View Full Version : Painted my Sparco Seats DIY sorta?
ILoveFI 11-22-2008, 11:49 PM So I made a thread about the seats I bought last night so I thought I'd make a seperate one about me painting them myself after the upholstery shop I went to quoted me $350 a seat to have them re-done.
I used Dupli-color Vinyl & Fabric spary that I got at the local Kragens for $7 which was enough to paint one entire seat.
Basic prep work was clean the seats and take out all the crap that was in the fabric, after that I basically painted them as you would anything else, layered with even passes.
This is what I used

Overall the seats look good I'm almost one with the one in the pic just missing a little bit on the bottom. The fabric is a little harder right now but I think this is because I used too much paint in the beginning and it is still drying. I'm going to take a brush and scrub them down a little later to soften them up a bit.
Anyway here are some pics.

StuttgartRX8 11-23-2008, 06:46 AM wow those are old they don't even make that style anymore
bse50 11-23-2008, 06:56 AM Well done and cheap diy repair.
Now, don't think i'm a fetishist but i see some old shoes in the background. A friend of mine is a nerd collector of shoe's frome the 80's. If you want to get rid of'em i might send you his mail :)
Lol, this sounds weird to me as well!
CraigRX8 11-23-2008, 07:03 AM could you do the same with our carpet?
04RX8man 11-23-2008, 07:59 AM Yeah that worked out great and a hell of a lot cheaper than an upholstery shop....
j67345 11-23-2008, 08:45 AM Looks like it came out pretty nice! I wonder how it will wear when you start sitting in them?
CTrx8 11-23-2008, 09:06 AM just don't sit on them after being in the rain. i remember someone using this product once and they did and their pants were the blue that they sprayed on them. of course i don't know how soon after spraying he sat on them but it was funny.
RA-Eight 11-23-2008, 09:51 AM How did you keep the lettering from getting painted?
Ross_Dawg 11-23-2008, 02:54 PM looks good man... ~$215 bucks for used Sparco's? what a steal!
briann 11-23-2008, 03:48 PM Could people use that with their headliner?
Came out very nice.
&I too couldnt help but notice the shoes in the back, are those purple pigeons SBs on the floor in the first pic?!
05rex8 11-23-2008, 04:01 PM I wouldn't do it on the headliner...makes the surface rough and looks cheap. Spend money to have it done right, you will be much happier in the long run.
IMO, those seats are wicked ugly. Just because it says sparco on them doesn't mean they are cool or better looking than the stock seats. If you ever get these installed, I am willing to bet you are going to get sick of them...especially if your car is a daily driver. They can't be as comfortable as the stockers.

Tape over the lettering. :)

Probably
Yes they are purple pigeons, money cats, and some others.

I bought them because they were cheap and they fit me well (perfectly). Not to mention that I can always sell them again if I don't like them.
I don't buy things just because of marque or what people think about them. If I did that then I would have bought a 350z like everyone told me to do. :eyetwitch
Do things that for yourself, especially when it comes to your car since it is YOUR car.

im guessing this could be avoided with a couple coats of scotch-gard too
briann 11-24-2008, 01:25 PM I've always wanted purple pigeons...
what size are they? :) lol
416to212 11-24-2008, 03:52 PM ILoveFI - can you test some dyed fabric for us? I'd like to know if water will make the color run. I've used Foliatec interior dye before and it never ran it's colors even when soaked (used it on my headliner, interior bits and door inserts).
Can you confirm that the Dulicolor stuff is just as good? I mean, it's Duplicolor, it should be good stuff...
Razz1 11-24-2008, 04:03 PM I want to see the red paint on the back of your jeans.
6000pounds 11-25-2008, 09:08 AM Nice job. Seats look brand new again

Yes, I'll do that, I just painted the other seat 2 days ago and am giving them a few days for the smell of the paint to get out and for it to set correctly. I'll get a rag soak it and rub it a little bit. So far it seems like the paint is not running when i rub my hand and a brush over the fabric.
+1 on the Duplicolor being good, I used their Engine Enamel to paint my Rims about 7 or 8 months ago and they are still perfect.
perks11 12-17-2008, 04:03 PM these look nice, i may have to give this a try with my seats.
