View Full Version : Royal Purple
White_Shadows 03-12-2009, 04:30 PM Just because I dug for this and couldn't easily find it. I'm sure it has been listed, but it is probably burried somewhere 48 pages into a 150 page thread.
http://www.royalpurple.com/faqs-rotary.html
There is the link for Royalpurple telling you to use their oil and it is not only ok, but GREAT! Also print it out so when "Mazda of crappy city name" says you voided your warranty for using synthetic.
Just tried to put this up because every third thread asks about royal purple.
risky business 03-12-2009, 04:46 PM interesting
AAChaoshand 03-12-2009, 09:33 PM I use Royal Purple in my Tranny/Differentials, never thought about engine oil. Didn't even know they make it.
Jon316G 03-12-2009, 09:35 PM I've been using RP (5w30) as my engine oil for awhile... no problems.
AAChaoshand 03-13-2009, 10:57 AM Next oil change I will give it a shot then. I will have to order it online since I was lucky to even find the 4 bottles of RP at autozone.
White_Shadows 03-13-2009, 02:58 PM If you have a Kragen out that way, they carry it (or at the least can get it ordered for you) Murray's on the east coast was where I got it out that way. (I just hate ordering stuff online, keep the locals in busines is always better)
FallenAngelHIM 03-16-2009, 10:11 PM Another good oil thats up there with RP is Motul or Total. The FIA road racers uses it in their race cars. If its good enough for them, it's good enough for me.
Jasonawojo 03-16-2009, 10:17 PM I've been using RP 5w20 for 20K miles now, and all is good. I order mine online from americanmuscle.com, free shipping and no tax with me being in fl. Was cheapest @ $7/qt for a while, but they recently raised it to $8 so not sure if it still is.
StealthTL 03-16-2009, 10:18 PM Motul or Total. The FIA road racers uses it in their race cars.
Do they use it?
....or just have a sticker on their car?
They also advertise Red Bull, but there's no guarantee they put it in the sump.

White_Shadows 03-19-2009, 05:43 PM ^ Versus Royal Purples claim that the race drivers ACTUALLY use the stuff.

alz0rz 03-19-2009, 11:05 PM /\ that is..
anyway, i've been using RP 5w30 for 12,000 miles now... and she's as giddy as ever.
05rex8 03-19-2009, 11:54 PM this link is found in one of the oil threads that RotaryGod posted a while ago. In fact I just posted it in a thread yesterday.

9krpmrx8 03-20-2009, 12:47 AM My first motor saw nothing but synthetic and failed at 22k. My second motor has 77k on it and has seen nothing but Castrol GTX 10W30. But I can only speak of my own experience. I'm sure some of the "experts' will chime in.
05rex8 03-20-2009, 12:51 AM not all synthetics are created equal btw.
oh god, I am not getting sucked into this.....:lol2:
9krpmrx8 03-20-2009, 12:53 AM Yeah I was using Mobile 1.

And I have had 3 engines replaced, in 50K, and the dealer has done all my oil changes with ...... conventional oil.

Oh, and maybe you didn't redline your motor enough.
alnielsen 03-20-2009, 11:50 AM Oh, and maybe you didn't redline your motor enough.
Your quoting yourself, but I'll assume your talking to me. You have no idea how I drive. See my sig, I do know about rotaries.
9krpmrx8 03-23-2009, 12:51 PM It was an attempt at being funny. It's the first thing people say when rotaries die. I know you have been an avid rotary owner. It just annoys me how people buy into marketing BS.
nycgps 03-23-2009, 01:15 PM except guess what the man himself told RG specifically not to use at 7stock 2 or 3 years ago
My Last oil change was Mobil1. 0w40
See if my motor will blow in 20-30 K miles. Im on 48.9 K right now. :)
maybe the guy behind rotary was talking about Mobil1 was the cause of motor failure 30 something years ago? lol

Dude, I don't even understand what this sentence means. Can you translate?
FallenAngelHIM 03-24-2009, 10:26 PM Motul or Total. The FIA road racers uses it in their race cars.

They actually do. I know the NAARA Viper Racing League guys use it. A lot of guys at NASA and SCCA use it.
I know because I go to the track and road race with some of those guys and that's where I picked up the habit.

Gotian 03-26-2009, 10:53 AM Here is my take on royal purple as i have used it for 2 and a half years on the 8 and just switch to quaker. Royal purple is great for when your about to go to competitions but as a use for daily driving its not so great. what i noticed was that everytime you cold start the car the engine is completely dry, there is no oil in there and it eventually creates a very noticable ticking from the engine and the ticking does not go away till you have been driving for about 30 minutes afterwards. The oil composition seems to be too thin for the 8 and might cause problems if used for a long term.
I currently have 50k miles and have used RP since the first oil change but now i prefer not to because i worry of the engine being damaged from everytime i cold start the car. But after I switched to a different brand of synthetic i no longer have that fearful ticking and the car seems to appreciate it more and run smoother.
Also another thing is RP is around 40 dollars for 5 quarts after taxes while the quaker state synthetic is 20 bucks at walmart and during these times that 20 bucks in savings can help pay for gas for a week which i appreciate very much.
