View Full Version : Reading about all these problems...
melikeRX8 12-18-2003, 07:49 PM ..is making me nervous!!!!
I'm in the process of buying my RX-8. I have the money ready, the insurance, the snow tires and all this talk about RX-8 problems is starting to scare me!!
I love the RX-8! Just the way it looks and drives makes it an awesome car to have. But, what's the deal with all these problems!??? I don't want a lemon!!! Last thing i need is a car giving me problems and a brand new car for that matter!!
How can I tell if my car is going to give me problems before I buy it?? Does the Vin indicate anything??
I already have so many worries and I don't even have the car yet!!!
93rdcurrent 12-18-2003, 07:58 PM Don't worry too much. I have been very happy with my car and it looks like you have already prepared yourself for the winter driving. I have only had my car back to the dealer once and they are treating me very well. They are taking care of me and replacing my whole center console over a small issue. My experience is that most of the issues have been small and only on a few of the cars.
cueball 12-18-2003, 08:05 PM Don't worry too much. There is always a chance that you might get a lemon, regardless of what kind of car you buy. Remember, there are lemon laws and a warranty if anything does go wrong.
I think you are worry too much about the problems with this car. Only a very small percentage of people are having problems with their cars, but the number seems inflated because on a site like this it is usually that the problems are posted in a much inflated number as compared to all the satisfied people (look at the satisfaction poll).
People are talking about snow tires because it is winter. Any rear wheel drive sports car should have snow tires. It is not that the RX8 is bad in the snow, it is just the OEM tires aren't. I'm sure the 350Z, G35, Vettes, etc. all need snow tires to venture out into the white stuff.
Stop worrying and just go out and buy the car.:)
melikeRX8 12-18-2003, 08:08 PM OK!!
I should pick my car up next week..Dec 26!!! Nice Christmas present, huh
mikeb 12-18-2003, 08:13 PM I've had mine for almost 5 months

I am loving it
melikeRX8 12-18-2003, 08:14 PM Any tips for a New future owner???
Break the car in well. I found that my engine was pretty tight when it was new, and the owner's manual specifies 600 miles of cozying the engine before you start to wring it out. Be sure that you do that. I actually, broke mine in a little more slowly than even the owner's manual suggested. Also, read your owner's manual, and that little plastic "driving tips" booklet. That was quite useful. Other than that, I would firmly suggest that you just enjoy your 8. It's a great car, and I love mine at 4,700 miles. Enjoy!

Break the car in for the first 600-800 miles, no revving past 5000 RPM. It'll be well worth the wait. Remember to check your oil level every time you fill up for gas. Make it a religious habbit. It might burn a quart every 1250-2000 miles, but if you check regularly, you shouldn't have to worry about things breaking.
After the engine is well broken in, make sure you drive it like you stole it every chance you get. That's what the car was made for. Rotaries enjoy seeing redline as well, it's like a pure-bred stallion, it likes to be allowed to open up with everything it's got.
Other than that...HAVE FUN MAN! It's an amazing experience everytime one gets behind the wheel of an 8. Regardless of whether it's in A/T or M/T.
My girlfriend and I have had our for about a month, 2800 miles on there, and it's no less amazing than the first night we pulled it out of the dealer's lot.

I think the best advise is what you have already done. Research your vehicle. Know what to expect.
If you did the same with any other vehicle you might be considering, you would hear they have issues as well. All first year vehicles have some issues to work through. It's a question of how well the manufacturer deals with it. Can't propery weigh the info here without gathering the same on something else.
Post pics when you get it.
Racer X-8 12-18-2003, 09:52 PM Yeah, don't flood her by shutting her down cold. OK? ;)
Congrats! Merry Christmas!
:D
rx8daniel 12-18-2003, 10:30 PM Best thing is to research on this forum about breaking in, flooding, etc. Some may still argue, but a good dino 5W20 oil (like Castrol) is as good as or maybe better than any synthetic in your rotary. I put my current miles on the car in about 3 months -it's seen little activity since the onset of cold and snow here the past several weeks. What type of snows do you have? I still have my AWD Sub so I haven't ventured into those for the RX-8 yet, but have read about an array of sizes owners are trying out! The biggest thing is to let it warm / run for 5 minutes if possible any time you start it cold before shut down. At least 2 - 3 if 5 are not possible. If I leave work from my PT job at a convenience store and then fill up, I sit and let it run before turning off to fuel for the 5 minutes. Welcome to the world of Rotary. You may never go back.
Senseny 12-18-2003, 10:36 PM Enjoy, I don't regret my decision to buy at all.
