View Full Version : Greddy Cat-back Exhaust Info

GReddy just received a shipment of their New-Release SP2 full stainless steel cat-back exhausts the other day. You can contact your local retailer for more info on pricing, etc...

I've had the exhaust on my car since Aug. 9... the day after I purchased the RX8, so I can't really comment on the effects it has had over stock.

If you're in the Orange County, CA area, one or two of you are more than welcome to take a test drive and post your opinions - it is my only power modification to date. PM me if interested.

Aren't those pipes awfully close to the plastic? Wouldn't enough heat deform them?

That was a worry I had at first, but one I've long dismissed... there're no scars, pits, or mars on the surrounding plastic of any kind. However, the exhaust temperatures have made the tips turn a tinge of gold... something you'd have to see in person.

So far I've done 6000+ mi. of driving, to include two 19-hour no-rest road trips from Los Angeles to San Antonio and back.

is it CA street legal or an off-road only unit? I heard exhausts had to be under 85 dBs. Out of curiosity, is the unit made in the US or Japan?

dont kill the messenger if im wrong but i think its 93 db is the limit

shawrf1
12-01-2003, 02:47 AM
They're manufactured in Japan. As a cat-back system, the SP2 exhausts conform to decibel limits under 95dBa... IOW, they're CA street-legal.

the tips are ~4.5" diameter.

Here's a sideview of sorts:

yeah, that is pretty loud - but that was the catback AND midpipe. So, if you're looking to use canzoomer's stage2 tuning, that's the type of volume you can expect. A bit much for my needs, but RP knows their stuff and I have no doubt that theirs is a well-tested and superbly-matched setup.

In case anyone misses the point that this is not a street-legal cat-back system, be sure to read the small print:

"This pipe eliminates the catalytic converter. As such, this pipe is sold only for off-road or racing purposes."

It'll void your warranty. Does sound nice though...

Yup. Saw it in person today. I like it! Good thing tomorrow is payday! :D And the installer is 2 blocks from work. Even better. Plus the guy is giving me a great price on the unit. I like the oval shaped tips and the slight angle cut on the side. I hope it sounds as nice as the HKS did. SHould be quiter than the video posted since I wont be removing the cat anytime soon.

Thanks Alex! If anybody needs to buy a hard to find exhaust, just let Alex find one for him and buy it when he lets you know about it :D

Welp, I got it! Weee!

First impressions, the tips are pretty big once on the car. I do like the shape on them, they are just a triffle large. Sound however, is MUCH improved. Sounds very similar to the HKS, although it's got a slightly deeper rumble when idle or low throttle. Closed windows it's barely there until you hit it. With the windows open it's a little more noticeable. It's nowhere NEAR as loud as the previous greddy clip posted that had the test pipe as well. I only have my film camera handy and I snapped some pics. Soon as I find my digi cam I'll get some more :D

So hopefully finally this weekend we'll get the new HKS and Greddy clips up.

Pics I took at instal where with a reg camera. I am borrwing the in-laws digicam tomorrow tog et some pics up then as I still have way too many pics on the roll to just develope it for 3 pics :D

After I saw Alex I promptly cruised on the turnpike for 40 miles and at cruising speed (85MPH) it is barely there. You CAN hear a slightly louder rumble if the stereo is off, but any music drowns it out so it isnt anoying. You can also feel the grumble a little more in the pedals. All in all I am VERY happy with it. I felt like maybe there was some extra power there, but it was very slight IMHO. I would beleive 8-9HP as vivid stated.

ok I got my GReddy Street Performance cat-back exhaust system today and I am stoked! Here is what I got straight from Trust Japan. Got it at 5pm, installed right after! Box is flat, and quite wide and long (like if you shipped a painting on canvas).

1) Greddy Dual Muffler with dual tip exhaust w/ Greddy embossed tip
2) Cat-back piping to the muffler. (Attaches to the resonator flange)
3) Greddy Warranty, Trust warranty, Survey, 2 Nuts, 2 Lock Nuts, 2 Bolts, 2 Washers, and 1 Plastic Metallic Greddy "Exhaust System" badge.

All nicely packed in with good cushioning from foam.

Initial Impressions - The Tips are quite big, about twice the size of the stock ones, and have a little lip on the edge. Chrome silver finish with nicely welded connections that gleam different colors such in the light.

Install - A TOTAL Bitch if you do it yourself with Jackstands and a Jack... let me tell you it took approximately 3-4 hours to do this install - but its worth it! The rubber hanger holders are totally annoying. HIGHLY suggest letting an exhaust/muffler shop do the install for like $60 cuz its worth it! UN-INSTALLING THE STOCK EXHAUST SYSTEM was the worse part, installing the GReddy system took approximately 30 mins. A real simple bolt-on procedure.

