View Full Version : Utah? Jethro Tull 03-31-2011, 10:02 AM I've been meaning to ask you if you've cancelled many Japan vacations lately? Roidz 04-01-2011, 09:16 AM I don't book many Japan trips. But I've had a few people cancel their Hawaii trips because of the tsunami even though there isn't anything to worry about in Hawaii. Roidz 04-01-2011, 09:17 AM Roidz, you are dead to me. (J/K!) Ouch Jethro, haha. Looks like you all had a pretty good showing for the cruise though. TacoMan 04-25-2011, 01:54 PM that was in layton :[ i should of went haha Roidz 04-26-2011, 09:14 AM What was in Layton? Jethro Tull 04-26-2011, 01:03 PM The March cruise was out by Grantsville and Miller, not Layton. It's been about a year since we cruised up north, prolly time for another northern outing real soon. The April meet was a bbq, had a decent turnout for a day that started rainy but cleared before we ate. No cruise. I haven't scheduled a May event since we usually count the Vegas meet as our event for that month, but since there seems to be only 2 cars from Utah going to Vegas, maybe those of you staying behind could organize something. Otherwise, the next slcRX8 event will be in June. I really wanted to make it to Vegas this year, but I'm building a house right now, so I'm tryin not to spend money, and you can't go to Vegas and not spend money. :[ i feel like a loner out here up north Where you at? Jethro Tull 06-07-2011, 08:47 AM On May 31, slcrx8.com ceased to exist as a website and now is on Facebook only. We folded the website into slcrotary.com, so now the 7 and 8 owners are all in one club. Ink Goddess is in charge of the Facebook page. I no longer have any leadership role in the Salt Lake club. slcrotary does not have elected offices. There is a BBQ and possible cruise scheduled for June 18th. Check the slcrotary.com website for details. If you like 7's of all types, this is a good chance to see several in one setting, as well as 8's. Roidz 06-07-2011, 11:51 PM Sad to hear, but sounds like a good opportunity as well. Hope all is good JT. Roidz 06-18-2011, 05:10 PM Our Utah thread is starting to die. What's new Utah 8 owners? Jethro Tull 06-20-2011, 10:55 AM Well, you missed the BBQ with SLCrotary on Saturday. About 5 8's and at least 4 FD 7's. Hondas.............. need i say more. Jethro Tull 06-30-2011, 07:33 AM Tuesday morning, about 5:45 AM, near the Valley Fair Mall. VR. Anyone? Every afternoon going north on I-215, red VR with a blonde female driver, about 4:15 PM. Anyone? Jethro Tull 07-28-2011, 09:25 AM Well, it's that time of year again, when car club activities take a back seat to other summer fun, especially if you have a family. We couldn't pull a cruise together this month, and not a lot of people can attend anything next month either, apparently. I won't have any free time until September at the soonest. Only 4 months (give or take) until my 8 goes back in the garage for winter. :crying: rgarcia9 07-28-2011, 11:24 AM Damn, I would totally be down for a cruise anytime :dunno: Off-Topic: I spotted my twin Velocity Red RX-8:mdrmed: He was on I-15 Southbound on Tuesday Morning at around 9:00. He had strakes and license plate cover was the chrome RX-8 one. Anyone know who this is? We drove side by side and right behind each other for a good 5-10 miles or so. In a way it was kind of a spur of the moment cruise haha. Pretty awesome to see all of the glances we got...EVEN during rush hour :smoker: Jethro Tull 07-31-2011, 03:18 PM Damn, I would totally be down for a cruise anytime :dunno: Pretty awesome to see all of the glances we got...EVEN during rush hour :smoker: Take heart, there is rumor of an August cruise being planned for the late afternoon of August 14th. A canyon cruise, so lots of twisties and cool air at the top. You should see the glances when there's eight of us! There is also an overnight camping trip that some members are trying to pull together for sometime in August, as well. no_pistons21 08-01-2011, 12:00 PM where would the cruise be held? Anyone know if it would be a good idea to leave the rx parked in a garage over winter without a rebuild, just heard some rumors that if you do that, you will have to do a rebuild if its not started at all? bose 08-01-2011, 01:51 PM It's not a good idea to just let it sit and not be started up, it's not guaranteed to need a rebuild but it's better to just start it once and a while. If not your battery will die for one, drying up seals is another possible probem problem. Just needs to be started up and warmed up once a week and it will be fine. Ink Goddess 08-01-2011, 03:24 PM August Cruise!!!! I also posted this on the rotary club web site, but I want to plan a cruise on either the 14th or the 21st of August. I really want to go to Trappers Loop in Morgan Canyon and give our friends up North a chance to be closer to our activities! I am thinking about meeting up in SLC area, driving out together as a group, meeting in