The oem appearance package only has the little rear skirts. The Mazdaspeed is a full one.

Not many 8 owners seem to know that there are a lot more Mazdaspeed parts available than just what's in that little brochure the dealers give you.

Check this out:

http://www.mazdaspeeddevelopment.com/index.php

There's a lot there, take your time to go over the whole site. Note the whole section on Renesis perfomance rebuild parts!

Megan reminds me of the Family Guy episode when they all make a fart sound when someone says "Meg" lol!

I think you should call her "Svetlana" :)

Have you noticed differences between this one and the black one?

rx8snowboard
06-03-2009, 06:11 PM
She was never in the road for long, thats not my house lol. I have noticed that this one shifts very smooth and seems a little tighter on the suspension for some reason but that may be because I have been driving a 09 maxima as my rental car... other than that I love the gt and all the stuff it brings to the car, the windows aren't tinted yet but with the auto dim mirror I can see why. The Bose speakers are nice to have although I don't listen to music much when I can listen to the rotary instead lol. leather gets hot but the heated seats will be nice in the winter I guess (unless you don't drive your 8 in the winter). TCS is the big thing I think I will like about this one, I heard it makes all the difference in bad conditions...

Good to see you last night, thanks for stopping by! The car is a definite improvement over the old one. White was my second choice for color if I couldn't find a silver one when I was ready to buy.
I need to trim-out the eyelids, not sure if I can get to it today (not in the shop tomorrow), but if not this weekend, next weekend for sure.
I'm also looking into getting some WWP paint (as well as some TiGr for Bryan) so if the black idea doesn't work, we'll just paint them.

It looks like an after market alarm or remote start light. They usually install a small light to show it is armed or ready to start. I had my remote start light built into the dash by the DCS switch but the installer wanted to do some dumb mount.

It does have a switch on the back of it and when I flip it the light stays solid instead of blinking :eyetwitch. It looks ghetto and I want to take it out if it does nothing but blink :uhh:

My driveway was the closest thing we've had to a meet in a long time, sadly...

I didn't have any time to work on eyelids last weekend...had to repair a 16-foot section of my back-yard fence. But I got it done, working in the rain at times, determined to finish it and not have it run into another weekend.

I'm going to by some WWP paint to try and sell a set of eyelids to Bry's dad so if the black doesn't float your boat, we can do them the factory color. Hopefully I'll get the paint next Friday if I don't have to work.

Stay tuned.

Hey JT, any news on the eyelids?

I have 3 sets now, all unpainted. I can only get to the paint store on Fridays and I've had to work the last 2 Fridays. Tomorrow isn't looking good, either. Summer is my busy season at work. They are closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

One of the unpainted ones is the black gelcoated set- but in my opinion, it still needs to be wet-sanded with 600 grit and polished before use- the gelcoat surface straight from the mold is unacceptable.

If you want to connect this weekend, we could set the black ones on your car and see how they look- but honestly, if it was me- I'd paint 'em with real automotive paint. Gelcoat will chalk with exposure to the elements.

I do ordinarily, but this guy swore "I'm definitely going to buy them!" so I made them at the same time as yours and snowboards. No big deal, they'll sell sooner or later.

There's a guy on eBay selling eyelids now, and he's using photos of KEI office eyelids but actually selling a prodcut that looks different. I wonder how many people will get suckered by that. His price is lower than mine, but the actual product he sells is not as rugged and doesn't look as good, IMO.

My favorite zoo activities:

Tossing catnip to the tigers just before feeding time (it works on the big cats, too).

Throwing my own feces at the chimps.

Toss a ripped-up denim jacket, an old toupee, and one sneaker into the bear compound, then report that someone jumped in there.

Feed a giraffe and when he bends his head down to get the treat, stick a cone party hat on him with a rubber band.

Slip a whole salmon to the penguins and watch the free-for-all.

I got em uploaded to the computer yesterday, when I get home from work today I'll try and get some posted.

A good turnout, a good cruise. We had 9 8's this time, broke our old record of 8. And a Ford Bronco bringing up the rear!

Lot's of slow traffic along the route made the trip up not as fun as it could have been, but the trip back to town made up for it.

Snowboard's new name is "Killa", lol!

You're in 2. Look at the shot of snowboard with his mouth hanging open. You're in the background.

I've got lots more, just need the time to get them processed and uploaded.

