View Full Version : Lent: What did YOU give up?

Let me preface this thread with a few things:

1) this is NOT a thread to discuss your personal views on this religion, it's practices, or your religion.
If you have questions about Lent, I'm sure one of us can help answer them.

This is a SIMPLE thread with a simple purpose so lets keep it on track. I just figured it would be interesting to see what people gave up and whether they've been able to refrain from cheating. :lol2:

I'll start off: I gave up coffee and ALL alcoholic beverages.

The coffee thing shouldn't be too hard to give up, but the drinking will definitely be much tougher. I'm the kind of person who enjoy a good wine with certain dinners or a good Margarita after a long day at the office.

I think the hardest part will be when I'm out with friends to resist the urge to order a drink. Already happened to me last Friday at the bar; you have no idea how lame it was to order a coke when all your buddies are drinking.

Didn't give anything up. I have no willpower.
I'm also an agnostic Buddhist so lent's not really my thing.

I did try not cursing for a few days a while back though. Lasted about an hour till I failed miserably.

i also gave up all alcohol and had a nice little exchange when ordering an OJ at a st. pat's day gathering yesterday. i gave up desserts and junk food but don't really have them much anyway. the alcohol will be my biggest challenge.

I was raised Catholic and half the fun was figuring out the special dispensations.

Are there rules of what you can or can not give up?
Why wouldn't people just choose something easy to live without?

Or are you supposed to make it hard on yourself?
Is it meant to signify some suffering that happened in the bible?

damn I'm off alcohol too. I actually started 2 weeks prior to Lent. So mine will be over 55 days without alcohol.

So far so good. Went to the bar today and last friday after work with my coworkers. Both times I had just an iced tea...We'll see how long I can last...

Rgl: no real "rules" behind what you can give up or shouldn't give up but it's meant to be something difficult.

yeah, it symbolizes the time that Jesus spent 40 days isolated in the desert

gave up a few things... I've already failed on a couple but it's not over yet, so the struggle continues.
But so far... no alcohol and soda but I barely drink soda as it is. It's illegal to consume any type of alcohol in Iraq but if it's available, that's why I try to stay away from the wrong crowd
also, I'm on a seefood, fruits and veggies diet.
I'm doing some other things as well bu that's between me and God

It wouldn't be a Catholic tradition if it didn't include some form of suffering. ;)

I actually did the opposite and joined a gym, and since have been forcing myself to go 4 times a week. So in a sense i gave up being lazy and out of shape, but I do plan to give that up for much longer than 40 days.
