Why would it hurt your engine?

TheBurkeMan

The answer is you can do it. But unless you like throwing down a ton of money on performance tires ($800 I had to two weeks ago) I wouldn't advise it.

Sure maybe a corner here and there, but anything you do to the car will shorten it's life. This is definitely not good for it. Clutch and tires esp will feel the impact.

Ya I was just wondering if I drifted a corner if it would hurt anything other than my tires of course

you'll crash, your insurance will go up, and it will hurt your wallet.

Not if you're good.

and by good i mean, knowing your limits and never surpassing them.

TheBurkeMan
03-11-2009, 09:31 PM
yeah there's one problem with that...the only way to know your limit is to surpass it, and that usually ends in disaster

Get a FC and learn in that. Then move on to building up your 8. Check out some local drift events or try to find some under ground sites.

Drifting is a very unnatural thing for any car to do. Its easier to do in some cars (RWD for instance) but no car is 'meant' to drift. Drifting is a form of racing. And like racing, it will hurt your car eventually and break your weakest link. Whether its your clutch, your transmission, your engine, etc. And be prepared for your maintenance bills to double at minimum (brake bads, tires, gas, coolant, etc, etc). Racing costs a lot of money. If you don't have it, don't do it.

Even then I would not call it safe on public roads. you can be really good but it is definitely more dangerous and harder on your car than not drifting.

Guess I'll throw down my 2 cents. Will it hurt your engine? do you have proper fluid levels? If the answer is yes then you most likely will not hurt your engine. you may hurt a few rocks and possibly a snake or squirrel though. think of the animals and rocks.

Since you are asking, no it is not safe. It will however earn you mad respect from your local street crew when you totally destroy your car while attempting to drift.

you'll crash, your insurance will go up, and it will hurt your wallet.

GOT THAT RIGHT!

Go to a drifters track event. Do it there.

who said anything about public roads? alright, maybe i said a little about them.... :P

but to the second thing you said i say this..... driving your rx8 is harder on the tires then them sitting there...... but you still drive it dont you?

i bought the car, to slide the car.... and then put sticky tires on it to go around corners like a mofo. 9.5k was nice too.

no just sitting there the tires will develop flat spots which wont happen if you are driving it. its must better for the tire to be driven.
