Right now it's 30's in the daytime, and dry roads...but by the time you get here, anything is possible. Could be a blizzard and minus 5, lol.

Our Explorer and Subaru don't mind the snow and ice, when the 8 stays in the garage. You get used to driving in it, especially after driving through 35 winters (good grief, have I really been driving that long? :uhh: )

You can get a beer at most restaraunts; and there are lots of bars. Just stay out of the ones that you see green lasers shooting around inside...unless you like that kind of thing...

If you want booze with your strippers you'd better be okay with pasties, if your okay with not drinking you can see it all, just depends on your taste.

I just picked up my copy of the 2009 Salt Lake City Rotary calendar tonight.

Jethro's Sunlight Silver '07 RX-8 is the October car! And the only 8 featured. You can just barely see bose's 8 in the background of one group shot on a different month, however. All the other months are FC & FD 7's.

I'm not sure if Shep ordered extras; I don't think he did since we paid in advance.

This so cool and it's going up in my office at work. :)

BTW, I was out at Miller on Monday. Racing fuel has not dropped one cent in price since gas prices came down! 91 octane is about the same as in town, but anything higher is still priced like it was last summer. And if that's old gas in those tanks out there, it's stale by now.

bose
01-21-2009, 10:19 AM
they are probably too lazy to change the prices, at least I hope. That wouldn't be right charging high prices for stale gas.

I don't get on SLC Rotary enough, I didn't even know about the calender. that's my own fault. Glad you made the cut JT, my car isn't blingin' enough to be featured, you have the nice appearance package.

Naw, all I have is front and rear rotary accents, a rear spoiler, clear corners, and chrome exhaust tips- I don't even have strakes (yet)! I think the only reason I made the cut is because I shelled-out the bucks, lol. But I definitely have the newest car on the calendar, seeing as all those 7's are at least ten years old now...the FC's are 20! Man, time flies. I can't believe it's been 29 years since I bought my FB.

bose
01-21-2009, 02:04 PM
For some reason I thought you did, oh well. Awesome your car made the calender either way. Did anyone go to the car show this last weekend. There were some sweet rides for sure. The new 8 is pretty freakin' nice, the new seats are orgasmic. And they changed the dipstick location to a great spot and now it comes with a 4 point strut brace.

Jethro Tull
01-22-2009, 02:28 PM
I'm glad I took the 8 out a few days last week since it looks like the dry weather is leaving for a while, so she's back on her carpet in the garage. I managed to burn-off a half a tank of gas and filled it back up with "dirt cheap" (compared to last summer) premium.

Even after almost 2 years, it still amazes me how a spin in that car just lifts my spirits. I always get moody and a little down in winter time, probably a mild form of Seasonal Mood Disorder, but the RX-8 is a surefire cure.

Only 5 more weeks until winter's back is broken. :)

just heard from subaru and they said that landcar denied the repair.. the guy said that it was wear from racing lol, I hate landcar... if you ever buy from a dealer and they offer you a landcar warrenty, don't take it. So in case you didn't figure it out I picked up my 8 at the subi dealer in Sandy and they offered to give me a powertrain warrenty from landcar, subaru has been pretty good about service but they are slow, they tried to say that second and third gear are the most used gears but landcar sent out a second represenative to check it out and said "no go". A mechanic there named Carl is proclaimed to have worked for mazda for a few years before coming over to subaru but im not sure how much he really knows about the 8. Anyway I am weighing my options and am going to go look at it myself tomorrow, has anyone heard of taking the new transmission in the new 8 and putting it in the older version? Im sorry but I just don't like the new style as much... I just want the more reliable trans.

bose

Talk to Sheldon @ Mazmart his screen name is Mazmart6 on here and see what they have. I'm pretty sure the 09 trans is a direct replacement, not sure on the cost but I think a few months ago he quoted someone like 2000 for a brand new 09 trans. Plus shipping. That is a tough break though, I know how you feel though seeing as I have no engine/powertrain warranty. Sorry to hear it.

