I cheated and drove the 8 yesterday before the rain started falling. It renewed my soul and restored my faith that spring will soon be here.

Mazdatrix has a selection of wires and also have the coils for a good price. http://www.mazdatrix.com/8ignition.htm

BHR has the plugs for the best price, $80 for the set here: http://blackhaloracing.com/products-page/engine/ignition/ They also have a total ignition solution which is pretty pricey, but I love mine. If you have any questions I'll answer them as best as I can if not the owner of BHR would gladly talk to you, he's a really good guy.

Those are just a couple of places. If you search more you may be able to find better deals.

Amazon is a lot cheaper than anywhere else I've seen. $29.00 for the coils (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0033D5ONY/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=A1ATZ3MAARQNEF&v=glance).

Less than $70 for the set of 4 Spark Plugs (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000AUP2VW/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance) too.

That's a great tip, Leejin, thanks!

I find myself buying more and more stuff either from or through Amazon. I'm impressed.

bose
01-28-2010, 04:20 PM
Nice, I didn't even think about amazon, they have great prices on everything. I even got my school books through amazon, paid $55 for a $230 book.

I'll have to get my plugs through them. I have the BHR ignition, so I use the GM Yukon coils.

I bought my wife a toy on Amazon. Not that it did any good...

Leejin
01-31-2010, 02:23 PM
Wow JT.. TMI.. haha.

So, just so I'm clear and I don't order the wrong set, it's 2 of the NGK RE9BT (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000AUP2VW/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance) and 2 of the NGK RE7CL (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000GZEU64/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance)? It's confusing because Amazon has 2 different pictures on the site for the RE7CL.

This is my first change (30k Service). I'm changing all the plugs, wires, and trans & diff fluids. I gotta wait for another paycheck to change the coils.. They's espensive..

Also, any ideas on what else to do at 30k? I want to avoid the $#!tty dealerships around here and do as much of this by myself.

Jethro Tull
02-01-2010, 11:52 AM
Never go by the pictures, half the time they are outdated. And I'm at the office now so can't look up the plugs for you, sorry!

I got mine out of hibernation and drove it to work today to celebrate Groundhog Day, lol.

I was going to drive it yesterday but woke up to a dusting of snow on the road. Not a good thing with my summer tires.

But today it's perfect and I'm taking the long way home. :)

Cobb moved all of their tuning resources to Austin about a month ago, maybe a little more. They are keeping an office here for R&D, and the owner of Cobb has another business in North Salt Lake. So for now word is they are staying in Utah, just not in the same capacity i.e. no more dyno tuning.

Yeah man i've had mine on for about 3 weeks. You can DEFINITLY tell a difference. for some reason my reverse has started sticking this past week. About 1/3 of the time I try to stick it in reverse it either won't budge into gear at all or it goes half way in and i hear a ZzzZzZz of my gears trying to change. After the ZzzZzzZ sound i take it out of gear then put it back in and it works perfectly. Oh and I noticed if it won't go in at all if i roll back in Neutral like half a foot then it goes in fine. is my gear not lining up? I'm positive the install was perfect and it worked fine the first 2 weeks or so... i'm a post this on the Forum also.

Well, mine's only been in for two days, and since my 8 isn't my daily driver, it's not getting much road time. But so-far it works perfectly. Seemed a bit stiff at first but it's getting smoother every time I use it.

I did compare the machining to my stock shifter when I had them both in my hand and the AF shifter seemed to be well-matched to the stock unit.

You may want to check that none of the bolts that hold the retaining plate in place have come loose. I'd pull it and examine it closely, if I were in your position.

I will probably do the Hilton or Excalibur or Luxor. They have good rooms at a pretty low price. Mazda Maniac reccomends the Hilton which is close to the In and Out meeting spot, and it's easy to get to the action they have the tran right there. Phil also said The Orleans is good and clean and is near the cart track.

It depends on your budget really but the Hilton and Excalibur are only like 75 per night.

I'm thinking I might take the Subie after all. There's no way 3 of us can cram all our luggage (especially the girls) and ourselves into the 8. We're going down for at least 3 days, to visit my brother and niece, so the girls can't get by with ONE suitcase.

There are events taking place all over the town so staying close to everything is a little hard to do..........The meeting place is on Sahara West.........the GoCarts are West of the Strip, The drive is West to the strip, The traditional Saturday beer hall meet is east of the strip (but close)

I called the Hilton and as of 3/24 they had $59.00 room. I will contact a few joints today and see what they offer.

