300hp, 300lb/ft torque, 6 speed tranny

holy crap! They even redesigned it, it's freakin beautiful now! Too bad there are only 1,700 coming over. If you want one, you have to go order it, and order soon.

Whats the price??

MSRP looks to be approx. $31-32K

Range has slightly varied, only because it's mostly dealer speculation. Nothing has been announced yet.

But people are calling their dealerships, and the dealers are saying $500 down to order one (none of these will ever sit on the lots, unless someone backs out of an order), and they'll charge MSRP, which they have quoted anywhere from $31-34K, depending on options ordered.

Well, Subaru certainly embarrassed Mitsubishi (at least in the United States) with its halo car. Anyways, the link below suggests a low 30s price and a production of 4,000 - 5000.

That's without a stereo (the dealer could install one for you and charge you gobs of $$$$) and a likely initial price run up, but still dam impressive (the wing has gotta go though!).

Its not completely fair to compare the RX8 with the STI, since the STI is a limited edition model, but if the prices of the two aren't that different..I could see some...cross shopping the two. What a week so far.....amazing weekend of football....we get to see the EVO..today the STI...tommorrow the RX8 and possibly _______??????? 10 more hours to go!!!!!!!!!

Let's hope the STi isn't hampered by big understeer and crap tires like the standard WRX. I s'pose the adjustable diff will help.

It'll have Bridegestone Potenza 070 (summers only) in 235/45-17

much better than the regular WRX's Potenza RE-92 (all-seasons) at 205/55-16

as for the understeer problem...well, who knows. STi's tend to be pretty neutral.

This is exactly what I've been waiting for from Subaru. I know that the Rally version makes ~300HP from the 2.0L engine, but that's a professional racing engine with very smart engineers working and rebuilding those engines all the time.

I have always thought that the 2.0L pushed to 280HP (that was the rumor) was too much for that little engine. I knew that the 2.5L was a better choice. I had considered getting an older 2.5 RS and adding a turbo kit.

Anyway, I think the choice for my next new car has just been narrowed to the MazdaSpeed 6 or the STi. Recent photos of the Evo looked terrible. Exterior styling was bad and the interior styling was boring.

From the initial reports though, the STi will be pure drivers car with little compromise for comfort. I like it but it could be too harsh for daily commuting which might leave the door open for the MazdaSpeed 6.

I'm not the type that has to have the newest toys immediately. I'm willing to wait. Though both the STi and the MS6 will be limited production vehicles, I think anyone with $30K+ buring a hole in their pocket will be able to get one. Just like the MS Protege, once the first allocation is sold out, another will be made and in bigger numbers.

Both Mazda and Subaru (and almost every car company out there) want to make a much money as possible. This involves selling as many vehicles as possible. The goal though is to sell as many as possible without leaving too many on the showroom floor collecting dust.

The STi certainly looks sweet, if you're after a pure performance option. But with no stereo and reduced sound deadening, it's not exactly aimed at the Grand touring market.

Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age, but I appreciate at least a few little comfort touches in my cars these days. Think I'll stick with the '8 :)

Forgot to mention, two of our regular local autocross competitors have already put down their deposits on STi's and put their WRX's on the market.

Wonder what SCCA classes the EVO, STi and RX-8 will wind up in.

Is this the first time the STi has been released in the US. In Australia they've been out for years. Oh yeah, you pay 30-31k for the car but think about insurance! all of a sudden, you wonder if your gonna need all that power or is it better to get an old Hemi?

By the way, there just so happens to be a red 98 WRX in my garage, but soon it'll be making way for a red RX-8, by the way, what is it with car companies and the letters 'R' and 'X'. I liked the old days when GT, GTS and SS used to actually stand for something, not just to look cool for the new generation.

Since my family invested in a WRX in 98, I've been quite the avid fan, at least until they released the bug-eyed version in 2001(?). So I'd just like to clear up a few minor issues.

1. The STi will shit on an RX-8, simply on of the line performance, the RX-8 does 0-60 in something like 6.1 seconds, while the 2000 model WRX STi did it in 4.6. Given that, the new cars do have slightly heavier bodykits but it ain't gonna mean 1.4 seconds.

2. The STi is a pure bred race car, while the RX-8 is more of a Grand Tourer, more suited to long journeys than the WRX and more comfortable, but if you want comfort and performance in a Subaru, get a B4 manual.

3. You take out that ADJUSTABLE rear wing, and your car won't perform as well. Unlike many of todays "sports" cars, the rear wing on the STi provides loads of downforce necessary for fast driving.

4. The STi will cost more than the RX-8 due to insurance prices which are related top the STi being Turbocharged as opposed to the naturally asperated RX-8. I also suspect that the RX-8 will not need the same type of petrol (gas) as the STi which will need higher quality, much like the B4 which, down here is wasted because it is extremely expensive to import which means that they sound like shit at low revs.

Hope that this has cleared up any misconceptions that you guys have.

don't worry, I know all about the WRX and the STi. I've had a 2.5RS for three years (just sold it), and I've been in the Subaru community for just as long.

This is the first time the STi has been in the states, and as you know, we didn't get a WRX here until the bug-eyed version (which was for our 2002 model year)

Yeah, that bug eyed version was totally wrong, it had the same engine, worse looks and it was heavier.
