problems, are, uh, the people having problems. People who can't relate to the problem don't usually care enough to voice their opinion on the matter.

The actual ratio of people with flooding problems versus the people without is VERY low. Flooding wouldn't be a reason to avoid purchasing this awesome vehicle......in my opinion. :)

Well, I was really impressed with Bountiful mazda, clean and orginized shop, and a really nice show room, and the salesman talk to me, not my dad. Hey I know what you are saying man. I went into the Murray Mazda dealership as a 19 year old. They didn't give me the time of day. That sucks to have that sort of interaction. However, I've NEVER considered the salesmen when I'm rating a dealer. You interact with them only once, and just by the nature of what they do & how they make their money, I usually never find myself very fond of ANY salesmen. I look at the service department, parts department, etc., the parts of the dealership that you have more than just a one time interaction with. Salesmen are salesmen. They come, they go, some you hate less than the other one.

Regardless, welcome to the board, Corndizzo!!

So who do you suggest for service in Northern Utah? I bought my car at Freeway and have taken it in 3 times now. I have been somewhat dissappointed on how they treat my car. I now have a scratch in the doorwell, they installed a '05 HU panel in my '04, they leave fingerprints all over it, I have little broken plastic pieces in the center console, and I forgot to tell them not to wash it. They took a perfectly clean car and left spots all over it.

Ahoy mateys!

I haven't checked in with you guys for a few months. Any casualties while i was gone?

Also, I haven't been too impressed with Bountiful Mazdas shop. I took it in to have the creaking rattle in my moonroof looked at as well as the swishing behind my glovebox under acceleration. The rattle they said was caused by 'dry tracks' which they 'lubricated'. The swishing they said was completely normal and did absolutely nothing about. When I got my car back and opened my moonroof, the rattle was still there only it was about twice as bad...

Also I was in an accident that bent a wheel hub and cracked the wheel last winter. They replaced the hub and the wheel and called it good. Everything seemed great at first but gradually I've been noticing a thrumming road noise and a regular vibration in the steering wheel that increases with speed. I asked them to check it out worried that I may have bent my axle as well and all they did was tell me the wheel hub wasnt bent (no shit, you replaced it with a new one!) and that its tire wear causing the vibrations. Now I realize that tire wear COULD be a cause of this problem but it seems to me they didn't do a very thorough job of investigating my concerns. :(

I'll probably keep taking my car there for engine related issues because I don't know who else to trust with a rotary but thats about it. Any of you have any recommendations on a good shop?

Casualties= Jercs (Guy), sold his 8, but he has a 1st or 2nd gen Rx7, now.

That sucks about the bountiful shop. The Murray shop has been good for me...? Modern Garage is also a good aftermarket/rotary shop(where we met before the porcupine pub meet) if you're beyond warranty. Otherwise, I'd suggest sticking with Mazda, even if you have to go to another dealership.

Well I took it in to the dealership and at that time it wouldn't go past about 6000 rpm. They found that the cat was plugged up. They replaced that and it would rev like normal again. Well they didn't find what actually plugged up the cat, and now I'm having the same symptoms as I was having before of lacking power now and then. And I am also having some really hard starting problems sometimes. I personally think there is a compression problem and that is contributing to the cat plugging up and the hard starts sometimes. So I will be taking it back in again soon. :( oh well it's a love hate relationship..... I hate having problems but I love the car enough to make it through the bad times. ;) :D

I had a starting problem a few months back. Came back from a trip and had not driven the car for 6 days. It would not start. Mazda came and towed it to Freeway. They said I flooded it. They cleaned it out, changed the spark plugs, and sent me on my way. They made sure to instruct me to rev it past 3000 for a second or two every time is turn the engine off. All work including towing was covered under warranty. Sounds kind of funny to me that they would cover this under warranty with no questions asked if I actually flooded the engine. Anyway, no problems since.

I had the same thing happen here! When me and the wife bought the car we were informed that we could not just drive a little ways and then turn the car off. Tis was also mentioned in the owners manual as well. That we had to let the 8 warm up to normal operating temp and then we could shut it down. The tow bill the cost of the de-flooding process and such was all coverd under warranty. But we were informed that it would only be covered once. So far this has not happened again.

Hi everyone,
I am kinda new to the forums here. I purchased a 04 in February. I love the car. I got my first door ding this past weekend. I am wondering anyone know of a good body shop in the Salt Lake area. It didn't scratch the paint, but put a small dent in it. I hope to hear from you all. My poor baby. Oh, I live in W.V.C, so if anyone sess a black with the wing in the area, it is me.

I also purchased my '04 in February of this year and got my first dent while golfing. That will be my last trip to Bountiful Ridge. After a company golf tournament I came back to a car covered in dried grass that had been washed off a lawn mower next to my car. After a pissed off look around at the car I noticed a dent in the driver quarter panel. The car had been hit by a golf ball.

I talked to the golf pro and filed a report (no call back, typical). He offered to wash the car off with a pressure washer, no way on this earth was he using a pressure washer on my car. And that is all he offered, (no free golf).

So the car is fixed now. I have the utmost praise for the :D DentPro :D office in Ogden. can't even tell it was touched. I don't have pictures of the after right now but here is what it looked like after I got a camera and had wiped some of the grass off.

I'm sorry to hear about everyone's bad times.

