Power loss and weird sound

I have been encountering a power loss between 5500-6500 and it sometimes makes this weird sound like banging metal or something. I have read other post with similar problems but doesn't seem like anyone has diagnosed it. I took it to mazda to have them check it out but as usual they jus ran the engine code. I do not have a cat so obviously my light is on. Mazda didn't inspect anything on my car and they said it is due to the cat. I tried talkin to a tech about it but none were there to help. I tried getting a compression test a couple months ago but they wouldn't do it because they said I had to fix current problems( no cat) in order to get that done. Can someone please explain to me how having the cat off makes the car lose power for 1000 rpms and makes this sound? Sry but i'm not paying $1600 for a new cat.

The loss of power is your ignition most likely your coils and the banging metal is detonation also caused by ignition problems or your cars running to hot. I have the same problem I’m in the process of fixing it. If I get it fix I’ll let you know how I did it.

Give us some history on your car. What kind of driving did it get, A/T or M/T, reg or prem gas, short trips to work mostly city or freeway, was it driven hard or never red lined, oil change interval, 5X20wt oil or what, pre-mix used, oil consumption, has it been flooded, what service has been done and parts replaced, miles on car, just anything you can tell us....THANKS

The car is an 06 AT, I use 5w30 GTX, change oil every 2500 miles, has straight pipe, I do mostly city driving, I have had idling problems in the summer when the car was getting too hot and the car would stall, The coils were replaced last Jan, I replaced plugs 3 months ago, you can hear the car struggling to get through the gear between 5500-6700 and power resumes to normal after 6700, I don't always hear the metal banging sound, seems like it only does it when it gets hotter. Thank You for helpin, please let me know what you think.

What octane fuel are you using? How many miles are on the engine? Have you had the dealer look at it for this problem? How hot is it when this happens(engine and out side)? You might need this "TSB" done...

you are in texas and its an AT that previously had stalling issues a now have no power in certain rpms and noises during that time. and they wouldnt run a compression test because you had no cat?

is that correct?

yea because "there are current problems that must be addressed before further inspection" so I either fix it myself or pay $1600 to get the cat from them. I'm thinkin of jus piecin a cat off for sale and put it on jus so I can get the car compression tested and what not.

Guess what welcome to the new engine club. Put your stock cat back on. Drive the car until you start having power lose and the weird noises then take to the dealer and have the service manager test drive the car with you in it. They will keep the car and call Mazda NA. Then a day or two later The dealership will call you saying you need a new engine

It could be the ports opening up which cause the noise.

Its normal.

Also chek the coils and plugs.