Remember that camera I was using? It has a neat function that allows me to grab single frames from video footage. So even though I shot only a few minutes of video, I have literally thousands of still frames to choose from. I'm pretty sure everybody is on there more than once.

haha no, I mean when we pulled up next to you on the bike. You looked confused.

annnnyway.... went to pick up my 8 today after its heart transplant. When I left the lot though it stalled everytime i came to a stop. SO i took it back and they're giving me a rental car cause it was late in the day and they didnt have the time to fix it. Lame yes, but get this. When I asked him what I could do to prevent it from happening again he said i need to drive harder. That its better for our engines to be in higher revs and to be driven hard. Also, when I asked if I had a break in period he said no. He said drive to just drive it hard and have fun. Sounds odd to me... Although I do generally drive in high gears to save gas and my engine DID start losing compression at about 38k....soooo I dunno, maybe he's right?. I have my fun with it but I do think I tend to baby it during day-to-day driving more than most people. Except Jethro ofcourse:hahano:. What do you guys think?

rx8snowboard
08-06-2009, 04:19 PM
just don't baby it too much and see how it "feels". I don't usually shift before 3500rpm and I don't take it over 7000rpm unless its a good race lol. I personally think you need to take it up hard once a week just to "flex" the engine and let it know you still love the fact that it has a 9000rpm redline :-) but thats just me... I like the idemitsu gas premix, makes me feel like I have a seatbelt on my seals lol. And just so you know I get 19-22 miles per galon on my new 8 and thats what I got on my black one when I had it too.

mr.fuas
08-06-2009, 08:17 PM
Ive always heard that you should red-line it atleast once a day and I love to do it. Thats actually one of the reasons I bought the car because I can do it every day and not feel bad about it. Although I have only had it for 4 months; I have yet to have any problems.

Jethro Tull

I have read that the engine could actually be revved to near 13,000 RPM, but the transmission and other driveline components couldn't handle rotational speeds that high.

What's the update on the car, Darius?

My Explorer is in the shop now so I've been driving the 8 daily. Nice change of pace!

Your car should NOT be stalling out. BN 8's don't act like that, neither should a rebuild.

Periodic redlining is a tactic used to prevent carbon build-up on the rotor and trochoid housing walls, from my understanding.

Phil's 8

I have read that the engine could actually be revved to near 13,000 RPM, but the transmission and other driveline components couldn't handle rotational speeds that high.
Well your right - the water pump is only good for 10,000 RPM as is the alternator (sustained) (Short shots of 10,000 RPM should no hurt them)- they would go before the tranny. My red line is 10,000 RPM but I don't recommend it as it puts you in the area of failure for auxiliary equipment. Not sure about the MT tranny but my AT does complain after 8700 RPM (will not shift until I return to 8700 RPM) but does not quit. Yes do red line every day to get rid of the carbon.

haha weeeeeee! Shes doing just fine now, Ive already got 400 miles on the new engine, Its definitely got more power than it did. Seems torquier. Im tempted to drive back down to Long Beach just to see how much the see level air affects the NEW engine since it made my old one feel like I was in a porsche. But yeah I had two seperate guys at mazda tell me there is no break in period. Weeeeeird. I've been relatively nice to it though. I should probably start premixing too...sigh. It's not really a noticeable thing, but a protection thing. Although the other day I had to get gas and had no premix with me, so I filled up and went home to get some, and it seriously felt like it was running a lot rougher. Might have been all in my head but I would rather pay the little bit extra and have the piece of mind.

Most likely in your head but using premix is a good thing and you should double up for the first 1000 miles after a rebuild. The Mazda guys that said no break in should be told to read their own mannual. I would assume that DD is close to stock so it will not be as important but for the first 1000 miles your supposed to stay well below redline. You only have to rev a rotary to 4 grand to rid it of carbon.

Do not use octane booster in a n/a 8 - not a good idea. Usual items that cause your idle problem:
1. Dirty Plugs
2. Bad Coils
3. Clogged Cat
4. Loss of engine compression.
I assume that you are n/a? You did not say if you have a Cobb AP? Dirty plugs are easy to check, coils can be checked with a timing light, see DIY section of this Forum for way to check cat and finally if you know someone with a compression checker (I think someone from SLC bought one recently) work a deal with them to check it. Wild guess says plugs or coils as they are the most common.