Layton area for our peeps up North to join us, and then head through Morgan Canyon together. All 7's and 8's are welcome to join! There is a small place called the Oaks that will be on the other side of Trappers Loop that has great food an ice cream with a riverside location just perfect to chill and relax afterwards... Input is greatly appreciated! no_pistons21 08-01-2011, 06:51 PM Thanks for the information bose it is much appreciated, and ink i have no clue where those places are except for layton and slc obvioulsy cause i am up north, i have a friend who has an 8 as well who will definately be down for a cruise, me and him are prob the only 8s up here who have anything done to our vehicles. Ink Goddess 08-01-2011, 08:10 PM @ No pistons... I wouldn't doubt that lol! I am originally from Weber/Davis County and I stand out like a sore thumb with my mods when I am home. I am really aiming toward the 21st, does that work for your guys?? no_pistons21 08-01-2011, 11:07 PM Yeah i understand that, that time would work for me, i dont know about anyone else, i have two jobs which makes it kind of hard to plan stuff but i make it work. what mods do you have on your 8? I think the main reason for me sticking out is due to the converted single tip exhaust, not dueled out like most and boy is it loud and obnoxious, especially with the backfire. =) Roidz 08-02-2011, 01:03 AM I would be down for a cruise through Morgan canyon. Were you thinking Morgan canyon over old snowbasin and down Ogden canyon? Old snowbasin is currently closed, at least it was last Thursday. Jethro Tull 08-02-2011, 08:24 AM Anyone know if it would be a good idea to leave the rx parked in a garage over winter without a rebuild, just heard some rumors that if you do that, you will have to do a rebuild if its not started at all? Bose is right, don't just let it sit. It's not like a piston engined car as far as winter storage. This will be the fifth winter that I've garaged my car. It doesn't see the road from the end of November until about the first of March. I warm it up every week to ten days during that time, get it up to operating temperature, even run it up and down my 100-foot-long driveway a few times just to limber-up the drivetrain and suspension a bit. Then she goes back on the carpet in the garage until the next warm-up session. I also add Sta-bil to the gas and keep it topped-off so condensation doesn't form inside the gas tank. Ink Goddess 08-03-2011, 12:40 AM I love my back fire, too lol!! Hey Roidz, That is the I believe the exact route I would like to follow =) It is official, this will take place on the 21st, so I will arrange a meeting location for both SLC and Layton and times for everyone to meet up. I will be moving back to Davis County around November time, so I'll be around for the remainder of the cruising season. Ok in other news, since a lot of people didn't go on the cruise, I vote to have a dinner night. I know money can be tight, but some options are Olive Garden has their never ending pasta bowl special going on right now, and Texas Roadhouse offers dinners starting at 7.99 before 6 pm during the week (not sure about the weekend). So lets rack our schedules together and do a dinner night as a group! Dinner is always cheaper than a full tank of gas... Well, for some of us lol! Did you keep your 8 Ink Goddess? Hope to see you in May at WHiV5. Ink Goddess 10-31-2011, 09:10 PM Yep, I still have my 8. I am just going to get a 2nd vehicle and keep my 8 for now =) atwood_101 11-01-2011, 12:32 AM Glad you decided to keep it! I think your 8 is pretty freakin sweet lol. Phil's 8 11-01-2011, 07:21 AM All 8s are sweet and 8s driven by pretty girls are sweeter. Roidz 11-01-2011, 09:04 AM Good idea Ink. I went the same route. What kind of dd are you looking for? Ink Goddess 11-01-2011, 03:50 PM All 8s are sweet and 8s driven by pretty girls are sweeter. Thanks for makin me blush Phil lol! I am looking at a few different cars at the moment for a winter alternative. I'll know what I am getting when the time is right I guess lol atwood_101 11-01-2011, 04:23 PM Girls that drive rx8's FTW!! no_pistons21 11-05-2011, 05:40 PM I seen your car the other day ink, i was down in the slc area i want that spoiler you have. :) BTW first day of snow awesome drifting weather lol . Ink Goddess 11-06-2011, 01:30 AM Girls that drive rx8's FTW!! Hey now, that better have a positive meaning behind it lol! Hey NP, I guess it's hard to miss my car with how freaking LOUD she is lol! My spoiler is a total blind spot, but it's pretty so I have not taken it off lol atwood_101 11-06-2011, 10:34 AM Of course it has a positive meaning behind it! It would be awesome if the next girl i dated had an 8! Ink Goddess 11-07-2011, 06:58 PM Well when you find that girl, she can buy mine from me lol atwood_101 11-07-2011, 07:07 PM I don't want her 8 to look better than my 8 :uhh: lol. Ink Goddess 11-08-2011, 06:51 PM Oh darn, guess