I just got done painting my stock wheels Gloss Black, due to the fact that I can't afford the Volk's that I really want, or even the Rota's I would settle with. Anyway, this was my first time ever doing ANYTHING like this and I am very satisfied with the way they turned out. I'm still not sure how they'll hold up to road hazards like loose gravel or things of that nature, but at the very least this will set me apart from completely stock 8's til I can save up for aftermarkets. Anyway, here are the pics I took as soon as I got the job done...

I'll get more pics up tomorrow. These were taken just as soon as I finished the painting, and the lighting in the garage plus the limited space I had to move around with made for crappy pictures. But these will do for now, I suppose.:)

Thanks, man. I appreciate it. I thought about smokin the brake/head lights like you suggested, but what I really want to do is tint the windows and lower it with some Tein Springs. But I think your suggestion would definitely compliment the blacked out stockies and tinted windows...

so what process exactly did you use to black them out? did you jsut straight up throw sum black paint on them? or did you do the whole firing them process

1. rinse and wipe
2. sand
3. rinse and wipe
4. 2 coats of primer
5. 3 to 4 light coats of Gloss Black wheel paint

Thanks for all the compliments... I'm really glad it came out as good as it did, i was nervous with it being my first try. I got some pretty good pics this mornin that I'll be sure to put up later on today. Also, I'll be sure to keep everyone updated on how it holds up to everything the road throws at it.

Lol I've only had the car for about 2 months, but I've got my sights set on a set of Tein springs next. Clear corners is obviously a must for Sunlight Silvers... Hmmm, seems like we have very similar taste. The front splash guards are definitely on the agenda as well.

Also, I think I'm going to take the advice of adding a coat or 2 of clear coat for a little added protection, and a little less to worry about.

And as far as spray paint, I used Dupli Color Wheel Paint. You can find it at basically any auto parts store.

Nice Job!

Did you do this with the tires on? If so, how did you get the lip where it meets the tires? I was under the impression that tires must be removed from the wheel to do this.

If you did it w/o removing the tire it sounds like a fun weekend project, especially since my stock rims are going on +5 years and looking their age.

Thanks for sharing!

Yeah I did it with the tires on. I just taped the tires off and kind of sprayed at an angle to make sure the entire lip was covered. It's definitely a great weekend project and if done right you'll be thrilled with the outcome.

yeah man, keep it clean n' simple for the time being - maybe upgrade to a full on kit later or just knight sports sideskirts to complete the all around lip kit - for now tho, the appearance package looks nice w/a nice drop. S-tech's would drop it down nice too.

Looks good. Basic and clean will never fail. Get some clear corners and some tint and your car will look gorgeous.

Thanks. So far there is absolutely no chipping from loose gravel or anything on the roads, so it looks like its holding up pretty good, even though they haven't been painted for very long.

Good job I was thinking about painting mine but I found one parked at the mall and I was disgusted mainly because the owner did a poor job but I was thinking
Would anyone think a different color would look good for the stock rims for a blue rx8? Any suggestions?

I didn't even bother with the "dish" or w/e u wanna call it. I don't think it makes too big a difference.

Just sand the curb rash spots down, should be okay.

1000 Grit sandpaper did the trick. I was plannin on clear coating but I'm really likin the semi-flat look. When I get the windows tinted I think it'll give it a real stealth look.

can i ask you how many cans of each did you use? Also woah only 2 coats of primer? dang and it looks that great? im planning on doing around 4 light coats hopefully it will look out great! Also what im trying to do is to add the rays or 5zigen extended lug nuts in red hopefully those will look sick with the powdercoated wheels.

Looks good man thanks for posting this up. I was thinking about doing this to my wheels for a long time and after seeing all the pics in your thread I finally did it on my car and it turned out great! I went with the graphite color though but I am really happy with the quality. I would post up a pic but I still don't know how to.. Heres the link to my car domain though http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3114232/3

I think i might attempt this on my car as well and apply 2 coats of clear when finished and see how it turns out. Will keep everyone updated. Should i use that wheel paint or high heat paint seeing as how the rims get fairly hot during intense braking situations

Im doing my rims tommorow but i might keep it flat black because it looks a lot better i heard. But i think that a lot of kids would mess with it if i dont put clearcoat on haha. So i really dont know what to do. Is ir reccomended 3 coats for clearcoat?

its not even funny i called all the kragens around the shop and they didnt happen to carry the duplicolor wheel coat in satin black. I then started to call autozone they did not carry more than like 4 supplies. Had to go somewhere 30min away to pick it up omg what a day. But i heard that some company bought duplicolor so its not duplicolor brand its some other brand for wheel coating which is black. Ill let everyone know with the pictures think im going to clearcoat it once or twice.

I clear coated mine but I didn't paint mine black. There's a link to my car domain above if you still want to check out the pictures. I personally used duplic color wheel paint and clear coat on mine. You should be able to find it at any Auto Zone..
