I didn't realize it until 8883 miles, then forgot on the way home from Publix. I went back out to the garage, and it was at 8887. Whew! I drove it around my block until it flipped. Here's the photographic evidence. I went ahead and disco'ed the battery for 12 hours, too. I know the current rumor says 9K, but I figured, what the hey - why not try at 8,888...

Congrats! May u have many many more to come!
BTW why disconnect the battery?
Also, anything to note as the mileage goes up? Does fuel economy improve? By how much? Curious... Thanx!

There is a new rumor floating around courtesy of someone's local dealership (forgot who), that resetting the ECU after 9K miles (or 15K km) results in improved fuel economy and performance. I think it's more BS, but it doesn't hurt to try, I suppose. For what it's worth I AM aware that the RX-7's DID have a mileage switch at 20K. Do I think it's possible for the RX-8? Sure, maybe, but at 9K? I'm thinkin not (but tryin it anyway!)

I thought you only had to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes to flash it

Me not very technical...
So disconnecting the battery resets the ECU?

why can't mazda just tell us if the ECU story is true or not? why does it have to be a big %@#$ secret?

The mazda 323's also had this ECU mystery. When resetted, it recalculates everything again according to your driving style.
Going to try this on my Miata :D