Need the advice of our Utah RX8 buddies. A couple of weeks ago my wife's 2004 RX8 AT powered down while driving on I15. Motor simply stopped. Electrical system was functional. She pulled over and we had it towed to Orem Mazda. They checked it out and found that 1) it was 4 quarts low on oil! 2)30% low compression on rotor #2. There had been no oil pressure warning. They said she needed a new motor but that she would have to provide oil service receipts to qualify. She could not find her jiffy lube receipts so they said they would not cover a new motor ($7K for a Mazda rebuilt) They refilled the oil and it started and she's driving it around now (with the weak rotor). She's not a performance driver so any power loss is not an issue to her.

What are your suggestions for bringing rotor 2 up to 100% compression, finding a less expensive replacement motor, or other thoughts? (besides checking oil on every gas fillup ;-)

Jethro Tull
04-11-2010, 05:02 PM
I've still got 3 years to go on a 6-year extended warranty, so I'd let Mazda handle issues like that. You should come to a meet and talk to the guys in the club who are do-it-yourselfers. I'm sure you'd get plenty of advice.

Next meet: Next Saturday. We are cruising out to Wendover and staying overnight. Party!

Make your hotel reservations soon. Most of us are staying at Montego Bay hotel/casino.

Jiffy Lube keeps your records on the computer for 5 years.....Just go to them and get a print-out. Mazda will accept the print out - happened here in vegas also.

Phil, if I make it down, I won't have the use of a car at all. Mrs. Tull and the kid will be off seeing the sites in the Subie.

If that is the case, 05TiGr8Lady has allowed me to ride with her. She knows I'm harmless. Mostly.

Things can always change, but last time I checked, that was the plan.

I'm still trying to talk the girls into packing ONE suitcase each. IF they can manage that, we can bring the 8. Hell, all I'm bringing is whatever fits in my duffel bag, a couple bottles of Idemitsu, and one bottle of motor oil.

That damn spare sure eats up the trunk space, doesn't it? :wallbash:

Nancy and I can make it for 5 days on what we can pack into two each 28" suit cases and both will fit into my trunk along with two ditty bags and a lap top. I considered removing the dam spare cuz it's almost useless anyway. My trunk consists of AEM meth injection system, one small tool bag, Mazda tire repair kit, emergency road kit, Mazda vehicle book, 2 quarts of idemitsu along with six 4oz bottles, one quart of Royal purple motor oil, one quart of Royal Purple 2 cycle motor oil, one quart of Royal Purple trans fluid, one gallon of distilled water and one spare tire.

I doubt you could get luggage in there for two women plus yourself, however.

I won't have to pack the AT fluid, at least.

I'm actually still not sure about the time-off. It's the one aspect I have zero control over, other than quitting my job if I can't get those days, which of course isn't going to happen.

NOTICE: If you are listed on the attendees list, please post if you will have a passenger for the event or if two of the listed attendees intend to drive together (name would be nice but not mandatory). We are now up to the 60s in attendees and would like to figure the actual count of vehicles and peeps. If for any reason you do not sure of having a passenger, that's OK just let me know that it's a MAYBE.

A prominate forum vendor is going to kick in some freebies to all that attend. I am not yet sure what they will be but any freebie gift is going to be kind of them.

Vegas 8's and Sin City Rotary will be offering a T shirt/beer mug combination remembrance for sale at the meet. Try and save $20.00 to purchase one of the remembrance combinations. The shirts are being printed as I post this. The beer mugs are complete and ready. A preliminary printing pic of the Ts is some where else with in this post. In short the T will have a printing of the advertising pic and the mugs will have a print of a design made up by the designer of the main pic. I will post pics of them soon. The sets will be in limited amount of 60 sets and available on the Friday evening meet. There will be extra T shirts available beyond the first set limitation
To insure proper sizing available for each of you, a note stating your T shirts size would be nice. Right now there will be a limited amount of 3X, several 2X, several XL, few of the Large and a limited amount of medium for the ladies.

In addition some specialty vendors have donated some items for a raffle NGK donated some spark plugs for the 7s and 8s, Maguires is donating some car care products to be bundled for a raffle try, Black Halo Racing has donated a $250.00 gift certificate, there will be a limited few of the art work posters in the raffle, Pettit Racing has donated several items for both the 7s and the 8s. We are still in negotiations with several other specialty vendors for some additional raffle items.

LOL, a misunderstanding.

I got my clear corners on eBay from Japan for $59.

The eyelids I make will cost you $80 for an unpainted set. If I paint them, it depends on your color. Some Mazda paints are single-stage and a painted set will run you $150. Colors such as silver, TiGr, and BB are single-stage paint.

If it's a 2-stage paint, like VR, it will cost you $200 for a painted set. That's because the paint alone is $75 for a half pint!

What's your color code? It's on the sticker on the inside of your door. I'll check on a paint match.

If you want to have a favorite body shop paint and install them for you, that's OK too. They all charge a different rate. Mine come with a clear topcoat, and buffed to a high gloss. You won't get that at every bodyshop.