Yea Bose is correct - add motor mounts to that list as #5.

bose
08-14-2009, 11:19 AM
Another possibility could be the motor mounts, but octane booster is a waste of money. What we are talking about is premix. The rotary engine injects motor oil into the combustion chamber to lubricate the seals, we are adding some clean burning two stroke oil into our gas to makes sure it's getting the lubrication it needs.

Hey everybody, I know I haven't posted in a long time :( I am stil around but Anigma is not :( Some jerk cut me off while I was doing 45, he was about 15 feet away, must not have seen the poor little baby, pulled out right in front of me and put on his breaks. I slammed into the side of his truck, blacked out, we both ran into a house, then I came to and they rushed me to the E.R. We made the news, ALL day friday 2 weeks ago, and the paper the next day. Jesus, I hope the black 8's aren't TOO cursed.... Mines had enough abuse already in the 2 years I've had it. I ran over a rabbit at 90mph, thus messing up the wheel housing. I got hit by a retard in a WRX who decided to just turn right into me. Then I thought it was a good idea to drive on the freeway in half a foot of snow and hit the barrier twice. Then my engine went bad. Then some unknown force bumped me and cracked the paint on my new front bumper. Then some other unknown mashed my REAR bumper at work... Sigh... Speaking of which I got my old job back! woo!

Anyway, hopefully the sum of those instances satisfies the required cursed quota the Black rx-8 god seem to be demanding...

My wife had wanted an Rx since before we were married 24 years ago. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, she decided it was time and we found her a grey 2004 AT on ksl.com. She is delighted. So, please welcome Marcelle to the ranks of the Utah RX8club.

Her new baby seems to be well-cared for. But a previous owner made some poor upgrade choices and we need to undo those and take it back to stock.

So, anyone in Utah have a stock airbox and/or exhaust they'd like to get rid of?

Also, who would you recommend for service (not necessarily performance tuning, but good, inexpensive RX service) in the Provo/Orem or Salt Lake area?

Service. Unfortunately, Legacy Mazda died last year- and they were the dealer I bought mine from. The closest dealer to you is now D. Dahle, in Murray. I have had good experiences with them, as well as Bountiful Mazda (the dealer who installed my Mazdaspeeed exhaust). Others may know good shops not affiliated with Mazda, but I always advise sticking with Mazda until you are clearly, totally out-of-warranty, just to be safe and avoid arguments with Service Managers.

But the good news is that Jethro Tull had a pristine stock exhaust lying around from his MazdaSpeed upgrade. We picked it up from him yesterday. So, as far as the exhaust goes, we're set.

SLCRX8.com is having our end-of-season cruise on November 7th. We will be meeting at Sugarhouse Park and leaving from there at 10:00 am. The cruise is headed up Parley's canyon on I-80, then turning off on 189 (US 40) headed south. We'll then take 35 through Francis, Kamas, & Oakley before lunching in Wanship at the Spring Chicken Inn. Then back to SLC on I-80 westbound.

So the route is fast at first, slower in the middle, then a longer fast route home. Should be a fair amount of snow on the mountaintops by then but the roads will be clear (hopefully).

The alternate date is Nov. 14th, if bad weather scrubs us on the 7th. If it's bad again on the 14th then we'll just have lunch or dinner in-town.

We hope to have a great turnout for this autumn cruise- probably the last big one before springtime. See you there!

The salt trucks haven't rolled in West Valley yet. They typically wait until December so they don't use up their entire salt budget by February. But I think this weekend I'll officially put her to bed.

Kind of a bummer because last year she didn't get put away until December 13th. The year before, it was November 30th. So I'm feeling a little cheated this year.

The Exploder is running well, though I noticed a new oil drip recently. For a '91 that's not too bad. The tires are good for one more winter, and I put a CD player in it last spring. I just replaced the coolant a month ago and put new wiper blades on it. Bring on winter.

Thanks, Phil, it was a terrific drive. I should do that more often, when it's dry and reasonably warm. Those Dunlops have zero grip when they are cold.

The water year is pretty bleak so-far. We haven't had a really meaningful storm since before Christmas. The storm track is just missing us and hitting eastern Colorado instead. There is already some talk of water restrictions this summer.

I think it's a tad premature. Last year most of our water came as rain during a late and protracted spring. I'm betting it will be a similar pattern this year.

That's because you don't have a yard to water or a pool to fill, and probably don't pay a monthly water bill. :banghead:
I guarantee that one day you will, if not worry about it, at least definitely think about it occassionally. So enjoy your bliss while you can!

And just so you know, when you do start paying a water bill, generally only about 1/3 of it is for the water itself- the other 2/3 is a sewer charge! But when the water cost goes up, the sewer charge does too. I can't figure that one out.

If there is a water shortage then we can just drink beer :icon_tup:. Jethro - set some time aside this late spring for coming to vegas. That will give you a great drive.

Vegas is on the agenda for this year Phil, but the timing may not coincide with the meet. It's next to impossible for my wife and I to get time-off at the same time, any time of the year other than Christmas. I'm still working on smoothing out a solo getaway once in a while. Stay tuned, and thanks for the invitation!

Anybody know of a good shop in the Salt Lake / Riverton Utah area that is knowledgeable about the RX-8?

bose
01-19-2010, 01:24 PM
There aren't a whole lot of options really, best bet is the dealer probably. There really isn't a rotary shop around town. I know a pretty good amount, most of the guys on this forum and the local forum slcrx8.com

What's going on with your 8?

wsgator
01-19-2010, 01:48 PM
Manual tranny whine and exhaust smell (comes into cab when sunroof or side windows are open). I think the smell may be from a bad catalytic converter. The dealers suck, they tell me the whine is normal but the shifting from 1st to second and especially 2nd to 1st is clunky and is easy to grind. I have noticed that I am now getting a whirring sound from the tranny that goes with the car speed and not the engine and is there when the clutch pedal is pressed and not pressed when the car is cold. There is also excessive noise from the tranny when sitting idle with the clutch engaged. when cold, the car will actually try to move forward when in neutral and clutch engaged. Any Ideas?
D Dahle Mazda said it was the throwout bearing, I know for a fact it is not. I have very good automotive knowledge but I am still learning the quirks of the RX-8 and the rotary.

Jethro Tull
01-19-2010, 02:09 PM
Check your motor mounts and clutch bracket. Both are known to fail.

Jethro Tull
01-19-2010, 02:15 PM
My tranny is notchy when cold but smooths out once warmed up. Search threads for gear oil in the transmission, some people have replaced the stock gear oil with another brand that they say works better and smooths things out.

The whine may be the differential if it's related to car speed and not engine speed.

You may have a hole in your exhaust. How old is your car? Have you been pre-mixing? Excessive oil can lead to early CAT failure.

wsgator
01-19-2010, 03:26 PM
It's a 2004, I bought it with 53K on it last year. It now has 62K. I have not been premixing. I know it's the tranny that is whining because shifting changes it. it seems to be an input shaft bearing since the whine will get higher when I shift down causing the input shaft to spin faster. The motor mounts were changed under warranty last summer.

Sounds like you've narrowed it down, and if that's the cause, you don't need a rotary expert. Just make sure if you don't take it to a dealer that they are careful with your driveline. It's not metal.

bose
01-19-2010, 04:23 PM
I also have a whirring sound when driving and a grind in second. The grind is definitely a syncro, I've known that. It's from having the wrong type of GL-5 oil in the trans, the friction modifiers in certain GL-5's eat the soft brass syncro's. So for a GL-5 make sure the modifiers are removed i.e. Redline 75w90 ns. Or a GL-4 or any brand will work great. The whirring I think is just gear mesh but not sure I can't narrow it down cause nothing looks fucked up. I've heard that noise since day one and can't see anything that worn or bad.:dunno:

With the exhaust smell in the cabin it could be a bad cat. Also could be and exhaust leak somewhere in that area. Cats are easy to check on your own, at the same time you could check the bolt and such for tightness.

wsgator
01-19-2010, 05:06 PM
I get that syncro sound when shifting from 1st to second also. I put in Mobile 1 synthetic gear oil but it sounds like I need to change to the Redline you mentioned. Igues the thing that irritates me the most about this is the Mazda dealers (D Dahle and Bountiful) and their diagnosis of the problem, the drive train was still under warranty when I brought this to their attention. I'd bet it would be a whole new diagnosis if it were on my dime. I guess the real kicker is that they diagnosed it as a throw out bearing when all tests I do are totally proving otherwise.

The exhaust smell is getting worse the longer that I have had the car. I don't hear any exhaust leaks but I will definitely check. Thanks for the help.

One more thing, I have noticed that about half the time the car gets sluggish at various upper RPMs and other times it's smooth and quick, any ideas on that?

bose
01-19-2010, 05:30 PM
That sounds like coils, plugs and wires to me. Do you know if they were done before you got it, or have you done them. With that many miles it's a must. Just don't buy from the dealer, you can get the parts a lot cheaper online. I'll find a few links just give me a bit.

