View Full Version : Borla Exhaust Polish/Cleaner
david borla 11-24-2008, 01:56 PM Hi,
This is David Borla from Borla Exhaust (www.borla.com).
As most of you know, Borla Exhaust has been designing and manufacturing high performance, aftermarket exhaust systems that carry a million mile warranty for over 3 decades. One of the reasons we have been able to stand behind our products with such a powerful warranty for so many years is because we have always and will continue to exclusively use austenitic stainless steel in the manufacture of our exhaust systems.
While this material lasts over a million miles and will not rust, the exhaust systems from which this material is made will build up dirt, engine residue and other unwanted impurities over time that dull the finish.
Through the years we have received many requests for a cleaner/polish that restores the finish of a Borla exhaust to the way it was when it was new but we were unable to find one that worked especially well with the austenitic stainless steel used in Borla products. The metal polishes on the market were designed to work with many different types of metal and therefore did not do the best job possible on austienitic stainless steel.
After years of testing, Borla has finally developed an exhaust cleaner/polish that is specifically designed to work on stainless steel exhaust components for cars, motorcycles, boats, trucks etc.
Exhaust systems deal with specific elements like heat cycling, condensation, oxidation etc. that create unwanted affects to the material which are specific to exhaust. Borla's new polish is designed ONLY to counteract these affects and as a result performs better for this purpose than anything else available.
This product was awarded best new product at the 2008 SEMA show

Where the heck did you guys get that 'before' picture? Yikes.
I may give this a shot. See how it compares to Old English Hot Chrome (attached).
Does this remove carbon buildup and any staining as well as the dirt/residue? And will this be available all over, at Borla retail outlets (ie. Summit Racing), or only from your site?

RK, this is Alvin from Borla.
Yes, the Borla polish will remove carbon build-up and it does a great job bringing back the original luster. Today our product is available only directly from Borla.

I do too. Im going to take the risk on spending the money to see if it will work.. the other present im giving my car is either RB header (I wish Borla had one) or some new fender vents. It depends on how much money i can make during winter break.
kainis2k 11-28-2008, 03:15 AM Keep us posted guys!
SiLVeRE8 11-29-2008, 07:04 AM had the exhaust for a while now and still loving it. post some pics of the tips after you guys polished them.
turborx8 11-29-2008, 07:43 AM Does the greddy sp2 exhaust use the same metal as the borla exhaust?

Nick - be sure if you do buy this that you take some "before" pics as well as "after" pics, so we can see exactly what the change was...oh, and then bring it over to my house so I can use it...:lol2:

This is Alvin from Borla performance. Not sure about material of the greddy but our RX-8 Borla exhaust (including tip) is constructed in T-304 stainless steel. Our new Borla Exhaust Polish works great in keeping it looking like new. Thanks for your interest!

Your RX-8 Borla tips are T-304 stainless steel and our polish will definitely help remove the oxidized surface. Follow the directions (use bronze wool for stubborn areas - it won't scratch your Borla tips) and you'll be back to the original luster!
amstarvid 12-01-2008, 04:59 PM Excellent! I would love to get them looking new again!

I'm going to order it tonight and do mine. Then I will bring it over and gets yours done.

Hey Alvin. I was going to order but shipping really kills this. $13 shipping to OH for a $20 product puts this way above similar polishes. Hot Chrome is $24 shipped and that's considered very expensive.
I know your site is set up to ship bulk items (ie. an Borla RX-8 catback only costs $41 to ship which is phenominal) but you might want to look into reducing your shippping rate for the polish.
Look forward to the reviews though. Maybe it's worth $33.

Thank you RK. There's an error in shipping and it's our mistake. It should be about $7 for you. We're fixing this and will have this corrected shortly. Thanks again for your interest. Alvin

Damnit. I knew I should have asked for Free Overnight Shipping. ;)
Ordering now. From the application vid it looks like no gloves required. That'll be a nice change from the Hot Chrome.

amstarvid 12-16-2008, 10:49 AM looks like it got the rust off, right? are you giving this 5 stars, then?
Did you use bronze wool too? I stopped by Home Depot but couldn't find any and I have no idea where I can find a boat supply store. They had some 'ultra fine' steel wool that I picked up anyway but don't want to use it unless I can verify it works w/o scratching.
Looks like it does a very nice job. Do you still have some buildup on the inside of the lips? That's the only thing I still have on mine that I haven't managed to get off with other polishes. Too effing cold to polish over the weekend but I will probably give it a shot in a few weeks.

I will say 4 1/2 out of 5 stars... let me know when you want me to do yours.

I used Ultra fine steel Wool on the out side of the tip..
For the inside i used the next step up in steel wool..
For the out side of the tip dont scrub to much just a lite over and then let it sit for 30 sec. then wipe off with a microfiber cloth..
For the inside it might take a couple times to get it clean. yes there still is some build up on the inside of the tip but it will come out, its just hard to get in that tiny space

looks great, nick - I'll let you know...although in this weather, it kinda sucks, cause we'll get it looking great and then one day driving back and forth to work and it'll look like crap again...I am really curious to see how it handles the rust I have on the tips - I have more than you show in your before pic - my exhaust is 3 1/2 years old, and the tips started rusting last winter...hopefully this will take it off, cause the regular polish I use wouldn't...:fingersx:

The material used in your Borla Exhaust tips will not rust. It's austenitic stainless steel which is an alloy also used in culinary applications. Forks and Knives have to be able to go through dishwashers for years and have absolutely no rust because rust is toxic.

See #6 here - http://www.itselemental.net/faqstainless.htm
The bottom line is, you can definitely clean your tips back to a factory mirror finish.
If not, there is something wrong and we will stand behind our warranty. Please contact our customer service department if you cannot clean your tips.
Thanks
