View Full Version : LED strips for headlights?...or grille?

I know I've seen a couple people's threads about their sweet R8 look-a-like headlights and such. And I've also read that they have to bake open the headlights and do a lot of work to get them to look good. Well, I was wondering if I could save some (or a lot) of money if I went with these LED strips (http://www.virtualvillage.com/items/item.aspx?itemid=4784947&utm_source=baseusa&utm_medium=shopping&CAWELAID=243008854) and just installed them ON the headlight like this Altima: http://is.rely.net/3-99-13552-l-vjUsEfamH2TMmjqiEwKlng.jpg.

...Or imo it might be better to install them onto the grille of the bumper like this S6: http://www.fourtitude.com/news/uploads/Features/062__scaled_600_006.jpg...or both on the headlight and on the grille!: http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/audistronic/IMG_3865.jpg.

I recently got a body kit and had the foglights removed and I was wanting something to kind of replace them...

Opinions? Comments? Suggestions? I'm open to anything just lmk if you think going through with this CHEAP $5.99 LED strip will turn out good or should I go with these LED strips (http://www.oznium.com/led-flex-strips)??? Any help or info is appreciated...

I don't think the rx8 does the headlight look that well. The headlights aren't that rectangular shape of the audi.

I myself am going to do something like the attached picture with LED strips.

However, this was CKZ (http://www.rx8club.com/member.php?u=40727)'s original idea. I saw his car and wanted them. So credit is given to him, and these are his pictures.

Okay ya I think that those on the bumper look the best of anywhere else. How do you mount them on there? Just screws or zipties or what? And are they connect via 12V hardwire???

Those are pretty sick. Are yours inside the headlight or taped on the outside? And where did you buy them? And do they just connect via 12V hardwire???

Are youe leds inside the headlight housing?

x8tuner44

They are inside the headlights. I epoxied them to the inside. I bought 2 48cm strips of ebay for like $15 bucks total.

Oh okay sweet. Nice price. :) How are you getting power to them? 12V hardwire? connect them with parking light wire? ...or what?

I connected them straight to the foglights.

As for your question for me. I don't know how those were connected. That wasn't my car. I am looking to do the same thing to mine. But I am waiting for the guy to pm me back.

If I do connect these to my foglights, how do I get them to come on without the headlights? I'm assuming some sort of rewire correct??

Alexb

well how are your foglights wired?

x8tuner44

To get them to come on without the headlights you would have to rewire the foglights, but if you want them to come on without the fogs or headlights you can just put a switch in the cabin and route your wires there.

ya man I'd love for you to do that...BUT: my front bumper is fiberglass and I'd be worried to take it off and have it crack; my car would be down for about 10 days (shipping to you, worked on, and shipped back); then reinstallation of them

x8tuner44
03-01-2009, 11:56 PM
It would take 5 hours for me to do it. Just so the epoxy could settle anough to be shipped. Then it would go right out. Im sure it would be more like 5 or 6 days.

Ahhh, ya i really want to do that. But I'm not comfortable taking off my front bumper...even my body shop guy said it's a pain to take it off because it's fiberglass. Plus once I get them back all the rewiring stuff to take care of...

But I guess I'd still like to know what price range I'm lookin at here?
(Assume that there is no shipping cost at this point)

Did you have to bake the headlight to get it open? i'm new to this whole headlight concept, those LED strips on the inside looks so clean; i would like to do it to mine any tips on what i'll need to do it?

x8tuner44
03-04-2009, 08:19 PM
Yea you have to bake them. Then you have to epoxy them in there. Its a process. Or I can do it for you for $110. I have done it many times so no worries if you go that route.

Hey x8tuner i know i'm shipping these to you on Friday, and I'm excited. And I just got a ticket today for having them tinted too dark, and my body shop used PAINT tint...so he said it's permanent unless he tries paint thinner which he thinks there's a chance that he'll screw up my light permanently and I'd have to get a new one. SO, should I go ahead and let him do it? Or since you're baking them open, could I pay you extra $$$ to remove the tint from my headlights? (I'm assuming that you might know of a better way to remove the tint since you do a lot of headlight work...) lmk

Ha thats funny. I actually got a ticket for my tinted headlights to, and also for my lights being clue. He said if they were white then it would be fine. He also said, " Your lights there son look mighty fancy". And I said, " yea I know". It was just one of those moments. Idk how thick your tints are but I still have to get my lights buffed. They are dull from the sanding. I used 360, 600, 1000,1500,2000, and then 3m rubbing compound. If I had a buffer then I would finish it, but I dont. So if you want I can sand it to the dull finish, but I would probably have to take off your eyelids, or you can do that or else the sanding can ruin them or I wouldnt get all the tint. I will take pics of my headlights for you tomorrow when its light out.

Okay well first I'll see if my lights are legal (I might win a case), and if I lose, then I'll see what my body shop guy can do with the fronts...but I guess if he can't do anything for certain, then I'll keep in mind that you can sand them down to a dull finish (how do I make it undull again?).
thnx for the info

Was your tint spray tint or painted?

x8tuner44
03-05-2009, 08:41 PM
sprayed, then clearcoated.

vndr09
03-05-2009, 08:53 PM
Okay. Ya my body shop painted it. So it looks extra nice/clean compared to when I spray them, but I never actually was ticketed for the front headlights so maybe I can just keep the tint on there. But if I do need to change it, my body shop said it was permanent unless they use paint-thinner, which they said might ruin the headlights...so tomorrow when I drop my car off, I'll just get the heads from him later that evening and ship them to you. I won't worry about removing the tint at all...yet

I am thinking about doing this, but I don't have fog lights, so I'm not sure where I'd tap into...

Tap into the parking lights, which are the small yellow colored lights on the lower corner of the headlights (in that picture). Or just run a cable to a switch to the inside of the car.

If you are going to add led drl, at least change the parking lights to leds and the same color, so as to have a nice looking front instead of a weird combination of ugly yellow with a nice looking white.
