View Full Version : Light your Stick! Dipstick & Engine Bay LED Light
Lebren 04-04-2009, 06:55 PM When I bought my 2004 RX8 it was missing something important in the Engine Bay; a Light to see the Dipstick when I check the oil level (VERY FREQUENTLY!)
After a year of developing the LED light I have installed in my RX8 and want you to have an opportunity to have one too!
• Fuse protected for ultimate in Safety
• Temperature tested, extremely Durable
• Up to 45 Lumens of Bright light where you need it, when you need it
• Lights up Oil Filter area during oil changes
• STEALTH (GREAT for show cars)
• Easy to install takes only 15-20 minutes
• Water Resistant Coating
Included in the kit are instructions, an alcohol pad for cleaning area, and LED Dipstick Light with Switch.
The only tool needed is a Philips screwdriver, lights mount with self adhesive tape and work with years 2004 thru 2008
Send me an Email for custom applications as these can be modified for other vehicles, years, and locations too. It appears Mazda has completely relocated the oil filter and dipstick for 2009 + models, I am working on a light for 2009 + as we speak, that should have similar installation.

rx8mod83 04-04-2009, 08:16 PM Hmm very tempting... How long do the LEDs last?
Lebren 04-04-2009, 08:37 PM It is Extremely rare for these LED's to fail, they actually get a little brighter after 1000 hours. My feeling is they will last as long as your car is on the road or track!
myriadshalaks 04-04-2009, 09:09 PM i think i'm in. it sounds cool. any pics of them on when installed? and i can't really get a sense of how it sits in there. does it look clean? how's the tape hold up in there? kinda hot area.
Lebren 04-04-2009, 10:32 PM Ok, from first to last, within the next day or so there will be more installed pics up so please keep checking. The initial prototypes had black and red wire, it was not as clean so my beta testers guided me to chose a more neutral color for the wires (thanks guys you know who you are :) ) The light sits under the AC Bracket, it is VERY stealth, you can't even tell it's there! The tape is good for one time, maybe two if installing carefully. The alcohol will clean any debris and dust for a good contact of the tape. Finally, the heat is not so bad, I have years of experience testing LED's in critical conditions and am confident in the longevity of this light. Thank You for your interest and keep checking back for more pics!
myriadshalaks 04-04-2009, 10:37 PM where is the button?
Lebren 04-04-2009, 11:29 PM In the first picture, the on/off switch is located on the right. It is rectangular and black. I'm working on getting more pics up.
\\Konig\\ 04-04-2009, 11:31 PM glad to see these finally coming out!
lebren has installed this light on my rx8 and i can vouch for him being a great guy and offering a great product =] no more anger from trying to stick the dipstick into that tiny little hole at night! the light is VERY bright and is in the perfect spot imo.
i will have pics of my install shortly and ill post them up here!
oh and quick question, where it says "38 for the first and 34 for additional lights", what exactly do you mean by additional lights?
gregs 04-04-2009, 11:34 PM i have a dip stick light kit from lebren, he personally installed mine and from start to finish was soo easy and user friendly...also im very happy with the quality being this is very stealth yet produces plenty of light...ill post pics soon
thanks again lebren i am very happy with your product!
(i can vouch for a good quality product and knowledge from lebren)

i'll wait for more pics.
GaMEChld 04-05-2009, 01:02 PM oh and quick question, where it says "38 for the first and 34 for additional lights", what exactly do you mean by additional lights?
probably if you have other cars you want to throw it in, then 34 for additional
nvrfalter 04-05-2009, 02:33 PM hmmm... i'll be waiting on pics
RXallan 04-05-2009, 02:59 PM looks interesting

hmm hahaha, these lights have all sorts of uses!
ill get plenty of pics tonight for sure and a couple daytime ones too!
\\Konig\\ 04-05-2009, 10:15 PM here are some daytime pics!
dont mind the dirtyness of my car, the pollen during this time of the year is unstoppable =[
couple of notes: the button for my dipstick light is a little visible, however, you can completely hide it if you just scoot it under the metal bracket a tiny bit more than i did. it doesnt bother me at all though, no one would EVER notice it unless i pointed it out. and also since mine was an early prototype, minor things were a bit different, such as the color of the wire (my wire is red, new one is grey).
ill get some night time pics later today when it gets darker!

RenesisX-8 04-06-2009, 01:03 PM This is really cool! I just wish it was a little cheaper... more around the $20-$25 range.
myriadshalaks 04-06-2009, 01:48 PM if we got enough people, could we do 25?
Kafka 04-06-2009, 04:12 PM The Konig's pics are really good....should use it for the sales department man!
Good luck! :)
savedsol 04-06-2009, 04:44 PM You could buy a 3watt LED flashlight for $25 and be able to illuminate lots of things! Not to crap on your product but an expensive solution.
Lebren 04-06-2009, 07:25 PM Thank all of you for your thoughts and input. The convenience after installing my product has paid for itself tenfold and I am confident you will feel the same when it's installed in your engine bay as well!

wankelbolt 04-28-2009, 10:47 PM got mine in the mail and opened it up. It's smaller than I imagined, and the build quality is very good (I'm an electrical engineer). The light is very bright and whiter than I anticipated too. I don't think I could replicate this for $29; my time is money and this is done better than I would do it. Looking forward to getting it installed. Will get it done this weekend and post some pictures.
nuke0907 04-30-2009, 09:04 PM any plans for other colors of LED's?
Razz1 04-30-2009, 10:11 PM Can I get some in Blue.
Want to open my hood and wam.....
Edit: But really... this isn't a very good solution for the hole. Jst put some hair around it. You'll find it everytime.
Lebren 04-30-2009, 10:34 PM any plans for other colors of LED's?
I would really like to do some cool colors!
Cool White for a frosty HID look
Blue full and deep a really clean choice
Green a rich ocean green, nice
Amber stand out from the crowd!
Red bright and evil
Yellow only the brave!
I need 3 buyers before I can order the LED's for any of these colors. Once I get 3 buyers I will order parts and build/ship them right away! Warm White are always ready to ship!
The LED's are high quality Cree chips, my original Warm White (seen below) are Nichia LED's one of the best LED manufacturers in my opinion!
Here are some pictures that I hope will give everyone a better feel for the quality Lights I produce!

nuke0907 04-30-2009, 10:59 PM would be cool to be able to light up the entire engine bay.

Delmeister 05-04-2009, 06:53 AM You could buy a 3watt LED flashlight for $25 and be able to illuminate lots of things! Not to crap on your product but an expensive solution.Yeah but where is it when you need it?
Most things you purchase have alternatives. You go to a restaurant instead of eating at home. The actual food cost is usually a trivial fraction of your final bill. You pay for service, rent, light, heat, advertising etc. With GBs the people that actually develop the product make very little profit (compared to the hundreds of percent markup that you see in the real world). They invest in some cases hundreds of hours for the love of it. I doubt they make anything significant as far as an hourly wage goes.
Anyway Lebren, I say good job man. But I don't want one because I already have a 99 cent solution.
Ok I'll take one. I would normally take the white, but I'll take any colour that you need to fill out your order for something new other people may want to try out.
And I don't like paying extra shipping to Canada. Just send it first class mail through USPS. Those Fedex, UPS, etc. guys skim off a handling fee at the border, and then hand it over to the customs guys to take their cut. I would rather have it get lost than support those crooks. Don't worry if I don't get it, I'll trust you sent it. PM me if we have a deal.
Lebren 05-05-2009, 01:14 AM Thank you for your thoughts Delmeister, it is true I do this for the passion of sharing with everyone and anyone with a passion of rotary (ok and also piston engines too.)
All profits find their way in future products that will enhance the functionality of your ride, that's right, you invest in future R&D with each purchase! I love what I do, it's embedded in every product I make!
I ship USPS and provide delivery confirmation. If you don't receive your product, no questions asked another is on it's way.
I have ordered two sets of YELLOW & GREEN, and 3 sets of COOL WHITE, BLUE, RED, and AMBER led's. Taking orders for every color, for your choice of Hood Mount or AC Bracket mount.
Hood Mount will light up your entire engine bay, AC Bracket mount will illuminate your dipstick/oil filter area. RED and AMBER are the brightest colors, Delmeister, what color would you like, and mounting preference? Feel free to send payment and I will let you know if there is any difference in cost to ship. You will NOT be disappointed!
LEBREN
\\Konig\\ 05-05-2009, 01:52 AM ooh hood mount...thats really tempting! a red one would match my interior lights soo good...
Delmeister 05-05-2009, 09:24 AM But does the hood mount still allow you to see the dipstick hole (without the hair)?
Edit-added another question.
Do the two mounts use basically the same light assembly and switch? I guess what I'm getting at is whether it is possible to try both positions to see which one works best.
jsjjr 05-05-2009, 07:57 PM Awfully cool idea...
Lebren 05-05-2009, 09:01 PM the dipstick is still visible but I have to figure out how to trim all that hair, it really gets in the way! But seriously, check out the pictures to get a better idea how much light the warm white throws off. I will have the other colors later this week, possibly have pics up this weekend. This is just a quick and dirty setup, I will have the final assembly by the end of the week. Note, light is not completely centered.
I'd get the white for the dipstick and color for the engine bay, Ive got a green set with my name on it.. for the best of both worlds! :):)
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd187/240tek/IMG_6849.jpg http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd187/240tek/IMG_6841.jpg http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd187/240tek/IMG_6847.jpghttp://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd187/240tek/IMG_6863.jpg
jsjjr 05-05-2009, 09:57 PM Wow, that is really nice. I almost pulled the trigger on the A/C mounted one, but I almost like this one better. I still might get the other though..
Lebren 05-05-2009, 10:32 PM myriadshalks, I really don't know what keeps happening to your posts, but in response... what is the color of your car? I am working on getting the wires as stealth as possible, and with a bit of paint you can match it perfect making wires nearly invisible to the untrained eye. The Shroud on the hood also helps. Also, I am working on the next generation board though it won't be available for some time. Thanks!
LEBREN
myriadshalaks 05-05-2009, 11:28 PM i keep changing my mind. i feel like i want something almost exactly like what you're making, but not exactly. And i don't feel like I should ask for a custom since you're trying to make a bunch of them.
but i'll ask. i'd like it to be disjunctive, either blue or white depending on a single switch (maybe press once for white, again for blue, again for off).
I think i can run the wires down the drivers side and hide that pretty easily. but going up the bracket and back down and around the hood is going to be more difficult. your suggestion with paint is good. but what can be used to secure it?
what do you think?
MidLife8 05-05-2009, 11:48 PM I finally got a chance to install my dipstick lights and I am delighted with the results, no pun intended. The light/switch assembly is really high class. The installation could scarcely be easier. OK perhaps a sketch of the alignment/location of the switch. You do that part by feel, under the a/c bracket avoiding any protruding hardware. This is an excellent solution to the find/replace the dipstick problem. If only Mazda had dipped the end of the dipstick tube in white paint so you could visualize it easier.
Delmeister 05-06-2009, 12:45 PM If only Mazda had dipped the end of the dipstick tube in white paint so you could visualize it easier.
Hmmm. Great idea. I just went out and wrapped my dipstick hole with thick white weather stripping and it sure makes a difference. It's not holding so good because I didn't degrease the tube well. Multiple turns of double-sided foam tape should work too. This may make the hood mount more appealing.
Edit: Improvement -- I used 3/16 inch thick white weather stripping, sticky one side. Clean the oil off the tube. Cut off a 4 inch piece of weather stripping. Form it into a circle, sticky side inwards. Stick the two sticky ends to each other so you have a loop with about a half inch tab. Holding by the tab, lower the loop over the tube so the top of the tube is flush with the top side of the loop. Squeeze it all together. Cut ofF the tab any length you want. You will have a white ring with an arrow (tab) pointing to it.
myriadshalaks 05-06-2009, 11:39 PM /this guy did origami in his engine bay
\\Konig\\ 05-07-2009, 12:21 AM hahahaha
Lebren 05-09-2009, 06:38 PM Nice work Delmeister, its not a bad idea. I was considering including a small grommet with the kit. Then I realized it just wouldn't make sense to include it when there's so much light from the LED's. On the other hand, with the Hood Mount, it becomes more realistic to have an identifier around the dipstick's holder.
USPS came through once again and brought me these:
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd187/240tek/IMG_6873.jpg
I'll be building some new boards, very close to figuring out the wiring also :)
Delmeister 05-10-2009, 09:29 AM Funny thing now, the hole is visible in dim light but the end of the dipstick isn't. It usually takes a few pokes to mate. Next obvious step is to paint the tip white.
I have never needed a hood light, but have needed to see the dipstick location in dim or no lighting dozens of times, so I think I'll stick with the dipstick light for now. I'll PM you the details.
Lebren 05-10-2009, 03:09 PM I know your frustration! Getting some AWESOME results with different colors, just a couple more and I'll get some pics up! Ive got a feeling..... red is going to be HOT!!!:asthanos::FIREdevil:love: ...yeah, that hot!
EDIT: Careful about painting dipstick; it goes in your oil pan, gets really hot, paint will peel off and contaminate.
Happy Mother's Day!

myriadshalaks 05-18-2009, 06:10 PM received and installed a red light today!
it's cool. or, should i say, hot?
I was able to hide the wires very well. I actually put the button on the top of the ac bracket next to where it bolts on. easy to reach, and you can't see it at all.
i really don't know when i'm going to need to use this, but i'm having fun turning it on and off in the dark!
thanks, lebren!
Lebren 05-18-2009, 11:28 PM I just cant believe how fast it shipped! I used mine this weekend during my routine oil change. Makes it much easier to see the filter; I was having some difficulty removing the filter because I put it on way too tight last time. You will be using this way more than you may think, I use mine weekly EVERY time I check my oil!

Banner 06-07-2009, 11:20 PM I just bought this car yesterday, and I have to say this will be my first mod. This is really a great idea, checking oil at night is always a PITA, and with this car you really do need to do it. That or get an electronic dipstick to do it for you.
My order is in the mail...
Lebren 06-08-2009, 12:19 AM Banner, I'd like to be the first to say welcome to the RX8Club forum while I am honored to have your first post! As an update I am still working on the dual engine bay light, just been working heavily on getting my CNC mill ready. I have decided to name the Dual engine bay light the Dually because I really like dually trucks and it represents the light well! Here's a funny pic I came across the www's:
http://www.customduallytruckaccessories.com/images/cool-dually-7.jpg
Thanks for your ongoing support folks!
Joe RX-8 06-09-2009, 04:39 PM Is the switch an on-off one, or a timer-type one (i.e., press it and the lights stay on for 30 seconds)?
Lebren 06-10-2009, 02:36 AM Hey Joe RX-8! I ultimately decided on the push on/off type switch for it's ease of use, whenever the light is needed just push the button. The Dually also uses the same type switch, with the added benefit of the color of your choice as the secondary color. Thanks!
Banner, yours shipped today and should arrive soon!
JinDesu 06-18-2009, 07:35 AM Can the fuse be covered again after this install? I assume yes, but would like confirmation.
Lebren 06-18-2009, 11:20 PM Absolutely, the fuse fits and everything is fully functional, just install as seen in pics (and per instructions that are included) Thanks!
Lebren 06-25-2009, 12:50 AM Please help me welcome my newest dipstick light, The Dually! Original dipstick light still be available upon request.

psuicyde king 08-01-2009, 05:42 PM can anyone summarize the offerings at this point? ;)
I want a light, but I'm confused by all the options!
Lebren 08-01-2009, 09:36 PM Hi, and thanks for your interest!
There are 2 lights offered (as of now:) )
The Dipstick (Warm White preferred but colors are offered Cool White, Red, Green, Blue) mounts under the AC Bracket shown in earlier pictures and is VERY useful when checking the Dipstick and replacing the Oil Filter.
$29.99 Shipped in US
The Dually (Offered with Warm White, & your choice of Color Cool White, Red, Green, Blue, Violet) a hood mounted light, provides light as seen in pictures above, covering the entire engine bay + a second light for show with the click of a button.
$49.99 Shipped in the US
If you only want a single white light to mount on hood, that can be arranged also! I cannot emphasize how easy these are to install, directions are straight forward and make the install a breeze.
A LEBREN decal is included with each purchase!

c41250n 08-03-2009, 05:27 PM any pictures of how you wire it?
Lebren 08-04-2009, 12:46 AM Pictures of Dually Install can be found HERE (http://www.rx8club.com/album.php?albumid=1125) The Dipstick light is very simple to install, everyone tells me they take 15 min and the wiring is very well hidden! Give me a little time to get some more pics (see page 1 of this thread for some) THANKS!

JinDesu 08-30-2009, 10:32 AM Here is the pictures of my install. It's pretty bright at night, and very very useful. And thanks for the decals! I'll get the endlinks sometime as my next buy :)
Lebren 08-30-2009, 03:37 PM The cool white looks great for the Diptick! I also like the decal location, thanks for representing!
xun4gvn4everx 08-30-2009, 03:40 PM That rear LED is hott!! To bad I'm putting on my body kit so I won't have a place for it
Lebren 08-30-2009, 09:50 PM this is true, it probably would be a bad idea to dremel a rotor shape to fit the accent/light. although that would be extreme hottness! Thanks for the positives!
Lebren 09-29-2009, 12:08 AM Official LEBREN website is up, you can check it out www.lebren.com

looks really good =] i like the picture at the bottom ;D
UnstoppableDrew 09-30-2009, 08:32 PM I LOVE my dipstick light. Piece of cake to install, and I used it the very next time I checked my oil. Even in the daytime there's often not enough light to see that damn hole, but there's no mistaking it when I turned on the light. You seriously need to buy one of these if you haven't yet.
/no affiliation with Lebren, just a very happy customer.
Lebren 09-30-2009, 10:20 PM Thanks UnstoppableDrew! The Dipstick Light is more than a flashlight, and very durable to heat by design. Backed by great customer support, it's all win for only 30 bucks!

The Reverend 10-29-2009, 12:35 AM Alright I cave, I will take a dipstick light!!!
Lebren 10-29-2009, 12:37 AM good timing (and price!)
BLUR3 10-29-2009, 02:24 AM I don't get it... too simple for 22$. um how about lighting the entire engine bay insted, just sayin... guess I'm sounding like a hater here but, I've never needed to check my oil in pitch black conditions. automatic switch and a hood mounted light for the entire engine bay would be nice I guess. anyway, rock on with you're badness
\\Konig\\ 10-29-2009, 02:28 AM are you sure youve checked your oil? it doesnt have to be pitch black outside to make it hard to see the dipstick hole. even in medium lighted conditions it can be hard to see!
Lebren 10-29-2009, 02:46 AM That's cool BLUR3, I completely understand you've never been there. A lot of us have, and it's impossible to light the entire engine bay + dipstick area and see what you're doing as Konig mentioned in moderately lit areas.
I do make a light that illuminates the entire engine bay, drawback is it does not light up the dipstick area. Can't have your cake and eat it too.
For $22 you get the best LED's money can buy for this application

quality hand assembled craftsmanship

mkztg 10-29-2009, 09:34 AM I got mine in the mail the other day. I will have time to install this weekend. Thanks Lebren!
Lebren 10-29-2009, 09:08 PM Awesome! I'll be sending out all shipments this coming up monday!
mkztg 10-31-2009, 06:57 PM Lebren,
Works GREAT! I didn't attach mine "exactly" the same way but you would have to look close to tell. I put the on/off switch up closer to the firewall instead of at the end of the bracket and I brought the ground wire around from the front instead of over the back side of the bracket.
The hardest part for me was routing the wire. I had my son hold a flashlight so I could see better while routing the wire up to the fuse box.
Very simple but does the trick. No more fighting to see the damn dipstick hole anymore. Thanks!
mkztg
Lebren 11-01-2009, 05:55 PM It's all about how you'd like it! I made the switch wire a little long for this reason, some have requested shorter or longer wires but that's the beauty in a custom light.
The price has gone back to regular, I'd like to thank everyone who took advantage of the killer price of only $22! I'm working on improving the assembly process and hope to improve efficiency to make these.
Glad you love it mkztg!
fyrstormer 11-04-2009, 01:44 AM Are those LEDs encased in plastic or are they the SMD type that need to be mounted to a metal backing plate? If the latter, how are they heatsinked to prevent overheating during sustained use?
Yeah, I'm also a member of CandlepowerForums. :D:
Lebren 11-04-2009, 03:17 AM Hi Fyrstormer, glad you asked! The Dipstick light is regulated with a current limiting resistor, the entire circuit uses 100mA @13.5VDC and generates some heat... while these LED's are being driven conservatively as their max is 120mA.
The Nichia Superflux LED's are well suited for this application and while probably the most expensive of superflux choices (warm white with best bin/Rank available) it's well worth it in an environment that gets as hot as our engine bays! I've run mine and driven for an entire day including 2 spirited runs lasting over 20 minutes each and the light enjoyed it as much as myself. This light is bulletproof!
There are limitations to the Superflux such as the wattage limitations but the advantage of self encapsulation supersedes this when fluids are involved. I apologize for going overboard, I'm very passionate about LED's :) Thank you for your time!
fyrstormer 11-04-2009, 01:52 PM Nope, that all makes perfect sense. Here's an example of my own interest in LEDs:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y186/deusexaethera/flashlights/CIMG3299.jpg
b'Eight' 11-04-2009, 04:40 PM Received, installed, works great!! Sweet little light. Great quality, easy to install and well worth the price given the convenience. Thanks for a good little ingenuitive product!
G-ReX 11-04-2009, 08:02 PM I got mine and finally got around to getting it in. Works beautifully! It'll save a lot of random stabbing at the dipstick tube. Thanks!
Lebren 11-04-2009, 09:54 PM amazing little guy isn't it!
Fyrestormer, Awesome selection, looks like luxeon emitters... but those aren't the luxeon pucks I remember. Ive designed some colminators for portable use, with the right lens design you can create as much light as an HID or Halogen bulb. Sweet torches! Are you running Hayes disk brakes on your bike?
Here's one of my early designs (2002)

wankelbolt 05-04-2011, 11:32 PM Just wanted to come back here and say I love my Lebren dipstick light! :ylsuper:
Still works brilliantly, no visible loss of brightness, switch works great, adhesive still holds fast. That last bit is pretty amazing. You picked the right sticky stuff to survive in a hot engine bay. And I love that I can leave it on and forget about it for days and it doesn't even dent the battery charge.
In case you missed it the first time:
