View Full Version : Elbow Rest
80CuIn 12-17-2003, 01:11 PM It's been two wonderful weeks, and I've been enjoying my 8 with every mile.
One thing though. No no, its not gas mileage (I get 16-19 city/hwy), not CEL, no flood, no slipping/sliding in the snow. Its; where do you rest your right elbow/arm when driving? On the sill, on the arm rest, on your knee? My commute takes 1 hour each way on single lane roads, and its usually behind someone doing the speed limit (or less). For those long streaches, I like to rest my elbow someplace, be where?
Don't mean to whine, just curious if someone else noticed?

80CuIn 12-17-2003, 04:54 PM Opps. I mean left elbow/arm.

Mike, tell us how you really feel :D
8_wannabe 12-18-2003, 05:00 AM If I'm leisurely, I rest it on the low arm rest at the storage pocket. Since I'm 5'8" i can get away with it. It's a tad low but not bad. If I'm revvin', I'll put it up on the sill which helps wedge me into my seat for those tight turns. It's a tad high but not bad.
FirstSpin 12-18-2003, 07:10 AM On the armrest here when I'm resting, but I tend to drive left-handed with my hand at about 10:00 (give or take). This extends my arm and avoids the need to find a place to rest my elbow. Since you mentioned the right arm, might as well throw that one in too. When I'm in heavy-shifting territory, I tend to keep my right hand on the stick with my elbow on the console. If I have a coffee or a soda in the cosole, I don't really enjoy having my arm float above the beverage so I pull the console half-forward and rest my elbow on the front edge of the console.
carnut 12-18-2003, 07:25 AM For me, the sill is too high, but better than the lower part. I wish there were a place in the middle somewhere! I noticed this the first time I drove the car.
Racer X-8 12-18-2003, 09:19 AM I use a red brick & black duct tape on that low armrest. It pretty well matches my interior.
Not! :D
The best thing is to grip the wheel at 3 & 9 o'clock & relax your arms, so they just drape. If you drift a tad, re-adjust where, or the way you're gripping the wheel just a wee bit to correct. Changing lanes then takes no more than a slight flex of a wrist. Once you get this technique down, you won't need to put your arm down, cuz it won't get tired.
When I do though, I think I lay it across my lap and usually then, I grab the bottom of the wheel.

I pretty much do the same thing.... Drive left handed.... This keeps my right hand free for shifting and grabbing a bottle (of Coke of course... I don't drink and drive). When on a longer trip, I'll rest my left arm on the door handle part (the sill is way to high), or just drive with my right hand provided I'm not shifting, not thirsty, and not grabbing a boob in the passenger seat.
