View Full Version : Pics of LED tail lights?
CarAndDriver 12-09-2008, 10:17 PM Anyone have any pics of LED tail lights at nights? The 2004-2008 tail light style. I'm looking at buying some VLED 48 SMT bulbs and would love to see some in pics especially if anyone has any side by side LED v filament.
Thank you!
krijpipudht 12-10-2008, 03:18 AM I have a spider LED for break light and 3 watt for back up and turn signal.
It is too cold out side....
I take a pix later.....
Unless you are in the same neighbor, you can some and see.

krijpipudht 12-11-2008, 11:15 PM Pixs.
Rear - Spider LED break light + 3-watt LED for back up and turning each.
Front - 8000k HID + 8000k LEDs, Europe spec fog light (yellow output + blue tint daytime) (currently having a problem http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=161524)
Sorry for the quality.
This is the highest dynamic range of my 6 years old camera could do.

CarAndDriver 12-12-2008, 04:24 PM Thanks! Those definitely seem bright enough for brake lights. Sorry bout the fog lights.
krijpipudht 12-13-2008, 02:14 AM I used to have 48 LED-SMT too.
I can swap it back real quick.
However, it is raining now.

I had 48 LEDs for a while and swap to spider for the look.
They look same to me, even spider has less LEDs.
May be they both consume same power.
Just saw this one V-Leds.com
Wanna try it but it cost too much.

Damn V-LEDs and the cool new products they are always coming out with. I wasn't going to do LED taillights because they just weren't bright enough, but I think 86 LEDs would probably do the trick. I suppose next month.
onyx8 12-17-2008, 01:57 PM wow, its hard to imagine those would fit through the hole. its funny saying you have to save for taillight bulbs, but i just may get them. lol
TheWulf 12-17-2008, 02:00 PM Those don't look like they will fit... would love to see someone try!
Aipex8 12-17-2008, 03:20 PM Those are mini-SMT LEDs so the pics make the bulb look a little bigger than it really is. The info on the bulb says that it's 3" in diameter when open. That should fit fine. They may work for the signal and reverse bulbs too (they have them in amber and white also).
Aipex8 12-17-2008, 03:28 PM Just measured my taillights and it is exactly 3" across (on the inside of the reflector ring) so it should fit perfectly. Damn, I'm going to have to get them.
Definitely won't work for turn or reverse though.
TheWulf 12-17-2008, 03:35 PM Show us some pics when you do!
That's a pretty tight fit for me still...

That's a pretty tight fit for me still...
The total diameter is about 5", if the arms had to open behind the reflector ring a bit they could, but ideally (for looks) it would fit perfectly on the inside of the reflector ring.

Wanna see it. If it fits, I will swap again.

I wanna change to this one but not sure if it fit or not.
I can't read the bulb spec. Pix diagram is too small.

They are 3" across so they should fit, but I don't think anyones bought them yet to make sure. I was going to get some but I've got suspension issues to pay for right now, so maybe in a few months.
onyx8 01-26-2009, 12:27 PM someone be the guinea pig :)

Spin9k 01-26-2009, 05:36 PM Holy $hit, those spiders could be awesome (but expensive). These work fine... look like this...didn't cost an arm and a leg...

Tamas 01-26-2009, 05:47 PM ^^ that is a perfect example how weak many LED bulbs are when used as the turn signal.
If that's how they look in the dark, imagine how much you see in bright sunlight.
I have the v-leds 48 SMT LED bulbs in all my tail light sockets and the turn signals are OK (well visible in sunlight but still not quite as bright as the stock filaments). I used to have a lesser set of LED bulbs earlier and the reason for replacing them was exactly the brightness issue.
If you get LED bulbs, get the possibly brightest ones you find, and by now the newest ones MAY be as bright as the stockers, but it's not guaranteed.
Those spider thingies look weird but actually they might be good for the round red lights. I don't think they would fit as turn signals though... but someone should try :)
Spin9k 01-26-2009, 06:02 PM ahh..ok..they work fine..regardless of what you think lol, day or night...what'd you think a pic captures the real output from behind???....the reflector makes it all ok.
krijpipudht 01-27-2009, 01:08 AM I have 3 x 3watt per LED as my reverse lights and turn signals.
They are definitely brighter than OEM filament bulbs.
Esp reverse light, they not just look good, they give a lot better visibility than OEM one.
krijpipudht 01-27-2009, 01:11 AM Alright I am going to bite the bullet. I will get them
Don't for get the pix.
I'm getting bored of 3-leg LED. (Many of my friend are also using. 2 Evo, 1 Supra + another RX-8)
If 5-leg LED fit with no problem, I will get a pair too.

