Houston help each other out thread

I've been wanting to start this thread ever since I bought my RX-8.

I want to start a list of people who are willing to help others install mods.
Contribution of garage space, tools, knowledge, and simply time are things I'm looking for.

I'll start first. I'll update the first post so others can just PM us.

HeavyMetal699 - I can help out with hand tools(socket set, screwdrivers, allen wrenches), I have knowledge installing anything to do with suspension, axial flow short shifter, having taken a large chunk of the interior out of my car(useful for car audio or rattle hunt), and can help out on most weekends. I don't have garage space.

monstermatt - I recently got my 8 so I don't have specific knowledge of the 8 but can contribute knowledge of general automotive, electrical, painting, and welding/fabrication. I also have hand tools and some power tools, but garage space is limited. In the Clear Lake area.

Sifu - I have a couple of hand tools. I can help out with exhaust installs, short shifters, HID fogs, intake, and springs/shocks. I can do most weekends/certain weekdays.

Aaron(Local Mechanic/Rotarhead) - Has a shop that does custom fab work and painting, has extensive knowledge on RX-7's and installing custom turbo kits. He tracks his car and probably one of the best places to get an alignment. He's quite meticulous on the alignment so expect it to take a couple of hours. Also does a great job at explaining what he's doing and how it effects YOU.

If you have any suggestions let me know. I wrote this at work while working so its not very concise.

So should we post that we can help, or PM you so you can update the initial post? Because this is a great idea and I'd love to help out. Also, you've been PM'ed (just to cover my bases).

Updated first post. For those who PM'd me, sorry it took so long. I spent the weekend setting up my car.

Just wondering if any one knows
about camber wear I need a camber
kit or some thing or any ideas how to
fix the waisting of my tires. If any help
I fix wreck cars and paint I'm located in Houston
I-10 & beltway 8 east.

HeavyMetal699
11-05-2008, 11:09 AM
Are you slammed to the ground?

If you don't autocross or track there is probably no need for more than -1.0 degrees of camber. Castor might even serve you better on the street.

Unless you are severely dropped you should be able to easily get less than that.

This might be dumb but did you ever get an alignment after dropping your car?

HeavyMetal699

I was thinking the same thing. Either he's slammed so low he can't dial all the negative camber out, his alignment guys sucks, or he just never got one and committed a $800 mistake(bye bye tires).

Aaron did my alignment so if you need his number PM me. I'll gladly give it to you. This guy does an awesome job. He followed up with me multiple times just to make sure I was 100% satisfied.

I'll PM his number to both of you later today when I get home from work. I have it written down.

I'm not sure how much he is going to charge this time around, but for me it was well worth it.

SW alignment is hit and miss. I heard a few good stories and a few bad ones. They are one of the only shops in Houston that will do an alignment for racing though.

Also he might be out at HPA with his black RX-7.

hey all,

Since there isn't a Houston thread, I thought I'd post here:

My name is Thanh and I'm interested in getting an rx-8, i've test-driven one and I am very pleased with the experience.

Of course like any enthusiast, I did my homework and I'm very scared of reliability and the flooding/tranny issues.

questions:

1.) i'm trying to be prepared in case i have to take the car into a dealership. I've read only bad things about how Jeff Hass Mazda treats their warranties (basically not good).... should this be a factor when I do have to take in my rx8?

2.) any other good dealerships who 100% honor the rx8's warranty?

note: i'm not afraid of doing work myself; in fact, i look forward to knowing more about the rotary engine. so, whether it's changing plugs/coils/oil on 5k basis, thats fine, adding more oil per fuel fill up, etc. that's fine for me.

Thanks all, looking forward to replies to help me feel better about getting a rx8.

-Thanh

I would suggest calling multiple dealerships to get the best price.

I'm not sure of the best dealership in Houston, I bought mine through Munday Mazda. They try real hard, but don't fix the problem.

Anyway, its not like the car is instantly going to blow up. And if something does happen you can take it to any dealer you want.

inTEGrate89
11-09-2008, 06:17 PM
hah, yeah i know the car won't insta-blow up but this warranty business is a consideration for me.

i've found the rx8 i want through private party - stay tuned guys!

My Dad is coming into town this weekend so I won't be able to make it. I do have the updated Mazmart water pump I'm itching to install though.

Also I want to pull off my catalytic converter and take a look at it. My exhaust note has changed recently and I think my catalytic converter might be dead.

It looks easy to install. I took a look at the workshop manual.

This weekend is overwhelmingly booked for me. Only reason I'm autocrossing is because I'm dragging my Dad along too!

Speaking of which, whoever is going to autocross sign up NOW. I would not be surprised if tonight is your last chance to go.

I'm trying to decide what type of antifreeze to use. The stock stuff and some redline water wetter or perhaps something more exotic or something super cheap.

I might hit up the dealer and see how much they want to rape me for the stock stuff.

BTW, you can get water wetter at O'Reilly's.

Thanksgiving holidays is starting for wednesday for some of us.

I would jump on this but I need to go to the dealer for a catalytic converter inspection and new spark plugs.

My spark plugs are so bad I can hear them. It sounds like a gurgling noise coming from the center console area if anyone is wondering.

I stay out in Katy. What area are you staying at?

You don't sign in here, but most of the people just show up and donate. You could go on to the H-I thread and post that you are coming to the meet. Then they could see how many people are coming, and how much food to buy. Here is the info on the BBQ meet.

This weekend being superbowl sunday and an autocross weekend I don't think I can make it.

One of these days I hope to have an install party. My set of BHR coils should (maybe) get here Monday. On top of that I have a new fender to put on and a mazmart water pump.

I also have a few odd noises I need to troubleshoot. First weekend I have a chance I'm going to pull the catalytic converter off my car. It might be dying on me.

Edit: Did you get a price quote from Mazmart about the A/C fan? Ask for a used one. It might be really cheap!

Nope, but I did work at Fluor in Sugar Land for a couple of years before I started law school.

I will be interning at two big law firms downtown, Bracewell Giuliani and Vinson Elkins. I am from the area (Missouri City) originally, so I generally am familiar with the downtown area but I'll get much more acquainted with it this summer. Look forward to being back home for the summer (as far away from law school as possible) and slapping some new parts on my 8!

yeah synthetic is runnng all good for me.

full protection: fp+ and idemitsu. thats 1 dedicated cleaner, with a bit of lube, and 1 dedicated lube with a bit of cleaner.

MMO is a all in 1, jack of all trades, master of none, and happens to be the cheapest. i went this route, and put in 8-10 oz. per fill up.

not as effective as using a 2 stroke and cleaner, i can tell the difference, but its better than nothing.

Thank you. I actually had the taillights and side markers smoked out by a body shop that is no longer in Houston. The headlights I had them tinted with actual film tint. But my friend, Abraham , at Erace Performance can help you out. He smokes out taillights and headlights. He does really good work. You can reach him at 713-861-7619. Thanks .

My friend got his exhaust back then installed at Carboys. He said that they were pretty cheap.

786 motoring is a nice shop. I got my fenders rolled by them and they are nice people to deal with. I would recommend these guys since I personally dealt with them.

If you have some tools and time you could save yourself some money and install the exhaust yourself with some friends. It is very straightforward but sometimes the hangers get very annoying.

Maybe we should have another install day!

Hope this helps :)

You really should leave your car stock before you autocross it. The amount of mods you have on your car is inversely proportionate to the amount of room you leave yourself for error out on the track.

Just get some good street tires and an agressive alignment until you've got a few events under your belt.

Thanks for the input. I have done AX before in a Mustang and my Smart car (the only one at the Gulf Greyhound last month). Also have raced in the 24 hr Lemons series and been through the Skip Barber race series at Daytona and their advanced schools at Laguna Seca.

DUDE, THAT WAS YOU!?!? I've been dying to see how one of those would do at AX - looked like a blast! If you ever "rent" your Smart for AX I call first dibbs on a co-drive ;)

HERO, Heavymetal, and myself have all done our own suspensions (as well as others') if you still need help with the Konis & don't mind DIY. However, none of us have our own garages (curse you, apartments!). If you have a garage & tools, though, we'll be happy to help.

EDIT:
FYI you'll never see me at a Houston Rotary club event. I work graveyard shift Mon-Wed, therefore I'm never free to go. The local Houston RX-8 meets are generally on Thursdays, so I'll definately see you at those. They're so few & far between, though, I'm sure the next time I see you will be @ GGP next month.

I have a neighbor that de-badges all his cars. He did his porsche a while back perfectly and I asked him the trick. Dental floss he said!

Take a hair dryer (or let your car sit outside on a hot Tx day for a few hours) to heat up the emblem. Then rake dental floss between the logo and the vehicle. It cuts right through the adhesive back without scratching the paint.

Then use goo-b-gone to get off the rest of the stick stuff.

Well it is finally done! I have reserved GSS for a track day on August 22nd.

The cost is going to be 3350 to include track, insurance, & ambulance.
Gonna limit it to about 20 cars as we don't want to much traffic.
Cost will be 250.00 per person.
If we get more participants then I will refund cash to everyone.
If we get less than expected/ bring cash or your checkbook.

No bitchin' about the price if you have to pony up more and I won't complain if I have to refund some back! :)

http://www.grandsportspeedway.com/

Rules are:
1. No alcohol
2. Must have SA2000 or newer helmet (on your head!) FYI: motorcycle helmets won't work!
3. Nomex if you are in a race car.
4. Long pants (no nylon workout pants) such as cotton or jeans for people driving street legal cars.
5. No passengers are allowed unless you are a licensed instructor. (insurance stipulation)
FYI: If you want to show someone the fastest line; have them do a "lead and follow" at 60% full speed to be safe.

We have the track from 9am-5pm
Gate opens at 8am.
Mandatory Drivers meeting at 8:45 am
Gate closes at 6pm.

Some of the buildings were lost in the hurricane but they do have port-a-potties.
I suggest bringing some tailgating popup tents for shade and coolers with tons of water, etc.

For all you diehard Rotary fans; there will be rods and pistons on the track!
A few Porsche's, a Mini Cooper S, Shelby GT500, etc have already signed up!

Fill this out if you want to come have some fun!

i have a month to get a spare 250 dollars! and why is the price variable? oh and thanks! :)

Good question about the price. It will vary b/c I am forking out the 3350.00 to get it going. Then getting paid back from everyone.

If only 10 people register; then the price goes up to $335.00/person.
If 20 register; it becomes 167.50/person.

or some fractional amount as above.
Hope that make sense.

If I am the only one to register (shouldn't happen as there are 6 registered already), then I get a track day for $3350.00 with lots of room to drive and very little traffic! hahaha