Are you over 100,000 miles? Whats up with that?

bose
01-28-2009, 02:50 PM
Nope, I only have 48,XXX miles on my car. Mazda North America has voided my warranty and flagged my VIN, because "my highflow cat and exhaust caused my engine to lose compression" or some BS to that effect. Which is crap cause my car runs fine and isn't low on power. So the real reason is the dealership was being lazy and wanted to bleed me dry. The only thing my car needed was coils and plugs, haven't had any problems since.

Every time I read about an 8 with a problem, the next time I'm in mine I'm always listening, paranoid! My engine has been flawless in the nearly 2 years since I drove her off the lot. 8580 miles as of today. It was so nice when I opened the garage today, that I left the Explorer home and drove the 8 to work. And I rarely drive it at all in December, January, and February, scared of the salt monster. I've only put about 100 miles on her since Thanksgiving.

Say, who's premixing around here, besides me and bose?

And is anyone running any thing other that 5w20 dino oil? I am thinking of switching to Redline 5w30. Rest of the world uses that grade and we have more engine failures vs. rest of the world, and if nothing else do it to spite the EPA and their emissions.

hullo ya'll. Havent had a chance to post on here for a bit so I thought I'd let you know whats going on with that b8tmobile(for those of you who dont know me im the sucker in the black 8 with the black rims and the white batman sticker on the back window).

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/Dariusdemon/BackInBlack.jpg

Anyway I dont know if anyone remembers my lil mishap last march where I smashed into a cement wall on I-15...twice...

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/Dariusdemon/SadDay.jpg

But after I got that fixed I had a weird engine noise at higher revs where my car would sounds like chewbacca, or a suburu. It went away for a bit but it keeps coming back (accompanied by a loss of power but its possible thats in my head). Seems worse when its been running for awhile. My buddy and I think it may have something to do with an exhaust manifold hole or something but I still dont get why it would come and go like that... I drove to Long Beach this weekend and on the way there it was SO bad! sounded like it was going to fall apart! But when I got there?? HOLY HELL! I felt like I was in a Porsche! I know the air density gives us a power boost but i seriously felt like I had 30 more hp and the engine noise was back to its harmonic orgasm inducing tones. I come back to Utah though and its back to chewbacca... im doing 65 in 6th on I-80 near 13th E. I put the peddle to the metal and I actually LOST speed WTF? Its been resting for a day and when I started it up it was idling at about 3200. Thats alot higher than normal for my 8 but It was running just fine again afterwards...weird stuff...I also have and engine light turn on every so often but it goes away on its own. The first time this happened i took it to autozone and they told me it was because my intake was making me run lean so I've been hesitant to take it anywhere right away when the engine light pops on because its usually gone by the next time i start it up. Anyway some weird stuff... :uhh:

P.S. If you've never had a chance to drive your 8 at sea level i recommend you plan on it sometime! You'll fall in love with it all over again! and incase the above picture horrified you i assure my 8 is prettier than ever! as you can see here! vv

I think your describing the marbles in a blender that is often referred to. What octane rating are you using, how many miles are on it, better yet how many miles are on your current plugs, and coils? Is the cel solid or does it flash? Also could potentially be a dying cat. Sure does looks good though.

04rx8gr

Good to see Darius still among the living!

DariusDemon
02-11-2009, 02:24 AM
hmmm... Well it's an 05' with 43k. Its definitely not just on start up. It actually sounds best on start up and its seems to get worse the longer i run it. Like i said on the way to Long Beach it sounded absolutely horrid. I've never put anything but Chevron premium in it. I bought the car with 19k miles on it so I'm sure the coils and plugs have never been replaced. You think thats it? I really dont wanna go to the dealer...:eyetwitch

DariusDemon
02-11-2009, 02:30 AM
oh and about the engine light. It usually comes on solid and it only does it during winter months... Its usually when i drive it hard but sometimes it comes on for no apparent reason. Only once has it flashed. Whats the difference? Should I be scared?!:scared:

bose
02-11-2009, 10:40 AM
Don't take it to the dealership, buy the coils and plugs and call me, I will do it for lunch which is a lot cheaper than a dealer's labor rates. Don't be scared, just don't procrastinate on it. The solid cel can mean a ton of different things, a flashing cel is a misfire. Last year just after winter started mine started doing this, changed plugs and coils and began premixing, my car has never misfired or any cel's other than my cat that threw a code in the summer, but that's unrelated. I would be willing to bet your coils and plugs are tired and not doing their best. You'll need to look around for the best prices. I got my spark plugs from sparkplugs.com and my coils from the dealer. It's going to cost like 200 in parts, but it will make your car much happier.

