View Full Version : How much would YOU pay for this?
JantzenRX-8 03-09-2009, 10:12 PM I'm going from a 30 mile commute to an 85 mile commute and i need a car to put some miles on so the 8 doesn't suffer. I actually kind of have a thing for 1st and 2nd gen Honda Civics but i'm not sure if i can stomach dropping the cash this guy wants.
What do you think this is worth?

BlueEyes 03-09-2009, 10:16 PM I'd keep driving your 8, realizing that it's worth ~15k, enjoy the drive and when it came time, buy another used one if I loved it so much.
REsuperD 03-09-2009, 10:16 PM for 85-mile commute you might want something a little safer. i do like these; i grew up w/ one. i especially like the 1st gen civics, but i probably wouldn't want to drive them on the highway too often

MPG's are another thing i'm worried about. That would easily be over $400 per month in gas, plus i change the oil at 3000 miles on the dot every time plus replacing 275 width tires would get expensive. I'd just rather have my 8 as a second car.

Whatever, this thing is bulletproof :) j/k This wouldn't be that safe would it? hmm...
TheBurkeMan 03-09-2009, 10:51 PM i would start at 1500 and go from there, but 2500 seems a little high to me.
romycha1 03-09-2009, 11:01 PM Wow... I really like those too, but not $2500-like..... For that much money, you could definately find something better...unless you are really wanting that car.

Well, i really like those cars but i'm not set on it. just something small, cheap, good mpg, reliable, manual tranny and not a POS.
shaunv74 03-09-2009, 11:22 PM Corolla. Or dare I say it...VW because it's the only Diesel car I can think of. Not reliable though...
JantzenRX-8 03-10-2009, 12:16 AM Corolla. Or dare I say it...VW because it's the only Diesel car I can think of. Not reliable though...
Corolla's are ugly (except the real old ones which are now for the most part collectors items). I mean obviously i'm not buying a looker but the Honda is a little easier on the eyes :)
I did consider a diesel VW but i would shutter every time i think about their maintenance issues. They're hard to find too.. wonder why :dunno:
I finally got a response from another guy selling an '82 Civic for $1200 w/ 200k. Where is the line when it comes to mileage? I feel like at 200k i'm going to be under the hood every weekend.
vndr09 03-10-2009, 12:34 AM Man idk if you like camaros, but check this: http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/cto/1063582646.html
I love old camaros especially the '82-'86 model year. Z28; black w/ silver trim, new brakes, and t-tops, I'd say for just $1900 obo go get it
Yeah that camaro would get so much better gas mileage than his 8 lol
vndr09 03-10-2009, 01:11 AM ^^good point haha. but it aint terrible compared to the 8. My 8 gets 16 mpg's average (city and hwy) and this camaro gets about 13-14 in the city
snowflakes 03-10-2009, 01:14 AM Judging by the way the exterior looks and the miles it has on the car, i say its not THAT bad, but should definitley be talked down a little bit more..
Hows the under-carriage? any rust or bad side rails?
but yeah, nice find.. i would definitley rock that, lower it, give it fresh black paint and some JMAG rims. and some tint.lols
vndr09 03-10-2009, 01:22 AM And if you're goin more for mpg's instead of pure sweetness like that camaro, go with the classic hybrid: an old Honda Insight...what'd they get like 60mpg highway???
JantzenRX-8 03-11-2009, 11:31 PM Got it!
$1500

alnielsen 03-11-2009, 11:34 PM Looks good except for the drivers seat. It looks a little messed up from one of those pictures.

I know. Its a seat cover. Either i need new seat covers or to get them re-upholstered.
rotarygod 03-12-2009, 08:58 AM My current roundtrip to work and back is about 50 miles. However after I get married next month it's going to get worse and will be somewhere around 80 miles or so. While I love my rotaries, my daily driver is a 2000 Civic. Sometime next month it should be turning over 200,000 miles. I average 38 mpg with it. It's not fun to drive but a commute isn't fun anyways.
staticlag 03-12-2009, 10:03 AM Nice!, my dad had one of these when I was growing up and we went to long trips for the military all the time in it.
REsuperD 03-12-2009, 10:54 AM wow that is cool! congrats! we had an orange one when i was growing up, and then later we painted it silver...or was it the other way around
rx 8speciale 03-12-2009, 11:52 AM 1000 dollars is the max i pay for tha car
JantzenRX-8 03-12-2009, 09:22 PM Cleaned it up today. In needs a little love but not much.
It idles pretty rough but supposedly it was just tuned up. So i'm not sure what to think about that.

