before going with cipro, i think he needs to take a look at what the infection actually is, can figure that out by looking at the pus in that swelling. Black and cipro may be right, clear or yellow and cipro is too strong. I personally am not a fan of people just using strong antibiotics as a blanket treatment for everything...this is how MRSAs happen.

give it a few days of how it's currently going. then they can just amputate the thumb.. no more pain in the thumb at least.

He sure does, he just doesn't seem like the type of guy to follow up on a treatment. So better to give a strong short term antibiotic rather than him compound his infection by not completing the dosage of a lower strength one.

mrsa, c-diff, etc are a problem but its because of lazy scared people that they spread. People not finishing courses, people wanting an antibiotic for everything never letting their body fight it on its own.

I think if it hasn't healed in the 7 months since the question was posed, something bad has probably already happened. Then again it could have just healed.