I've been rather busy lately with work so I haven't been able to get out much and plan for stuff. So here is my current situation: I had planned on going to SevenStock 8. I even have the time off from work to do so, but with costs of gas, friends falling out, minor car problems (read about it a few pages back), and other miscellaneous things..... I've basically come to end that SS8 is out of reach this year for me.... :(

Now for my solution: I've decided that we haven't gotten together for sometime now, and it's long over due. I'd like to meet all the new owners, and catch up on stuff with everyone else that I've already met. So my idea is to have a meeting/road trip/getaway from normal weekend/day. I'm going to be going out to Wendover the weekend of SS8 (Oct. 8th and 9th) and would like to invite anyone that would like to come and hang out and have good times. I will probably throw out an invite to the RX-7 guys too so we can have a fun little caravan going out there (carpooling is an option too since gas is a factor). if we have enough interest I will even see if they can hook us up on a hotel deal (I usually get my nights free from playing too much  ) Well either way chime back in if there is interest since time is drawing near.

SledGeek,
I hear you about the dent issue. I recieved my first one this weekend. Someone opend up there four door on me. thankfully the paint was scracthed, but a small dent is there. It just bothers me though, and is frustrating. I wish when people do that they would give you the courtesy to at least leave some money or contact info on your windshield.
I am going to get mine looked at by the people that we use at my old dealership I used to work out. They use the Dent King. How much did you cost you to get your golfball dent out?

IGOZMZM,
I would be down for a Wendover meet. I was going there quite often for awile and now I only make it up for the Blackjack tournaments. What games do you play while you are there, and where do you prefer to stay.
I play mostly Blackjack and prefer to stay at the Montego Bay. I am going up this weekend for the Peppermill Blackjack tourney.
Let me know what happens with the meet. Oh, I am gonna take my car in for the recalls. I am taking to D. Dahle, has anyone ever been to Allen Patch in Orem?
Where did or do you guys take your 8 for work?

DentPro got me for $95. I was so glad to see it look as if it was brand new I would have paid $195. They were great.

I took my car to Freeway Mazda in Riverdale for the recall. I got my best gas mileage ever right after that (21.x mpg) recall, also had my first oil change at the same time. I am currently averaging (19.x mpg).

Also just received a DVD from Mazda today on oil consumption and cold starting, I had read about most people receiving this months ago. They took their time getting it out to everyone.

Wow! I might have to check them out. Do you have the number available? I called someone I know today, that guy who does the work for my old dealership today, but hasn't called back.
I am scheduled to do the recalls at Dahle, I haven't had that great of experiences at Bountiful. Their shop is state of the art, but the servie that is questionable. I took in a few months ago, for a reflash, and they came out and said the computer that was doing it went down right in the middle of the flash. Which sounded a bit dangerous. I ended up having to go back for it. I think they were just full of it originally, but damn it is a nice looking service dept. But I guess as my one my lady friends told me it isn't always about looks.
I did order the 05 key fob today. I am looking forward to it.

Well as of this morning I'm currently without my RX-8 :( I finally got it in for:

Oil Change
Recalls
Light grinding noise from the rear
Lack of power sometimes after long drives
Hard starts
Front brakes squealing (should be getting the new brake pads)
Oil light coming on when it isn't low (should be getting the new oil pan)
and part of the E-brake cover broke off

I'm afraid that they will come back once again and tell me they can't find anything wrong with it (hard starts, lack of power). But has anyone heard of any problems with the rear differential making a grinding noise, or any other part for that matter. Sadly I'm driving a Ford Expedition. It's like trying to drive a damn oil tanker compared to my 8.

Well, I took my car in for service at D. Dahle Mazda in Murray Ut.
I asked for the following:
Current Recall for Ball Joint and Heat Pad.
Squealing Breaks
22,500 Service
Moonroof Rattle
Drivers Side Mirror Rattle
Rust on Hubs.

Well anyone want to guess, what work was performend?....In a few seconds, first you need the story. I called ahead twice to confirm a time. The first time I called they said drop it off all day. The next day I called to set up a confirmed time, thankfully someone else answered and I did. I went there, told the Service Advisor what was wrong. She mentioned she would look into it. Well, 8 hours later I called. They just got done. I did get a rental it was a bron Ford Focus. I can't complain at least I got a car. Well, I picked up the paperwork from the receptionist as they were closing service and had dropped it off up there. I looked at the invoice, the only thing they did was the recalls, everything else wasn't on the paperwork. I thought maybe the didn't write it down. Wrong, apparently they only did the recall, supposedly. I swear, how hard is it to be honest? Needless to say, I called today and they apologized. Didn't offer a free oil change or anything like that. I am supposed to take it down there again on Saturday. I was thinking about taking somewhere else like Bountiful However, the last time I was there in in Bountiful I was having a reflash, the computer went down, and they couldn't do it. Which made me nervous when they said it went down while doing mine. I was afraid to bring it back there again, since who knows what could happen there next. At least the work would get done right. So needless to say, anyone have any good experience with any of the Service Depts in Utah. Let me know.
D. Dahle Mazda THUMBS DOWN! I DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Well when I went in last week to make my appt. I watched the guy type in my concerns. Also when I dropped off the car today I saw all the stuff on the paperwork. Now if they will actually find the problem and then proceed to fix it is the story to come......

I have been taking my 8 to Freeway Mazda in Riverdale Utah. Talk to Jerry if you go there, he seems to be a good guy. :shrugs:
