well im looking for some new summer tires, will most likely be purchasing them friday. not to sure what tires to go with. I really like discount tire and have always bought my tires from them without a single issue. Anyways, i want something good for handling but I also need something that is going to hold up decently. we put alot of miles on the car now since were sharing it and dont want to have to replace them next summer. These i found seem decent and there an all season (which im usually very much against) but the reviews arent bad and its got a decent treadwere rating.. what do you think? any other suggestions also?

I find it funny they only mention the 'EVIL RX8 GUYS', as I recall it their buddy in the white Honda did some revving and some burnouts, uh and the red Speed6 sounding off his mighty blow off valve, backfiring like hell with his 5" exhaust. I had to lol that anyone would cry about engines being revved up that's just ridiculous.

I will be at the SLC Rotary meet this weekend for sure.

Nice Bose, see ya there! Tim, check out Victors Tires, He has several locations, and he has a tire, I put them on my 8, They are a Trazano N7000. The tread wear is a 360 and I paid $480 for all 4 mounted and balanced! Much better deal! I ran them all winter with no trouble at all.

How about that snow :eyetwitch...

I thought you'd be happy about it. It won't stick around down in the valley, but some resorts got a foot- with more coming on Wednesday.

Next weekend is supposed to be good. Not as warm as last weekend, but dry and in the 50's. I'll take it.

Now the bad news. The tranny in my rusty old Explorer started sounding really funny on the ride home today. I thought it was the slave cylinder starting to go...for over a year, it's been getting harder and harder to get it into gear when it's not moving. Shifts OK when moving. But tonight in the driveway, with it in gear, I had my foot on the clutch and revved it up...and it started to roll forward slowly. So now I think that it could be either the clutch or the slave cylinder. And the front bearing may be on the way out, too. With my luck, I'll need to swap it out for a rebuild. I'm taking it to the shop in the morning, and will drive the company pickup for a day or two.

The old Ford is 19 years old, and although it's only got 118,000 miles on it, it's not worth but a couple of hundred bucks. Still, I can't replace it for what it's worth, or what a rebuilt tranny will cost (about a grand), so I may as well keep it on the road for a while longer. The tires only have 8,000 miles on them.

It's nice having a 4WD vehicle for those bad storm days in winter, and also not having to worry about it getting dinged in a parking lot somewhere.

And it was REALLY nice registering it for only $49 this year! :)

not sure if all cars are different but when my slave cylinder went out on my integra back in tampa the pedal just lost all pressure and couldnt get into, or out of gear. sounds a bit like yours but in mine it got to where there was no pedal pressure at all.. On that car it was a 20 dollar part, I did the master at the same time just because and I thikn I paid about 150 for parts and labor

On the Explorer 5-speed, the slave cylinder is inside the bell housing. You have to pull the whole tranny to get to it. Pain in the butt!

^Got it, check yours for reply.

I drove the Explorer for the first 5 years, then when my wife wrecked her second Subaru, I let her have it and I drove a Ranger pickup for the next 8 years. Then she bought her Forester, I sold the little truck and took the Explorer back. So I guess I have about ten total years driving it, certainly enough to make a butt print!

Jethro Tull
03-24-2009, 07:45 PM
Just talked to the tranny shop. It definitely needs a slave cylinder, and a clutch. It was down almost to the rivets and it was wearing unevenly. Won't get it back until tomorrow. I drove the company truck home tonight.

must be nice!! thats a long ass time in one car, I dont think I could do it. Im only 21 and I have had 8 cars haha.. Recently its been two at a time but I started with a 99 mustang gt, wrecked it and got a 2002 gt, sold that and got a 2002 solara and a 95 civic with a built/turbo integra gsr motor, sold that and got a 1996 integra with fully build all motor set up (200whp), sold that got a 94 toyota pick up with a 12 inch lift and 37" tires, sold that and got a 99 integra ls, I kept that for a year and a half, I absolutely loved it and the only reason I got rid of it was to move here, I Wish I could get another. I also traded in the solara for the rx8 about 1.5 years ago

bose
03-24-2009, 09:35 PM
Got it JT, thanks.

I have only had three cars in my life. A 96 Saturn sonething, it was a piece of shit, wrecked rebuild I replaced 4 alternators before just giving up. Then I got a 2002 Sunlight Sliver Mazda Protege. I have always loved that silver, hence my current car color. I rear ended a trailer hitch with a truck attatched to the front, split the rad in half cracked the manifold, frame split in half. Obviously it was totaled, got a check for 5000 and put it down on the 8.

Tim Tim Tim
03-24-2009, 10:26 PM
I have been lucky with most cars, the only one I had to dump alot of money into was the truck, as soon as I bought it I had to put over 500 in rebuilding the front end.. that was just parts haha. The 2002 mustang I put some mods on but that was it as far as money. just intake, full exaust, short shifter etc.

Hey Bose, Thanks again for the pre-mix Saturday! Great ride. I installed my front springs today. I will probably wait until Saturday to do the rears. The front is now slightly lower than the rear, I hope they will settle some and drop a little more. If not I cut a bit more off of the bump stops.

94 toyota pick up with a 12 inch lift and 37" tires,

Before I bought the Explorer, I had a custom all-fiberglass (no rust) '74 Toyota FJ40 landcruiser, with 10" lift and 37" tires. That thing was a blast. Sunroof, Jensen 200 watt stereo, Visonik speakers, CB radio. It was also a money pit, lol!

Jethro Tull
03-25-2009, 12:09 PM
Then I got a 2002 Sunlight Sliver Mazda Protege. I have always loved that silver, hence my current car color.

The very first car I ever bought brand-new was a '77 Plymouth Arrow (same chassis as the Dodge Colt), and it was silver with black trim. I loved that little car, it was intended to compete with the likes of the Datsun B210, etc. 1.6 liter engine, it would top-out at about 115mph. My first 5-speed. I modded it with a header, free-flow exhaust, and a new differential that made it a little peppier off the line. Sold it in '86, sigh. You never forget your first love. I was 18 years old, it was my graduation gift to myself. $700 down, $125/mo. payments. :lol2:

The car sat in the Cottonwood Mall for like 2 weeks before I could take posession of it, as part of a promotion the dealer was running, with a velvet rope around it. It was a cool car, in it's day.

That's when I fell in love with silver as a car color. It's so hi-tech looking.

Jethro Tull

77, they had cars back then????

There were wicked cars back then. You could get a set of good tires for under $100, cars didn't need or have computers, AM and FM radio were totally different, gas was 70 cents a gallon, and most cops didn't have a radar gun. The ones that did, it didn't work most of the time. The music was better (except for that disco crap, lol), there weren't as many people, the traffic wasn't as bad. Saturday Night Live was only in it's second season and it was funny back then.

Did you know that we were supposed to have flying cars by now? A Hilton hotel on the moon? Free energy?

The funny thing is, as different as some things are now, most things are exactly the same. There are just a few more gadgets that nobody really needs, and everything costs more.

And then we've got all the people who post but dont show-up (Enigmah, for example) and they figure in there somewhere.

As long as Dave U. from SLC Rotary doesn't buy an 8, I'll remain the oldest I guess. And he's not much older than me...though he has less gray hair, lol.

I just put a new stereo in the Explorer. A Pioneer CD/receiver, 200 watts, with iPod input. Sounds pretty good, better than the old Motorola stock AM/FM/Cassette, which was dying anyway. There are already two threaded holes in the stock grille, but you need a special stand-off plate-holder to attach it. The plate won't attach directly to the holes in the grille. It came with the car, if you bought a used 8 without one, then you can get one from the dealer.

I've never run a front plate on this car, or my 7 when I had it.

In Utah they won't pull you over for no front plate, but if they pull you over for something else, they will write you up for it then.

$25 fine. Most people I know will just pay the fine if it comes to that.

bose
03-31-2009, 09:45 AM

Jethro Tull
03-31-2009, 03:25 PM
Next time you're driving, just notice how many cars in the oncoming lane have front plates. You'll be surprised at how many DON'T. I've noticed sometimes it's better than one car in ten, even one car in five (between 10% and 20%) without a front plate. It's not just sports cars with low, sleek noses, it's everything. Trucks to junkers.

Tim Tim Tim
03-31-2009, 05:55 PM
I personally think its completely stupid to have it, have you ever been pulled over from the front? if your going one way, a cop is going another do you actually think he is going to catch that tag number? my answer is now to all of the above. In florida we had no front plates and that didnt seem to hinder the cops efforts to ruin peoples days haha

Hey Guys sorry its been so long since i have posted. I am still here and have been reading everything regularly. I guess im more a site lurcher than anything. I pulled up next to bose last night on state and 106th and I just had to comment how sick your 8 was. I really like the small accents you have added here and there. Im jealous i missed the last couple of meets after seeing some of the pics.

hiya fellas. havent been on for a couple days. I'm down here in Long Beach again and I'm loving it! I feel like I should just leave the 8 hear. Its so happy lol.

About the "not pulling you over fro fron plate" thing. IVE been pulled over for that and nothing else. It was a highway patrolman. He already had someone pulled over and there was a lot of traffic, but for whatever reason when I passed he booked it after me just to pull me over and give me a warning about needing a front plate. i played dumb and said i wasnt sure if it was an actual law or not and he gave me a warning. Crazy huh?

Before I came down here I got an oil change a LHM chrysler/jeep (I bought my car there and get free oil changes and safety/emissions for 3 years). I drove straight from there over to southtowne mall and when i got back in my car the engine light came on. So I went back to have them check it out. They claimed nothing about the oil would set off an engine light but the diagnostic test said i was running Lean. uh oh, girlfriend is calling. to be continued...

I have a sad story about oil changes... about 6 months after i got my car i took it to jiffy lube to get its 2nd oil change... most of the guys there were just messing around not paying attention to what they were doing.... so as they were pulling my car in they were also backing up a truck in ... BAMMMM!!!! they hit my car... I was PISSSS!!!!!!!!!! long story short the manager was great about the situation, did not charge me for the oil change and of course they fixed my car.... althoug that front bumper has never look the same... the guy who fix it said that V-red was a really hard color to match... :( :(

Sure Dave, I can spare a bottle or two. But I'm really busy on Suday, might have to catch up with you on Monday if that's OK.

You must drive that car a lot! Since our meet at Iggy's, I've only driven about a tank and a half in the 8- about 8 or 9 ounces of premix.

Of course, I've driven the Explorer about five or six tank's worth...and it gets the same mileage as the 8!

man o man what a work week. I havent been on here in like four days now haha.

Ive been off work since last Wednesday. I am recarpeting one of 3 sets of stairs in the house, but noticed that I needed to repaint the stairwell first, but then I noticed that I needed to re-do some molding and drywall before that...so now here it is, midnight on Saturday and I'm only just now ready to install the carpet! And I have to go back to work on Monday! Going to get up early to do the carpet because as soon as that's done, I have to drive over to my mom's and try and fix a chair of hers.

It's been the busiest 4 days off I can remember in a long time.

At least your week was for pay, Tim...mine cost me! :banghead:

I have those damned swirl marks in my paint, but there is some polish that can remove them, and I also need to take a clay bar to it (little bit of overspray from something).
Okay, JT I will see you there. Thanks

Jethro Tull
04-06-2009, 04:18 PM
Get a SLOW speed buffer, and they type of bonnet you use is important. I can't recall now, but some materials are less abrasive than others. The type of polishing compound you use, in combination with the speed of the buffer and the bonnet material, are what determines if the paint gets damaged or not.

I think a random-action or dual-action (orbital) buffer is preferable to one that just spins around. Those are the worst.

I've already made up my mind to never use a mechanical buffer. If it takes most of a day to do it by hand, so be it.

The dealer (and an independant mechanic) are both telling me that it will cost me about $80 just to diagnose it.

The dealer is almost positive that it will be in the dash, and they just replace the whole instrument cluster...a used one is about $150, a new one, even if one can be found for an 18-year-old car, would be around $400.

Of course, all my miles disappear...it's like getting a new...odometer! lol.

I know what you mean, I've posted about it before. Some 8 drivers are totally rude, and I can't figure it out.

I used to have a nice Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser, 34" tires, 10" lift kit, clean. Every Landcruiser I ever passed, I got a wave from the other driver. Never met a stuck-up one, like I do with some 8 owners.

I'm on, looks good!

My engine bay was smoking cause they spilled oil all over my engine and my engine light was putting up the code saying it was runnin lean and mazda said it was being cause by a crack in some pieve of my intake. I'm not convinced however. I read the sheet and it said there are a few things about oil that can set off the same code. I tihnk its too much of a coincedence that the last 2 times my engine light has come on has been directly after oil was added or changed...

Also Chewbacca rode with me almost all the way too and back from Long Beach, but has once again left after a few hours of rest...Does that make any sense at all to anyone? When Chewbacca is there it also seems to have a loss of power. I'm not positive its not in my head though... Anywho anyone who wants to hear it should send me a PM with a phonenumber and I'll send a sound clip. Unless this actually works Chewbacca.amr - 0.02MB (http://www.zshare.net/download/583429900d373a8c/) or this http://www.zshare.net/download/583429900d373a8c/

I really hate to say it but I would bet you probably have low compression. When the engine heats up and the metal expands the seal your engine is able to provide isn't up to snuff. You still have warranty I would use it to your advantage. Not sure about the CEL's though.

There is a post under the DIY about freeing up stuck seals, might be worth a try. You use transmission fluid which has alot of cleaning agents to free the apex seal and springs. It seems to work well if the seals are not concaved or cracked

04 made you a Mod, so you should access to all of that now!

Hey, I'm on, and I said that I wanted to be a mod first! :eyetwitch

Looks really good. Now we need cards to set on windshields.

My new DSL modem should be here tomorrow. I haven't had Internet access at home since early Monday morning. Sucks.

I last drove it on Monday. I've only put on a couple of hundred miles so-far this year, mostly due to the rain and snow coming when I've had the time to drive.

The little break we had today was just enough time for me to mow the lawn and put some tomato and cucumber starts in the garden, then downpour hit around 6.

I sure hope next weekend has good weather, I'm sick of storms. If we get a break during the week, I'll take her to work, something I rarely do.

Thank you, perhaps I will take a drive up there in coming weeks. Be sure to register on the SLC website that Raliegh posted about, above, and we can remain in touch. Only one or two women RX-8 drivers down here, at least that have registered on our club website, although we have seen a couple more in passing.

I may be too late but there is a beautiful.... Red RX-8 with black ( I dont know the brand wheels) in Logan. The paint Job is not stock and looks incredible. The interior is imaculate as well. The leather two tone black and red. The only problem is the high mileage. 85K

Now, just get rid of that front plate bracket and get some white eyelids. Those will add at least another 50hp! :)
