it seems like everyone buys winter tires with the rim aswell.. is this cause the winter tires dont fit on stock rims?

 

Stock rims will work fine, they are just expensive rims.

 

Not due to fit - the 17" are (were) much more available, in more widths and significantly cheaper than the 18" selection.

It really makes sense if you pay to have the rubber mounted every fall/spring, they charge me a friggin fortune to remove, mount and balance, and it's extra for 18" rims.

Stock is 18", some had 16" (check your tires).

I just bought cheap 17" rims for snow tires, this is my fifth winter on them and they still look good as new.

which tires do you recommend for my stock rims from tirerack but that are cheap

 

I'm not tire expert, Jim! I'm just a doctor dammit!

I looked at tirerack and they all seem to be between $180 and $200, but I'd buy local, try to get a deal on mounting/balance and install - I know if I turned up with a set of tirerack tires the shop would try and get as much as possible from the install...

In a year or two you will have paid more than the tires cost, just in mounting.

No I said buying 17" cheap alloys was the best option - they charge me 130 bucks to do one 'changeover' so it quickly pays for itself.

The side benefit is using 17" tires that are cheaper and more available.