Some TIPS FOR INSTALL - Jack car up as high as possible. Take the black rear section that holds out the exhaust tip and rotary crest on the rear bumper off. The little clips that hold it in are very annoying - suggest using small screwdriver and plyers to take them out. WD-40 or Valvoline lubricant can aid in the seperation of the hangers and the hooks that hold the exhaust up.

1) Need 17mm deep socket
2) Socket Wrench
3) Flat Head Screwdriver
4) Plyers (needle nose)
5) Grippy device
6) Shop Light
7) Jackstands/Jack
8) Creeper
9) Protective Glasses
10) Gloves
11) Friend helps too!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK THE BORING PART IS OVER! (just want to be thorough!)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

DRIVING TEST
Cold Start - in California weather - night, approx. 11pm coastal area with light mist and about 60-70 *F temperature. Hilly to Flat. 2004 RX-8 STOCK with GReddy SP Exhaust. 2 passengers. 6 speed transmission. 7500 miles Odometer reading.

From the start I could feel an increase in power at low RPMS meaning under 3500 rpm, then there is like a "dead" spot at about 4000-4300 rpm, then as the secondary ports open up and the 2nd intake tract activates at approximately 4500 rpm, you can feel the increase in performance all the way to 9000 rpm. Not like a huge increase but a nice little nudge, not a head snapping jolt.

Sound is pleasant to say the least. Low pitched tone with a nice little woosh when shifting.

Idle is slightly louder than stock, with a nice hum.

Regular driving and shifting under 4000 rpm, nice sound, but not a roar at all, conservative and inconspicuous but louder than stock.

Spirited driving very loud and roars after the ports open up. It sounds like a real race car. Not like a cheap exhaust muffler or system, sounds very "racey" for lack of a better term. When I got to higher rpms after around 6000 rpm, the car pretty much is where the sweet spot is for this exhaust. The performance is really felt in my opinion and for some odd reason it seems to climb to 9000 rpm a bit quicker than normal even with a passenger load.

RICE FACTOR! - My friend used to have a riced out Accord (which he admits is riced out) and he says the GReddy SP Exhaust it doesnt sound ricey at all. And he should know since he is the king of rice! And has been in the import scene for years and knows what "rice" sounds like.

Driving down the infamous Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) in California coastal parts was awesome with this mod. Not only did a brand new Brabus Modified C-Class Mercedes-Benz want to race me, but it turned heads, and people were doing the booty call beep with their alarm at me. Definately adds to the look of the RX-8 from the rear and sides. The tips are large, but they do not look stock, nor flashy.

Why did I buy this exhaust?
Excellent price, its JDM, nice look, excellent performance gain, reputable manufacturer and quality, and its legal emission and decibel wise. It meets all my quotas for an exhaust and it came through with flying colors!

Sound - 5/5
Price - 5/5
Performance - 5/5
Appearance - 4/5
Quality - 5/5

The rubber hangers are easiest to deal with if you spread silicone grease on them. Try to keep it off your hands though, as it will make it hard to hold on to anything. BTW, the silicone grease stops the rubber from aging (hardening) and extends its' life.

the goldish tinge I believe is part of the composition of stainless steel. If you take a look at other stainless steel objects a goldish tinge as well as silver, purple, green, yellow are visable. I believe its just a characteristic of manufacturing process of stainless steel or the components of its material nature.

What happened to Trust Exhausts? I can only find Greddy... I know they are the same, but I like the "Trust" name better.

I installed the Greddy this weekend. If you are not on a lift, it can be tricky getting the exhaust off. I could not get the pipe off that runs up towards the cat and had to take off the plastic exhaust openings to get the tips to slide out so I could get it off. The Greddy weighs about 5 lbs less than stock. It is LOUD. I have no resonator so it is quite loud. Much deeper tone, no more raspy, tingy sound. The vibration sound is totally gone too. I had a vibration tingy sound from 4K-5K and that is totally gone. The ground wire is still an issue. Not sure what to do with it yet. I wrapped it around one of the exhaust hangers for the time being. I am going to try another video soon.

I did mine about a month ago, very easy to come off after I removed the 5 hangers and the plastic around the exhaust tips. As for the ground strap while mine ran fine for three weeks without it I figure Mazda put it there for some reason so yesterday I put it back using a clamp similar to this one around one of the mounting struts. I attached the end of the grounding strap to a small section of steel attached to this clamp. I will add a photo of mine later tonight.

EDIT: Pic of what I used.

This website has video and audio for a couple of the available exhaust systems. It helped with my decision, now to come up with the money.