you'll have to buy mine and she can buy yours lol!!! atwood_101 11-09-2011, 12:00 AM Thats more like it! :) Roidz 11-25-2011, 12:35 PM What's up fellow Utahs? How many of you have stored your 8's for the winter? atwood_101 11-25-2011, 12:57 PM What up Roidz?! I wish i could've stored my 8 for winter, but its my DD :( You store yours? Roidz 11-25-2011, 01:58 PM What up man? Yeah, mine's stored for the winter. I miss driving it already. All the salt on the road scares me tho. atwood_101 11-25-2011, 02:30 PM Yeah all the salt scares me too. Luckily i have an unlimited car wash pass at a local car wash, so whenever i get salt on her i can wash it right off. Hows the new Sonata treatin ya? Roidz 11-26-2011, 10:31 AM It's good man, thanks. Nothing like the 8 but the gas mileage is great, comfortable ride and super quiet inside. Wow I just rhymed a lot. atwood_101 11-26-2011, 08:57 PM You're a poet, and didn't even know it ;) That's good to hear though! Gas mileage would be nice... I do a lot of city driving and so far for winter im averaging 14.5-15 mpgs.. Mothai 12-15-2011, 05:33 PM Is anyone going to the Vegas meet in may? Haven't really seen very many responses on the slcrotary page. I'm going for sure! Hope more SLC ppl join too.. Ink Goddess 01-03-2012, 11:51 PM I know this is off topic, but I just wanted to let everyone know that my baby girl arrived Christmas morning, weighing in at 5 lbs 12 oz, 20 inches long. My 8 is in new hands, but thankfully those hands belong to one of my best friends that told me I can come take her anytime I'd like. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Roidz 01-04-2012, 09:07 AM Congrats on the baby! Best of luck and good health to both of you. Roidz 01-04-2012, 09:08 AM Is anyone going to the Vegas meet in may? Haven't really seen very many responses on the slcrotary page. I'm going for sure! Hope more SLC ppl join too.. Ehh i probably wont be going... I'm only 19 and don't really drink or anything. I was talking to some people at Sevenstock about it and they said it gets pretty crazy. But im still undecided. Roidz 01-09-2012, 09:59 AM Anyone know a good body shop and/or good mech shop in SLC? Not sure about the Salt Lake area, but Alpine is a really good body shop in Ogden. atwood_101 01-09-2012, 10:19 PM Not to thread jack or anything, but i currently have my rx8 for sale :( I didn't think this day would come, but i decided that college is more important and can't afford the payments, insurance and gas. So if you know someone that is looking for a well kept rx8 hit me up! I'm going to go for sure, I have a friend that lives there.. Atwood- sorry to hear dude! Come work at Verizon, they pay 8k in tuition and books. :) Jethro Tull 01-10-2012, 01:40 PM i currently have my rx8 for sale Another one bites the dust! As far as Vegas goes, there really isn't too many people that are even remotely thinking about going.. I'm going to go for sure, I have a friend that lives there.. I went to the Vegas meet in '10 and had a blast. Highly recommended. My brother lives there so I always visit him and my neice when in town. The bad news is, it's looking like a killer work schedule shaping-up this spring. We take our vacations between contracts, whenever that happens, so it's impossible to plan ahead. Right now I'm thinking that we won't be going this year. With the death of the local 8 club, we don't have even close to the social scene we used to have. Too many people sold their 8's and moved-on. :( We dropped below the "critical mass". bose 01-10-2012, 02:32 PM For a body shop I go to unique auto body, for anything I can't do to my car I just go to the dealer. I might be going to Vegas, we'll see how much money I have around that time, will be a last minute decision. atwood_101 01-10-2012, 04:35 PM As far as Vegas goes, there really isn't too many people that are even remotely thinking about going.. That would be so nice!! bose 01-10-2012, 05:19 PM Ebay is hiring as well and I hear they do tuition reimburstment. Jethro Tull 01-10-2012, 06:45 PM My employer does 100% tuition reimbursement (if it's something related to the company) and mileage. They paid for my Solidworks 3D design certificate a couple of years ago (2 semesters). Unfortunately, we aren't hiring at the moment. Just remember that if you work, you gotta go to school at hours that don't conflict with your work schedule. Some employers are pretty good about flexible hours, some aren't. You may not get work hours that allow you to take the classes you are interested-in. It can be a double-edged sword. Mothai 01-10-2012, 11:29 PM No way?!?! That would be so nice!! It is pretty nice, it pays almost 2 full semesters at the U, not including books of course, I hope to be done by this fall.. :s It took me a min to really get back into school full time tho after I started this job, it's like pulling teeth to try and get part time. My job is hella flexible, this semester I have a couple 10.5 