I think it was chunbelievable who is waiting on a VR set from me. Tell him that they well be done soon. I sold-out my first batch of VR's and he is next in line. I was one the "early adopters" of the VR eyelids from JT. Got them last week and installed them on Saturday. So here's a blow by blow.

Here are the eyelids as they arrived from JT. Well packed and lookin' great!

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP3994.jpg

Here's a view in the bright sunlight that we had on Saturday, as well as a look at the backside.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP3995.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP3997.jpg

This is the body molding tape for mounting that JT recommended. I got it at Autozone. It was a little more expensive there, but Autozone was closer than Walmart.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP4004.jpg

Determine the length of pieces to place on the back of the eyelids and cut them in half.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP4006.jpg

Then place the sticky side of the tape on the backside of the eyelids. Clean the area where the tape will be attached with alcohol to assure any residual oils are removed that may interfere with good adhesion of the tape. This pic shows my initial trial placement of the tape. The back of the eyelids have a plateau around the edge that then drops off to a slight cavity in the interior of the eyelid. I first placed the tape close to the edge of the eyelid on the plateau. However, when I positioned the eyelid for a trial fitment, the thickness of the tape seemed to raise the eyelid up too far from the rest of the bodywork. The end of the eyelid closest to the fender seemed to be exceptionally high. I also have the added problem of a VentureShield protective coating on by headlights that raises the eyelids even more, perhaps another 1/16". So, I repositioned the tape just inside the cavity at the edge of the plateau. That way the eyelid was raised minimally while still getting enough surface area to attach. This pic is of the original placement of the tape. I moved the tape as I described but forgot to take a pic after the repositioning. I also gave the tape a shot of hot air from a hair dryer and pressed the tape down again to maybe enhance the adhesion.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP4007.jpg

Next, be sure the headlight covers are clean. I did a three step process, as JT and 7andan8 suggested. Here is a pic of the headlight before I did any work on it. It was a very bright sunny day, so every blem shows up.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP3999.jpg

Step one was to clean the headlight with Meguiar's plastic cleaner.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP4001.jpg

Next I gave it a claybar treatment with Mequiar's claybar and Quick Detailer.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP4008.jpg

Finally, I cleaned the area with alcohol to be sure any residual oils were removed.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP4011.jpg

If you remove all of the protective plastic coating on the backside of the mounting tape, you will have to position the eyelid perfectly the first time. There would be no room for error. However, I remembered a technique from when I installed the rear aero flares which called for just pulling up a small tab, about 1 inch, of the protective tape from the backside of the end of each segment of the tape. Thus, when you position the eyelid, there is only a small segment of the tape that is sticky, which will attach the eyelid, but allow you to reposition the eyelid if necessary because only a small area will be sticking. This pic shows the eyelid in position with the tabs of the molding tape sticking out, hi-lighted by the arrows.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP4014.jpg

Once you are sure the eyelid is positioned perfectly, hold the eyelid in position and slowly pull the tape tabs out to the side to uncover the rest of the tape and press the eyelid down all around the edges. As I said, we had a bright sunny day, so the eyelids got a chance to "bake" in the sun to hopefully improve the adhesion of the tape to the eyelid and the headlight cover. I guess only time will tell if it worked. Anyway, here are a couple pics of the finished product.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP3985.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/glassetcher/RX-8%20Pix/Eyelids/IMGP3986.jpg

HEY JT i got 2 guys wanting WWP eyelids here in MO how much would it be per set painted?

Get me the paint code for WWP, from the door sticker. Sometimes the paint names in the book at the paint store aren't the same as the RX-8 names, so I have to go by the paint code number.

See my post above. I think WWP is 2-stage but I'm not sure. Painted 2-stage eyelids are $200 set from me. Single stage are $150, unpainted are $80.

It's a Base Coat/Clear Coat. Hence 2 stage.

Technically, 2-stage paints are termed "ground coat" and "mid coat", with the clear being a top coat and not part of the 2-stage color itself. If you count the clear, it's a 3-stage, but most paint sellers don't include the clear when talking about the color itself.

Hey everyone, new member here. I don't actually own the RX-8, it's for a friend of mine, I'm just doing some research.

He has been having issues with his '04 pretty much since he bought it. Long story short, the car had been through a lot more than the previous owner had led on and it's starting to come apart.

Transmission has been rebuilt twice in the last 9 months and has been having a lot of loss of power/no start or run issues the past month. This last week after dying on I-15 South in Farmington, he had it towed to Bountiful Mazda where the service guys determined that the motor was blown after they found it had no compression.

Selling or parting it out isn't an option because of the amount still owed on the loan, so I thought I would start looking around to see how difficult and feasible it would be to either rebuild the motor or find a used takeout replacement to get it running again.

