View Full Version : Oil Change Recommendations for a Newly Broken in Engine
Nopstnz8 12-05-2008, 09:11 PM Ok guys well recently I had to get a new engine on my 04 AT since it failed vaccum. I am about 175 miles away from completing the break in period and was wondering if you guys have any recommendations for what type of oil I should change to here in California. What about a synthetic like Redline or Royal purple 5W-30? Or should I go with non synthetic? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Dude, seriously? How about search the thousands of posts on oil recommendations. Also, it seems like you don't know much about your car since you are asking about oil...how about just take it in to the dealer and have them change the oil for you. :banghead:

Old Rotor 12-05-2008, 10:57 PM +1 on the 5w30 now and 10w40 when it heats up and if you see 100F+ a lot go for the 20w50. If you live out side the U.S. these oils weights are recommended. I think It's only in North America they ask for 5w20 for better mpg numbers and who cares about gas mileage now that it's almost a buck fifty.

Sorry but I actually know a ton about my car and know a pretty good amount about oil. I educate others on the workings of the car and the basics about oil with this car. I actually search almost all the time, so don't tell me to search for a thread with 1000 posts to find a quick answer burried in there. I've been on this forum long enough to not be a newb, so don't tell me to search because I have already read most of them. You obviously didn't read my first post since I asked what type would be best for a newly broken in engine. I didn't want to end up using synthetic and then find out later it was bad for it. I researched this a lot and keep getting mixed info about if synthetic is good or bad for a rotary. Also, I do know that you need to use at least 5w-30 for better sealing. Anyways, if you don't have any useful information gtfo because I am very busy and don't have time to go search for hours on end about something like this since everyone has different views on it.

Why?
Is it not burning generally a bad thing? It's there to lubricate. I go through a quart about every thousand miles anyway. At the VERY least I use synthetic because of it's higher tolerance to heat.
This thread could get ugly.

it is really all subjective. no quick and easy answer.. and if you dont have the time dont ask for others to do your homework.. so we are not your bitch. and if you are so busy, well dont post and ask stupid questions!!! douche!!!!

That wasn't pointed at you that was pointed at the other guy. What I meant was like you said it is all subjective so it would be a waste to check a thread I already read before. I just wanted to get what is best for a new engine to maximize the life of it since my last one failed. I don't want to use something that people say will shorten the life of it if that is the case. Also, I have read that most people like Amsoil, Redline, and Royal Purple, so I was curious if it was even worth it to spend the extra money or not. I know that the mazda half synthetic half non-synthetic isn't very good, especially since it is 5w-20. I know the owner of a local Rotary shop who changed did my 30k service and he said that he only likes either using full synthetic or full non-synthetic, not a half and half one. That is why I really wanted to know so this engine lasts much longer than the original because my original probably wasn't maintained as well as I will maintain this one.

Thanks. I plan on getting 5w-30 regardless since I don't live in a cold climate the coldest it ever gets in 20 or 30 degrees and even then it is rare that we get days that cold. The whole point of the thread was so I could get a clear answer as to whether or not getting an oil like Redline or Amsoil would be worth the extra money compared to me just getting something basic like Castrol. If not then I will just go with one of the basic ones like Castrol. Also, will gas mileage change a noticeable amount since 5w-30 is a little heavier and than 5w-20?

Renesis motor failure *mostly* came from lack of OMP rate(or the OMP is not pumping as it should, there is no way to tell). So if your motor dies. its most likely the result of Mazda's lack of OMP rate. Not Synthetic or whatsoever.

It wasn't a matter of being arrogant...just a matter of how subjective the question was. I know you have been around the block here but with that being said you should already know the answer to your question. You did say you were extremely knowledgeable on the vehicle since you help others understand the car and about oil usage in the car. But by asking a question like you did makes me think otherwise.
I am on my second motor after the break in period I changed my oil to full synthetic Castrol Syntec 5w-30. Granted it was nearing winter I did...during the summer months I have run Syntec 10w-40 and Redline 50w race oil. No ill affects on the motor have been noticed. I also run 5oz of Redline Racing 2-stroke Racing Oil on every fill up. On our race cars we run factory oil for the break in and switch to Redline 50w and premix Redline 2 stroke, those motors run awesome. And probably why your last motor failed was most likely due to the OMP calibration and most likely had nothing to do with what type of oil was in it.
Oil type and brand will always bring you different opinions on which is the best. Oh and just to clarify, I don't race...I'm a crew member.

mysql 12-06-2008, 12:53 PM I used a 5w30 dino to break it in. Then a 10w40 type synthetic with sohn adapter afterward.
04RX8man 12-06-2008, 05:43 PM (lit torch in hand)....oil is all a personall preference if u feel synthetics are better then use them or visa versa I know that the book reccommends not using synthetic(unless u have the sohn adapter) and that's what i follow but there are many ppl here that have done both.....

i have also discussed this a few times... as with swoope and nyc, i never pushed my opinion. and they may have known that mine was to simply use a reputable brand regular oil with a higher viscosity. i use 5w30 at minimum.
others may also think i'm against synthetics as they are more expensive... meaning that it gets kept in circulation longer, however thats not the case.
i bought a shit load of full synthetic from valvoline when they had a rebate that made it cheaper than regular... so that said, i put in a quart on each fill. and with this motor still being new, and its never full synthetics in the pan, there can't be any "synthetic washed away this, synthetics did that..." argument.
but thats not all. i treat ALL oil thats going in to a rotary the SAME. it gets drained at 2000-2500 miles because of the fact that oil goes thru a tiny nozzle and its wise to be sure its clean oil.
to keep this all very short... all oils break down in one way or another, so my method is to keep as much fresh oil in the motor as frequent as i can.
how is having new oil arguable?
of course, having a separate tank (sohn adaptor) for oil to be fed to chamber for lubrication.... changes the whole story.