hr days, then a couple half days.. it seems to work so far.. JT!! Congrats are in order for you too! Kelly is an awesome lady! :) Leejin 01-18-2012, 11:29 AM What's up fellow Utahs? How many of you have stored your 8's for the winter? St.George checking in. No need to store my car down here. I park in a garage, and I don't think roads have ever been dangerous to drive on down here. Whenever it rains, I get a biiiiiig smile on my face though. I turn off my DSC and have a godamn hay day. Jethro Tull 01-18-2012, 08:41 PM Mine's tucked away on her carpet in the garage, just like every winter. No driving until the salt gets washed off the roads in spring. I warm her up every week to ten days, run her up and down the driveway to lube all the moving parts. I keep a float charger on the battery so she cranks up strong even after ten days in the cold garage. Since my 8 is just a weekend fun car anyway, it's no big deal. Sometimes she doesn't get driven in summer for a week or two at a time, if I'm working a lot. I've had her 5 years now, and only have 27,000 miles on her. Thanks for the congrats, Mothai! She is totally awesome! :) bose 01-18-2012, 09:09 PM Mine's tucked away on her carpet in the garage, just like every winter. No driving until the salt gets washed off the roads in spring. I warm her up every week to ten days, run her up and down the driveway to lube all the moving parts. I keep a float charger on the battery so she cranks up strong even after ten days in the cold garage. I don't drive mine at all if the roads are wet at all, but I have taken her on a couple of quick spins, but do start her every Saturday. Put a clump of steel wool in the exhaust while I'm not driving her. Change the oil before storage and fill the gas to the top to try and limit the amount of water it will accumulate. Having a beater is the best ever, in the last year and eight months I have only put 5,000 miles on her. And it gives me plenty of time to do mods. How is everyone, it's been a long time! Jethro Tull 01-20-2012, 10:10 AM ^Keeping the gas topped-off to prevent condensation is a good idea, I do that too. I keep a 5 gallon can of premium in the garage, with a good dose of Sta-bil added, for that purpose, although 3-4 months isn't really long enough for gas to degrade if you keep the caps on tight. Is the steel wool to keep rodents out? I usually stuff a piece of foam rubber in there, but I have to wait for the exhaust to cool. I guess a determined mouse could pull that out though. Been doing good! How have you been? Jethro Tull 01-20-2012, 10:14 AM Last week I discovered that I'm listed in the Internet Movie Database for work I did over 30 years ago. Kind of a hoot to stumble on that! http://www.imdb.com/ Of course, you'd have to know my real name to find me, lol. Jethro Tull 01-27-2012, 04:58 PM It's a beautiful sunny day. Roads are dry, salt-free thanks to the rain of yesterday. I'm going to take her out for a warm-up run, and get my brain re-centered. Roidz 01-28-2012, 09:52 AM I wanted to get mine out too, but I need new tires first. I'll be getting new tires come spring!! Jethro Tull 01-28-2012, 10:51 PM I wanted to get mine out too, but I need new tires first. I'll be getting new tires come spring!! I took mine out this morning for an hour and OMG it felt sofa king good! She ran like a champ. The 8 LOVES cold air, she runs so much better than in summer when it's sweltering hot! I bought 60K Yokohamas a year and a half ago and have only put 2K on them so-far. Love 'em. Look into the Yoko's when you get around to buying, Roidz! They are so much better handling than the stock Dunlops I used to run. A bit more pricey than other tires, but SOOOO worth it! Roidz 01-30-2012, 10:00 AM Thanks JT! I'll definitely give those tires a look come spring time. Where do you recommend I get them? Jethro Tull 01-30-2012, 12:40 PM Thanks JT! I'll definitely give those tires a look come spring time. Where do you recommend I get them? Tire Rack beat everyone's price by about $50 apiece at the time. I bought them at the same time as my ASA-AR1 rims and sprang for new TPMS while I was at it. If you order rims and tires from Tire rack, they come pre-mounted and balanced and all you have to do is put them on the car yourself. Otherwise a local shop will charge you. Roidz 02-01-2012, 10:13 AM I hope I'm just missing it, but I'm not seeing them on tirerack's website. Jethro Tull 02-01-2012, 09:10 PM I hope I'm just missing it, but I'm not seeing them on tirerack's website. I bought mine in June of '10, so the same tire might not be available now. Since then I've only driven my 8 about 2,000 miles. Divorce didn't leave me much money for gas last year, lol. I'll check the Tire Rack website this weekend when I get some time. For all I know, they don't even carry Yokohamas anymore. Jethro Tull 02-02-2012, 08:59 PM Hey Roidz, it occured to me that maybe you were looking up ASA AR1's in the tire section. Those