I have heard the throwout bearing does cause a noise due to it's design but they say it's normal. That is a noise we just have to deal with, it can be annoying I know but the only way to fix it is to do it yourself, cause Mazda isn't going to do anything about it sadly.

The dealers around here don't give the best support but they have more knowledge than most shop so it's the best we have. UGGH my stomach turns just saying it.

bose
01-19-2010, 05:41 PM
Mazdatrix has a selection of wires and also have the coils for a good price. http://www.mazdatrix.com/8ignition.htm

BHR has the plugs for the best price, $80 for the set here: http://blackhaloracing.com/products-page/engine/ignition/ They also have a total ignition solution which is pretty pricey, but I love mine. If you have any questions I'll answer them as best as I can if not the owner of BHR would gladly talk to you, he's a really good guy.

Those are just a couple of places. If you search more you may be able to find better deals.

Thanks for the links. I did replace my plugs, I bought them on a group buy from Mazmart on this forum, that did seem to help it run better but it still has the problem I mentioned. I will check out those links, I forgot about the coils and wires.

If rain in Vegas relates to snow in Utah, you best get the snow plows out.

Depends on your altitude.

I'm at the bottom of the valley and just had rain for the past few days. My yard used to be covered in snow and it's all melted this week. Daytime temps have been in the 40's.

The mountains have been plastered, however. Some winters are like that, and if there's anything to global warming, they will trend that way. Rain in the valleys, snow in the mountains. Fine by me.

If it's covered under warranty, why worry? If they replace a good part, and the problem is still there, they try again and replace something else- again under warranty.

The only down side is the time it takes while you don't have the car. If it's your only car, I can see where it would be a hassle.

But if it's covered under warranty, I would have no problem letting them replace part after part until they get it right.

I'm only 3 years into a 6-year extended warranty that I paid a lot of money for. I'm going to wave that thing in their face as much as it takes whenever there's a problem.

bose
01-20-2010, 04:10 PM
Definitely must do the coils and wires I would be willing to bet that's cause your upper RPM stutter. The brown hard stuff from what I've seen is pretty normal, you don't want black or white that would be an indication of a rich or lean condition respectively. And you don't want plugs that look or feel 'wet'

wsgator
01-20-2010, 05:01 PM
The warranty is great if they use it. They would not even try, they were avoiding warrantying the tranny by blaming the throwout bearing. I would show them ways that I could prove without a doubt that it wasn't the throwout and they would still say they couldn't do anything and and couldn't explain why they still think I was wrong.
This all started at D Dahle Mazda where they charged me $125 just to give me a wrongful diagnosis. I told them that if I get a second opinion and find out that their diagnosis was wrong that they would be refunding my money. I called Mazda and told them my problem and they said I should take it to Bountiful Mazda. So I called Bountiful Mazda and then drove 30+ miles just to have the underwriter that obviously knew very little about auto mechanics look at my car for about 5 seconds and say it was normal. He did not even run any tests or even have a experienced mechanic look at it. I could tell something had gone awry so I asked and found out that D Dahle called ahead and tainted my chances of even getting a unbiased diagnosis. The guy even told me that I voided my warranty by putting synthetic oil in the tranny! The guy at Bountiful Mazda was being a real jerk. Why did they call them ahead of me if they were positive about their own diagnosis?
I called Mazda again with my concerns after D Dahle's diagnosis and then told Mazda about the communication Dahle gave to Bountiful and the biased diagnosis so they called and set up to have the master technician at Bountiful Mazda look at it. They found and warrantied the bad motor mounts and found a bulletin from Mazda that mentions the sound of the transmission is normal and is not the throwout bearing. Dahle's diagnosis was wrong and what I said was right. The fact that I knew they were wrong made me pursue this further.
I still have my reservations on whether that noise is normal due to the clunky shifting but I am going to try a different gear oil as mentioned earlier in this thread.

Dealerships are one of the most frustrating experience a person can go through. I have had to deal with them in a warranty fight, it basically came down to them saying 'sue us.' Sure makes you sour on the whole subject in general. I feel for you man.

Jethro Tull
01-21-2010, 05:32 PM
Well I hope I never have to go through a warranty argument with a dealership. They always do what I ask them to. But then, I have a way of just ruining a person's whole day if they don't accomodate me in situations like that.

I've made school principals cry, no lie.
