Smile New Owner...

Good morning all,

It is with GREAT pleasure that I write this post to say I am new to the RX-8 family.

I Just picked my 2008 RX-8. 40th year anniversary up on Sunday. Trading in my faithful, reliable, fun 2006 Mazda3 GT that was between Fair and Good condition. .

With the trade in and 5k down I got monthly payments of $169.00 for 60 months. Not sure if that is a good deal or not, as buying the car was hassle free. In fact the sales guy didn’t even blink his eye or went back to “talk to the manager”… this was probably the easiest car purchase I have ever made.

The 55 mile drive home was, simply put, exhilarating. The buzzing of the engine, the sound, the feel of the steering wheel was absolute heaven. I mean, every new car feels great, but this was on a different league. The car is gray with red seats. Hot, hot.!!!

I want to thank all for the good tips I got on buying an 8, and what to look for. If you guys can think of any more good tips for a newbie, I would really appreciate it.

I live in Maryland BTW so I’m thinking of using SW-30 (let the oil war begin).

Quick question, I understand you have to redline it at least once a day, correct? Why so? I can see this is going to be tough because the 8 is so darn fast, I was doing 65 on 3rd and the rev was at “only” 7rpm’s… wowie. I’ll see if I can hit the red line on the way home today.

I promise some pics later. I thought I had them with me here at work but I must have let them at the computer at home. I just had to post here today.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you here…

Happy motoring.
Drumm..!

PS- This is my second rotary engine car. My first was a used 1992 RX-7 that I bought from a ( I hope you’re sitting down for this one…) Amish guy back in the state of PA. Unfortunately, as faith would have it, the car was totaled in a parking lot by a drunken under aged idiot approx two weeks after purchased. I suppose everything in life happens for a reason. So back to the present, this 8 (although my second rotary car) feels like the first.

The redline a day suggestion is because it helps to burn up carbon deposits in the engine. More Renesis engines fail for carbon lock than actual wear to the apex seals. So make sure to AVOID "babying" the car, thats the quickest way to kill it.

Have fun and congrats, need pics now.

Welcome to the club!

If the car is brand new you should definitely not be redlining it... but if it is already broken in (aka 2nd owner) feel free to hit the beep!

If it is a new car , check your manual in regards to the redline . You don't want to redline before certain milage.

By the way welcome ................

welcome and congrats...you do not need to redline the car everyday, just do not drive like a granny and lug the engine every day. Just open it up and have fun every so often, thats what the car was made for and it will also keep it healthy.

also, post some pics

Thanks guys.. the car is brand new. Well, it came with 340 miles, but pretty new in my opinion.

At how many miles should I start redlining this beast? I will check the manual when I get home. And thanks Edward B for the advice.

Yes, pics will come pronto..!! as soon as I get home

That's a good monthly payment imo...

But then again I'm 20 and I had no equity besides $1500 down to put on my 8. lol.

Welcome and congrats! Check your manual on the break-in period, but on my previous cars, it's been in the neighborhood of 1500-2000 miles. You said "let the oil wars begin," well let the "break-in wars begin!" There are different schools of thought on what should and shouldn't be done in a break-in period. My best advice to you would be to keep the RPM's under 6500K for about 1500 miles. That should be high enough to make sure the seals break in, but not too high for the other engine components. Most important thing is to drive the car at varying speeds. DON'T PUT ON ALL OF YOUR BREAK-IN MILES ON THE EXPRESSWAY! The worst thing you can do is break-in an engine at one speed. Every vehicle, including my Evolution VIII, was properly broken in and never exceeded excessive RPM ranges during the break-in period. I had one of the only Evo's I knew that didn't burn oil. My method seems to be effective. Good luck and congrats!!! PICS!

Besides all of the techincal info I included, I just wanted to say "enjoy!" The RX-8 is not the fastest car I've ever owned, but it may be the most fun I've ever had. This car is quick, it corners with the best of them, and that rotary is incredible. Besides, the look of this car is pure sex! So, enjoy!

Congrats

and be careful with what you read here, oil, carbon, red line, etc. Have read and benefited from this site, but there are a lot of opinions based on opinion, not fact or science. We need a 40th sticky, love mine.