On a side note I am getting my BHR coil kit on 2/18, I can't wait to install it.:lol2:

raleighRX8
02-11-2009, 02:32 PM
I bought my coils at the dealer for $33 each, and the plugs at Summit Racing for $15 each, I also relpaced the wires. It still made noise when the secondaries opened, The premix is the only thing that made it go away. Winter gas is mixed differently than summer gas, it is mixed to burn at colder temps, so in the rotary, it tends to detonate early. I believe that is alot of the problem.

What's very low compression? I was told the same thing, mine is been running fine. There are a lot a variables that go into a compression test, rpm, was the engine fully warmed up, is the battery in good condition and are the connections good. I would personally ask to see the results. But if you can get a new engine under warranty HELL YEAH.

I wonder what other kinds of 'tests' they are doing.

My second gear is always a bit notchy when the tranny's cold, but once warmed-up it smooths out.

Well after two years of mulling it over, I finally ordered myself a set of strakes. I opted for the polished stainless-steel from RX8strakes.com, figuring it an excellent price for metal strakes. Also I've read good things about the fit of these strakes. Seems the stock strakes rub your paint off where they touch sheet metal. That's excellent new 04. Glad to hear it's getting fixed and congrats on the new clutch. Woo Hoo.

JT I have school on Wednesday and Thursday night but am free every other day.

Snowboard, Defiantly check your clutch pedal assembly, also what kind of trans fluid is in there, it needs to be a GL-4 grade. Mazda once upon a time was reccommending and may still be using a GL-5. Which is bad for the soft brass syncros causes a lot of wear. So you may need to switch to something with friction modifiers removed.

Remember that it's aluminum, so if you want to mod it, welding will be tricky. It's thin. You'll have to use fiberglass.

I was going to mold it; (still might) and possibly make a custom hood down the road.

If you decide to buy it, let me splash a quick mold off it first. Won't hurt it a bit.

Jethro Tull
02-17-2009, 02:36 PM
then Ill put the clutch in myself

Just be sure you have a good set of fairly tall jack-stands, at least a pair of floor jacks or a tranny jack, and a good creeper. These cars are LOW...

Also, remember your driveline is CF. Don't damage it!

Bose, will he have to unbolt the engine to pull the tranny?

bose
02-17-2009, 02:41 PM
Yes, it will need to be unbolted from the engine, the driveline removed and the cross members, and with our special little car you have to buy a special clutch tool from Mazda, otherwise it's almost impossible to do.

Thanks for acknowledging that, Darius. It was a pain in the ass to shoot- more than it should have been. Took me about 20 tries, with 2 different cameras, and several lighting set-ups, before I got that shot. I couldn't get close enough with the regular camera, so I ended up using the HD camcorder in "still" mode. It can focus so close that the subject can almost be touching the lens, and still have passable depth of field.

I'll shoot them again once installed.

Snowboard, I never got back to the computer until late, so I missed your post until now.

Can I get a raincheck?

I have to test those strakes. I swear I've got an additional 30hp now. ;)

bose
02-23-2009, 11:09 AM
The strakes give you additional down force. Giving you tons more gripz.

Darius, The BHR kit is pretty pricey I got mine with plugs for like $560. But I won't have to change coils for many more miles than stock coils and they have a better spark overall. They are just a small group of guys out of AZ, who find the areas in which our car can use a little help and research ways to fix them. They have been testing them for months in their own cars and them mass produce them for us. The best way to get a feel for them is to contact their head dude in charge, Charles R. Hill. Ask him some questions about it to get a feel, he's a very knowledgeable guy and very nice. He always responds to my pm's too which is nice. But there is a bit of a wait on them right now cause it seems everyone is buying them up. They are all made to order and hand made.

I went for a small cruise last night around 12 little bit of rain not so great but who cares at least it's not snow.

Darius, maybe you've said it before so forgive me if I've forgotten, but do you use premix?

If not, I'll give you a free dose for one tank so you can see if it helps.