Not sure if you saw the Craigslist ad but it has 73,700 original miles which was why i was willing to drop the extra $500 for the added peace of mind (knock on wood).
FreshLettuce 03-12-2009, 09:26 PM hahah take it out to a parking garage and get a nice photoshoot going on with that and the 8!
TheBurkeMan 03-12-2009, 11:05 PM i would start at 1500 and go from there, but 2500 seems a little high to me.
i would like to point out that i predicted the right price:lol:
Feras 03-12-2009, 11:11 PM is that a clamshell hood?
JantzenRX-8 03-12-2009, 11:15 PM is that a clamshell hood?
If you mean like opens the opposite of normal. Yes. The hinges are on the front edge of the hood.
dondo 03-12-2009, 11:42 PM just drive your 8 man. you'll enjoy it more. ;)
JantzenRX-8 03-13-2009, 12:52 AM just drive your 8 man. you'll enjoy it more. ;)
I actually kind of enjoy driving the Honda. I mean it's not as nice but it makes me grin just like the 8, only it's more of a "haha I must look ridiculous in this thing" grin rather than a "my car is awesome" grin :)
I just couldn't stomach the 25k miles i'd have to put on the 8 every year just for a boring ass drive down the highway :eyetwitch
Toxic Gecko 03-13-2009, 03:15 AM Nice find. Right now I drive 130 miles round trip every day in my 8. I do have another car, but the engine is currently out of it again for some repairs. When it is up and running again I will probably switch back and forth for my commute. BTW, the other ride is a modded 97 Ford Probe GTS. I bought it in 98 with 20,000 miles, replaced the engine at 120,000 miles with a Japan spec KL-ZE. I've done quite a bit to it and it is pretty fun to drive. It is not a all like the 8, but it is a torquey little SOB. The MPG isn't too much better than the 8, (about 20 in the 8 and 25 in the Probe), but whatever, it's still fun.
DOMINION 03-14-2009, 06:49 AM DD gas savers rock. Cant wait to get one

I had a Probe. I was not sad to see it go when i traded it in for the 8. It was a crappy base model that had EVERYTHING wrong with it. I probably should have kept it for this purpose but i really need to rid myself of that thing.
YaXMaNGTO 03-14-2009, 11:18 AM That thing is CLEAN. I mean, damn. That's a nice beater.
Now gut it, and throw a monster turbo on it.
JantzenRX-8 03-14-2009, 09:54 PM So WTF. I just went on a 200 mile drive in this thing and i only got 23 mpg! The guy i bought it from said he got 35 mpg it's rated at 31/38 so what is the deal?
He just had it tuned up so it has new plugs for sure, the plug wires and coil pack looks fairly new, the air filter is new, oil and oil filter was just changed. The only thing physically wrong under the hood is the air intake tube that should run from the front grille to the intake. So it's probably sucking up hot air but 12mpg worth of hot air?!
I stopped at a weigh station and it weighs a whopping 1920 lbs and i boggles my mind to think a car weighing that little only gets 23 mpg.
Any ideas? Maybe i need a Tornado... :lol2:
YaXMaNGTO 03-14-2009, 11:17 PM ^^^ Apex seal? That'll be $5. :D:
kersh4w 03-15-2009, 11:50 AM it should get better gas mileage.

I've had mine for too long and put too much into it to have traded it in. I might get rid of it someday to someone who knows what they are getting. I have hardly driven it at all since I got my 8, but like I said it was in much need of some TLC. It is in the process of getting it now.
As for your MPG issue, have you checked the O2 sensors and the cat?
JantzenRX-8 03-15-2009, 08:23 PM As for your MPG issue, have you checked the O2 sensors and the cat?
That was the next thing i was going to check. I have a really honest mechanic i might just take it to for a once over. See what all they think is wrong with it.