Does anyone know any resources locally to find help with replacing the engine or finding replacement parts?

bose
08-11-2010, 05:31 PM
Is your friends RX8 over 100,000 miles? These engines have 8yr/100,000 mile warranty on them.

Why was the trans rebuilt originally, or the second time? Rebuilding should only be done by someone who is skilled in the area, not generally a good first project.

Just doing a swap would be much easier and is doable, finding it is the more difficult part. Start calling junkyards around the state and maybe even boardering state as some will ship the engine.

Another option, budget depending, is Mazmart. They sell rebuilt engines for 2700 ish.

Chewy1576
08-11-2010, 05:47 PM
I believe it is still under 60k miles BUT... and this is where the long story comes in... after the first time the transmission failed he took it to Freeway Mazda in Riverdale and tried to have it repaired under warranty. The dealer researched the VIN and discovered that the car had been totaled and repaired by one of the previous 4 owners so it had a branded title. No warranty coverage what-so-ever.

If I remember correctly, the first was something internally that wouldn't allow the transmission to go into gear. The second was something with the input shaft within weeks of the first repair. Freeway Mazda did the repairs both times.

I have been looking around online for used engines with low miles to swap out. There are a few on EBay and other sites, I just have to fill my friend in on what i'm finding and see what he wants to do. Bountiful Mazda advised that other components were toast and needed to be replaced as well, I just don't remember which ones.

bose
08-13-2010, 12:13 PM
Salvaged vehicles can be rough, I've have one or two. And sometimes you end up chasing little gremlins. It sounds like the dealer isn't the best at doing tranny work. I would keep looking around at ebay, and the junkyards too. That's the cheapest you'll find, hell maybe find one with the trans as well.

Chewy1576
08-13-2010, 12:20 PM
I have a few leads on some replacement short blocks and takeout motors, I just have to talk to him to see what he is planning to do with it. Looking through some of the How-To's by RotaryResurrection on removing the engine and tearing it down to a short block doesn't look too complicated and I think between me and some friends we can get it done.

I had the same problem, it ended up being the engine had low compression. If your under 100,000 miles the engine is still covered by warranty.

I'm in a good place mentally, however. Really, it's the best thing for both of us. She'll find her wings and her own happiness, as will I.

10" last night, and another 4" this morning. My 8 is garaged for winter, officially. The road salt and sand will not touch my car, ever.

It's the Explorer for the next 13 weeks or so!

Not nearly the fun that the 8 is, but then I'm not sweating bullets driving it in snow, wondering which of those fools is going to lose control and plow into me!

I can, but I won't.

I bought an '80 RX-7 BN in late '79. Driving it through one winter here started a terminal rust process and just pitted the nose something fierce.

I won't do that again. I can drive the Explorer for 12 or 13 weeks a year and not get my shorts twisted one bit.

If you wish to be a confirmed attendee to this event and receive free rememberances, you must preregister for the hotel room or purchase a T shirt prior to the day of the event. All those preregistering or becoming confirmed prior to the event will receive additional free items the day of the event, including the traditional beer mug. See page one post one for additional information, contact your area leader or just PM "Phil's 8"

For those rotary owners that do not wish to use the Orleans Hotel or do not wish to purchase a T, you are still WELCOME.

Be sure to let me know when you reserve your room so that I can add your name to the confirmed list. Those that buy Ts in advance will be added automatically. There is a cut off day on the room special rate so you may wish to register now!!!! If you have already registered let me know as it is not easy getting a list out of the Orleans.

Thank you kind sir. All money collected from the sale of Ts and raffle tickets is spent to reimburse for purchases, expenses and for the betterment of the event.

If you register for a room at Orleans then no, you do not need to buy a T in advance. If you are using other lodging then I would appreciate the purchase of the T in advance. Purchase of the T is not a prerequisite to attendance but it does help defray the costs for all the other little things that make this event happen every year. If we figure everyone who posts is coming then only half show up we are stuck with costs based upon the projected attendance. If you purchase the T in advance then the majority of those costs are covered. If you purchase a T shirt or use Orleans for your lodging then we can figure that you are really coming and can plan accordingly. We do not receive any income or kick backs on the Hotel rooms but if you register for a room then chances are you are really going to attend and then hopefully buy a T and/or raffle tickets. The Hotel rooms are for our convenience and are what makes Orleans want to have us at their Hotel so the more we get to stay there insures that we get discount rates next year and maybe more.

Thank you to those that are PMing me with their names for the list. Please include your real first name, the real fist name of your passenger and the rotary you are going to bring (RX8 or 1st Gen 7, etc).

You will have a good time
you may not remember it :beerchug:, but you will have a good time.

The little emergency-only spare on the yellow rim? How much? I have one, but someone in the club might have a need.

Sorry you sold your 8. On the other hand, the more used ones that get bought and wrecked by kids, the more mine is worth. ;)
