For what it's worth, I bought a cheap aftermarket wheel and had one of my old tires put on it... and put it in the trunk.

Sure, I know, it weighs a ton and takes up most of the trunk space, but at like $125 total to do it, was a LOT cheaper than the $500ish(?) for a new spare tire kit.

And surprisingly, there's still enough room in there for a decent grocery shopping if you get a little creative ;)

A new rim from the dealer will run you several hundred, even from discounted dealers here on the boards you're still looking at $250ish without a tire.

I bought mine through the for sale section by posting a wanted thread, and then checking EVERY DAY for for sale threads with people selling one or two tires here and there. I also priced the cheapest full size on Tire rack which was a viable option but if you can get a spare to match your set for 75 to 125 bucks here it's worth the time and effort. Good luck and be careful puying stuff through message boards, be on the lookout for any signs of a bogus deal.

Mine came with a spare tire in the back. I got lucky, I suppose.

I got a whole set, 4 new rims and 4 new tires TPMS and all straight take off off of a racecar for $250. Camp the for sale forum.

Ive always had one and I wouldnt ever get rid of it. My auto rx-8 already is what it is. What's an extra ~100pounds and a lot of life saver? lol

The 8 already comes with a jack, lug wrench and (in the case with the glop) a compressor. All you need is a plug kit. $4 for a basic one in a bubble pack. For $10 you can get one in its own little case.

My personal MTBF (mean time between flats) is somewhere around 10 years. I think I've gotten stuck with bad batteries more often...but I don't obsess over keeping a spare battery.

yeah I already have the kit from mazda and the necessary tool to change the tire. I was just giving him a worst case scenario.

The dead battery is a pain, hate when you turn the key and just hear clicks.

That's what a cell phone and towing is for. I suppose if I lived in a rural area with areas with not a lot of population, I'd look for a spare and give up having a trunk.

LOL, well I'm headed deep into appalachia this weekend. Alone. Nightmares of a flat tire and no spare and fix a flat not working on a sidewall puncture and a black-windowed pickup coming down the deserted backroad...

So, I made sure to get the spare tire kit when I bought my RX8.

Buying from the dealer was probably not the most cost effective way to do it, though (I think I wrote up a post ranting about it at the time).

Best thing to do is to check your tires consistently for nails and screws.

Can't tell you how many I have replaced before I got a flat.

Still want a spare. It's those long trips to Vegas where you don't want a flat.

Only had 1 flat, I think it was due to a screw, so the public works guys filled it up for me and made it across town to get it fixed. Would be crappy if I had a flat last xmas in the middle of the mountains and couldn't fix it. Sucks that I even have to think about buying 2 spare rims (1 summer, 1 winter).

That pickup could be from the local tire service place...:)

Yep - you've always got to go by your circumstances and expectation of what might go wrong - and the consequences. For example, I normally don't carry food and water in my car, but if I'm about to drive across the desert I'll load up with a bunch of water. Or if I'm hitting the Jersey Turnpike I'll bring edible food.

on ebay for 100 bucks. Include oem spare, mounting bracket and tire. I believe they are about 350.00 from the stealer.
