Potenza re050a vs yokohoma es100

If you had a choice between bridgestone re050a 215/45 and Yokohoma es100 225/40 for your rx8 and both were offered to you at the exact same price of 100 dollars which will you choose and why.

P.S: I know these r different from stock size but these are the only two available here in pakistan within my price bracket. The stock tire costs 300 dollars here which is simply out of range.

If you can't find 225/45/18, can you find 245/40/18? It's similar in outside diameter to the OEM tire and it still fits well in comparison to the wheel width. You'll find the 215 tire to be too narrow.

I have just option between the two mentioned. No other tyre is avaible and/or way out of my reach.

1. Yokohoma are also not the stock size they are 225/40.
2. potenza re050 are 215/45.

Now please pick one of them.

ES100. Wider and more grip. Both should be about the same diameter.

But potenza is supposedly a better tire as per tire rack surveys and costs about two hundred apiece.

I had the ES100 on a previous car, and found it to be terrible tire. It was slick and became very noisy after some wear. The only positive was that it had a stiff sidewall, so it had good turn in, but it had poor traction.

I'd go with the Bridgestones.

Troutfisher hit it. The ES100 is not in the same league as the the RE050s. I've got the RE050PP on my car (not the 8) and it's a competitor with the Pilots; the 050A doesn't have the grip of the PPs but it's much better than the mid-grade ES100.

are you going to be tracking the car at all or is this for strictly DD? I've had the 050's before and they're pretty solid on the track... but if I were you I would definitely get the wider/lopro tires

So +1 vote for es100 I guess

Th 40 series tire will be about .8" shorter than OEM in overall diameter. Enough to create some minor speedo discalibration, but still within usable range. I still think the 215's will be too narrow.

Thankyou for the link however i had already calculated the speedometer error.
I just wated to know the difference of grip betwwen the stock, es and re050. so here is a very crude calculation from my end.

Stock Tyres: 225mm
Brand: Potenza 040

New Tyres: 215mm
Brand: Potenza 050

If we assume that the level of grip per mm of tire width to be equal for both tires then the difference of grip between 040 and 050 shall be.

Percentage loss of grip = (225-215)/225 = 4.44%

However Potenza 050 have more grip then their 040 counterpart; so i think the grip loss should be around 2%; but wouldn't I suffer a similiar loss with es100's as it is a lower quality tyre than the potenza's???