Jethro Tull
02-24-2009, 10:58 PM
JT, what about me? I want some too lol.

Ok, here's what I'll do.

I'll give you and any other local who wants to try it, a free shot of 8 ounces- one tank's worth.

OR-

I just ordered a new case, so I'll sell anybody a quart bottle for six bucks (that covers the cost of the premix plus shipping charges). That will give you enough premix for 4 full tanks at 8 ounces per tank. You'll probably want to run a few tanks before you make up your mind on it anyway.

And I still have a few of the 4-ounce squeeze bottles. I'll toss one in with every quart of pre-mix until I run out.

Sound like a plan?

DariusDemon
02-25-2009, 03:17 AM
well i just filled up again (on chevron premium) and my engine light came on soon after, again. It sounds and runs fine though. Sighhh...

As for premixing no I dont. I've put in some octane booster 2 or 3 times before but didnt notice anything different. What kind of premix have you been using Jethro?

bose
02-25-2009, 10:39 AM
Most of those octane boosters are useless, there are only like two brands that actually work, Amsoil, or Lucas. The rest have been proven to either do nothing at all, and some lower the Octane.

Premixing is completely different. JT and myself both use Idemitsu, I can tell you why I premix but it's really just preference so don't take it as a rule. I do it because I think Mazda doesn't inject the oil in our housings in the best location, and Mazda also realized it, After looking through many engine rebuild threads the general consensus is the middle of the apex seals are the area's having the most wear. Hence the addition of the third oil injector in the middle of the rotor housing on the new '09 RX8's. The problem is that the rotor housings get so hot the oil burns off before it can properly lubricate the middle of the apex seal. Premixing ensures you get the right amount of oil in the housing when you need it. The fuel injectors will spray the gas/oil mixture in the housing and coat the entire chamber making sure you get the proper lubrication whether or not your OMP pump is working or not. And it's mixed in a small enough ratio that you won't be over oiling your engine.

That's what I have concluded after a lot of reading and research on premixing and the stock oiling system.

Jethro Tull
02-25-2009, 11:26 AM
^ What bose said. Idemitsu is good stuff, formulated especially for rotaries.

I would emphasize that premixing is supposed to lessen long-term wear on every bearing surface exposed to the incoming fuel charge.

Personally I also noticed smoother startups after only one tankful. Better lubed seals mean better compression.

Don't use typical 2-stroke oils, with the blue dye. That dye is not compatible with our fuel filters and will clog them.

bose
02-25-2009, 01:35 PM
Much better for starting also because you don't have to worry about the oil that's being injected getting to full temp, cause you already have oil in the housing.

The other premix I hear is good is Pettite Racing's Protek-R, but I would bet it's Idemitsu in a different bottle. You can get it from Mazdatrix.com.

Jethro Tull
02-25-2009, 07:00 PM
Why don't we meet somewhere on Saturday for a "premix" get together? Bose and I can do an old-time medicine show, except instead of snake oil, we'll sell the crowd on Idemitsu.

I'll bring a few quarts.

Maybe dinner afterwards, at La Frontera maybe? It's a dive, but you can get a cold Tecate', and the smothered burritos are heavenly...:beerchug:

Tim Tim Tim

hey jethro would you really be willing to sell a quart for now? Also where do you get that from? 02-25-2009, 09:54 PM

Jethro Tull
02-25-2009, 11:01 PM
Yes I'll really sell a quart. I've got about 8 quarts of Idemitsu on-hand now, and just ordered another case. I get it from Mazdatrix, it's about $55 plus shipping. The shipping charges depend on how fast you want it. I usually just have it send UPS Ground and it takes about a week. I'll sell you a quart for $6, which is enough for 4 tankfuls of gas.

https://www.mazdatrix.com/q-supply.htm

The premix is the second item down from the top.

Jethro Tull

I didn't think La Frontera fixed any of their equipment!

The one in West Valley is closest to me; it's on 35th south, just west of Bangerter, on the north side of 35th. Afterwards, we could drive over to Granger Park on 36th west & 35th south, just north of Granger High. Lots of parking on the driving range there, accessed from the lot on 36th west.

If that's OK, we just need a day or time. Looks like either Saturday or Sunday should be dry and warm.