Can you give a link to the bulb used for the backup light? How is the light spread pattern compared to OEM. Thanks.
Aipex8 01-27-2009, 01:01 PM These new ones from V-LEDS have 14 1/2W LEDs and would probably be as bright, or possibly brighter, than incandescent 7440 bulbs. Spendy though at $50 a pair... so $150 if you want to do front and rear signals + reverse. Yikes! But if you really want to go LED for 7440 bulbs this is the way to go. I have the 194 bulbs with just 4 1/2W LEDs and they are BRIGHT! Way brighter than a 194 incandescent.

Has anyone gotten these yet? I am very interested in seeing the final result, but don't want to buy them without actually seeing them installed first.
krijpipudht 01-27-2009, 08:48 PM Can you give a link to the bulb used for the backup light? How is the light spread pattern compared to OEM. Thanks.
Sorry, I got the info wrong. LED is 1watt x 3 per LED.
It is facing forward LED, so it would not lid up whole chamber. But it is really bright. (^^^Check my previous post for light pattern ^^^)
If you still want it to light up whole tail light, SMT LEDs would do.
LED look like this.
http://superlumination.com/images/auto_bulbs/7443sshs_a_wm.jpg
FYI. I bought a lot of LEDs for 3 cars. V-Led or Autolumination LEDs have same quality. I have plenty of them that burnt out after around 100hrs runs.
krijpipudht 01-30-2009, 11:36 PM Just got another set of LED for break light. :)
Yes it is 7-leg LED.
It is freaking huge and bright.
Take some time and practice to fold it and push it in, since it is really freaking huge!
I don't think I will swap again soon.
Here are comparison from my first LED to 3-leg LED to now.
One pix compare between 3-leg and 7-leg so you can see that new one is much brighter.
Some pix was taken a while ago.
My first setup. 48-LED SMT.

onyx8 01-31-2009, 12:05 AM Haha sweeet!! I just ordered mine!! Thanks for the pics.
Spin9k 01-31-2009, 07:36 AM Those are the best looking yet :) , but damn they're expensive! The turn signal doesn't look well illuminated (even dark), are those rear firing only? Thanx for the pics.

They are bright enough to see in daylight.
However, I need to keep the camera shutter high so that I can capture the 7-leg LED brake light.
7-leg LED is a lot brighter than my reverse and blinker. It make the rests look dim. :lol2:
altspace 01-31-2009, 07:10 PM Could you take some daytime photos. On and off?
krijpipudht 02-01-2009, 12:15 AM Well, sad for me. I have to return one of the 7-leg LED.
1 leg start to blink randomly. This is a bad sign for premature failure.
Thing is, it will be so hard to pull this giant LED out of the taillight. :banghead:
Hope I wont drop it inside the taillight. :Eyecrazy:

I will take the photo of the good one tomorrow.

Spin9k 02-04-2009, 08:33 AM simple = reliable
complex = trouble
kainis2k 02-04-2009, 10:03 AM Yeah thats pretty much the one and only thing keeping me from buying one of the spider LEDs. too many LEDs that can fail. It only takes a couple to throw off the whole setup. Not to mention the really annoying LEDs that blink when they fail lol.
onyx8 02-07-2009, 12:39 AM I just got mine in, and its safe to say, they are definitely brighter than stock!! Theses with the LED third brake light make for an intensely bright combination.
My only gripe is the fact that they are angled inward a bit, and do not fire straight back, but the stocks so the same thing. It wasnt too hard getting them in, but you do have to be a bit more rough than you would want to be with a pair of $70 bulbs.

dmc27 02-20-2009, 12:38 PM This spring's project will be swapping all bulbs to something new.
 WTF RR???? Selling those set ups yet?
laythor 02-20-2009, 01:35 PM I don't think RR wants to put in the time for those tail lights as a GB. If you search you'll find a thread about how much it cost him and how long it takes vs how much he could hope to charge for it... he'd basically be working for third world wages.
rodjonathan 08-09-2009, 11:36 PM the ring looks best and i like the 3 leg idk but imo the 7 leg is overkill can you tell the 7 legs when theyre in like a shape?
onyx8 08-10-2009, 02:08 AM Yeah dude, nothing beats RRs custom LED tails. I have to say though, i was a bit of a skeptic before i bought my 7-led bulbs, but now that i have them, i think theyre pretty awesome..next best thing to doing a full custom job IMO