are my rims. I'll have to go look at them to remember the exact name and style, but the tires are 60K Yokohamas. They were about $200 each at the time, IIRC. Roidz 02-03-2012, 09:07 AM I was looking for 60k Yokohamas and it populated a list of Yokohamas, but I wasn't seeing the 60k's. Maybe they changed the name or possibly discontinued them. I'll double check though. I'm also looking at the BF Goodrich T/A KDW 2's. I had them on my CtsV and they were a really good tire. I've also been thinking about getting some new wheels and coilovers depending on my tax return. So I need to first decide on that so I know what size tires to get. Decisions...decisions Nick 02-16-2012, 09:21 PM Hey everyone, just got my 3rd engine at 95k miles, so I am looking to change up how I take care of it :( Does everyone in Utah agree with the general consensus that we should be using 5w-30? Any special instructions for the hot/cold weather here? Jethro Tull 02-18-2012, 07:16 AM Hey Nick! I've used Idemitsu premix from day one. Lots of folks feel that's about the best thing you can do to treat the engine seals right. When she's cold, let her warm up before revving. I garage mine in winter so she's never been through snow. I just warm her up every week to ten days to keep the engine internals lubed, and keep a float charger on the battery. The 5w-30 is a good idea, but be careful because if Mazda finds out, it will void your warranty, if you are still covered. If not, no problem. I have one more year of bumper-to-bumper warranty left, then it's just 3 more years on the 8/100k engine core warranty. Just keep your eyes open for the average, terrible Utah driver, especially when it snows. They all forget how to drive as soon as the roads turn white. bose 02-18-2012, 09:27 AM I would also recommend that in this cold weather, when you get to your destination let it idle for a bit and get warmer, the oil cooler in our cars work very well, when driving around you can get the oil pretty cold. And premix like JT said is great piece of mind. Nick 02-23-2012, 11:54 AM Have any of you been reading this thread? http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=229407 It's full of confusing and contradicting viewpoints about what causes engine failures, but it's good reading. But really, it has me more worried than ever. I'm especially worried about my catalytic converter -- any way to know if I have a clogged cat if it drives just fine? I do have this funny oil/fuel/exhaust smell in the cabin for the last month that I can't get to go away. The dealer keeps saying it goes away every time they've done something (such as replace a leaking switch in the transmission), but it hasn't. bose 02-23-2012, 01:06 PM I did just read it, really worrying isn't going to help. The only way to check a cat is to unbolt it and take a peek, but if it is clogged it wouldn't be driving or acting fine. I use 5w30 in my car, cause I don't think 5w20 is robust enough to handle our little heater. I may go to 5w40 or 10w40 cause my car isn't driven in cold months. I have my own theories on engine failures as well, but I won't go into it. The oil smell could likely be coming from the shifter, if you can pull up the console peice and look under the shift boot the rubber seal/collar may have moved up. Thats what it was on mine. Nick 02-27-2012, 03:46 PM Thanks for the help Bose. I will check that out. I went back and looked at my service history for my original RX-8, a 2004 Automatic. I first took it in because of a "funny noise" (according to the service tech's notes) and lack of power at 12k miles. It's hard to imagine anything I could have done could have prevented that one in only 12k miles. My best guess is that the most important thing I need to do is keep it topped up with good oil, but the list of things I haven't done in the past is long: Didn't premix Didn't use anything other than 5W-20 Didn't decarb once per year Didn't proactively replace plugs or ignition coils (I've heard 20k miles on those, I went much longer) Didn't use "top tier" gas So, this time around, I'll be doing all of those except maybe premixing, unless I can get a good idea that it really helps. I'd be happy to hear any theories that could educate me better. Jethro Tull 03-11-2012, 05:12 PM The weight of your oil won't have any effect on engine seals. Viscosity is much more important for things like gears and shafts, and those never seem to fail, or rarely, at least. The whole 5w-20 myth of being "too light" is just that, a myth when it comes to apex and side seal longevity. De-carbing is also only needed if you drive like a granny and build it up in the first place. Redline it every driving session and you won't have a carbon build-up problem. Actually premixing is the BEST thing you can do, IMO. Keeping the plugs and coils up is secondary. Roidz 03-12-2012, 09:16 AM I ordered my new tires over the weekend so my 8 will be coming out to play soon!
