Check out this late November 2003 video clip if you haven't seen it already. These guys are trying to kill a 2nd Gen Rx-7 engine by twisting it up to 9000 RPM and holding it there till the engine blows. They think it will crap out after about 30 seconds like most piston engines would....Proof of how awesome the rotary engine truly is...

The file is like 12Mb

I was impressed by how long that motor held out. But that was wrong on so many levels.

That hurts to watch. I use to have a second gen that blew a rear rotor apex seal. I drove the car on one rotor for three more days before the front rotor died. These engines are amazing.

Never seen somethin like that...thought it would die well before that.

yes.....and this engine was badly overheated. They "forgot" to put the cap on the radiator. I wonder how long it would've gone WITH coolant in the system. It mostly evaporated away before the motor blew............they didnt even give it a chance.

I didn't get the video for some reason but, I sure got the audio:-(
Why??? I think these guys burned bugs and skinned cats when they were kids. Hurts to listen to it. Nonetheless, holy crap.... what an engine!

My only question is "why???"

The poor, poor, car.

The guy actually explained that the engine was shot anyways. Had busted a rotor from too much boost. Amazing it even made it to 9000rpm even. He had been a rotor fan for a while and even so was amazed.

A busted rotor, no radiator cap and it still managed 9000RPM with no load for 7 minutes? Thats amazing!

am i the only one that thinks that was one of the stupidest things. WTF would u do that to a car yea its almost dead, they lucky they didnt start a major fire while they were in the car.

I still have one of these babies in my garage...1988 Rx-7 Turbo II...I grew up with that car...got it when I was 16 and was my daily driver till I got the 8...i'm 30 now...so that cockpit and those gauges are VERY familiar to me and man it was hard to watch and listen to...i kept squirming in my chair...i'll think I'll drive the 7 to work tomorrow and give the 8 a rest... <sniff>

why would they do that..

what a f#$%ing moron. What I don't understand is why would they want to start the engine after it was blown.

What a waste of money too.... if I get on a late model FC twin turbo. I would rather mod it up and fang it like crazy ... I think that would be more fun.

I think what they did is fantastic.

First of all, they obviously intend to pull that motor.
I doubt they intend to rebuild that one - they probably have a built motor they are going to swap. That was only one of three RX-7s on that driveway.

Second - THEY RAN IT AT NINE GRAND FOR 7 MINUTES WITHOUT COOLANT PRESURE ON A BLOWN SEAL !!!!

Can you even fathom how tough that little 13B was?
They just demonstrated for all to see just how durable the rotary is. There is no better test than the extremes. How many of you are willing to test your motor like that for the good of all?

More importantly, how good do you feel about your 13B-MSP now?

There are so many posts on this board about "oh, I'm scared of keeping it at the red line for too long" or, whatever.

Mazda built in a rev limiter at 9.5k or so on the RX-8 because THEY KNEW THE MOTOR COULD TAKE 9.5k FOR A REAL LONG TIME!

I think we all should go outside and caress our RX-8s and tell them that we love them. Then bang the crap out of the rev limiter.:D

When I lost a connecting rod on my KL-DE, the motor still ran, but not like that!

Mazda builds some tough sh*t!

Aww.. dat was wrong..... COOL as hell though. That baby coulda revved all day long.

I abused the hell out of my old 2nd gen RX-7 engine. I had ceramic from 2 seperate spark plugs fall through the engine. It overheated twice at least. I always bounced it off the rev limiter. I had run it a little low on oil before. When an oil cooler line broke I was driving and didn't notice for a while. I lost a small screw down an intake runner and didn't realize it until the engine was started, etc. That old car was a learning experience in what not to do. I pulled the engine out at 136000 miles due to a new engine I had bought. When I pulled it apart it was in surprisingly good shape. The rotor housings probably should have been replaced but every other component including the bearings were reusable. I thought the inside of the engine would be all scarred and pitted but there were just a couple of very small lines in each rotor housing. Just barely enough to catch with a fingernail but enough that you wouldn't use them again. Wonderfully tough engine. It probably would have kept running for a long time because it even still passed emissions a month before the engine came out. They are damn tough. I wouldn't try any of that with a piston engine.

there should be a law against that kind of cruelty.....great vid BTW.

My heart goes out to that rx-7. May she rest in peace. That was simply amazing.... Now we need someone to sacrifice an old cylinder engine and put it under the same test.

I'm trying to get the video but it is not available anymore. Can you help me to get it?. Thanks

From the name of the video I'm gonna assume that's cozmos rotary. He's from Lincoln but had the car up in IN getting some work done. The engine had one bad rotor already so they wanted to see how long it would go on one rotor

Oh and I have it save already on my HD from teamfc3s so if anyone wants it I can IM it to you

edit: just downloaded...yep same vid cept someone compressed it more. Gotta love the part with the fire

it aint workin for me...

and to the suggestion of doing it with a piston, you gotta remember, not too many pistons can even make 9k, let alone sustain it

a few more edits, and it coulda lasted 15 minutes. Anyone else think this is BS? Kinda like the 'Blair 7 Project'. When I have time I'll watch it again, but a couple of things jump out at me right off the bat.......like how does the time of day magically appear on the screen after the handoff???(edit)? The sound would be easy to duplicate, then loop. and the video....c'mon it's looped at least 4 times. I had an 88 rx-7 convetible (red) and I loved the video, but I think it's a hoax.
Sorry about being a doubting Tom, just tough to believe knowing what can be done to video. If anyone in S. Fla wants to demonstrate, I'm there, but from the looks of things, it's cold where these guys were (hard to fake that), so I a'int goin' to a live recreation!!!

I think the video definitely could have been edited but in order for it to get hot enough to boil off all the coolant and catch the rear exaust on fire it had to run a while...also did you norice the fuel level? During the first 2 seconds there is a little less than 3/4 of a tank...at "warm up" there is EXACTLY 1/4 tank, when the engine blows there is a little less than 1/4 tank. I think it ran for a while but I think it may have been edited....

Here's the thing...I agree it was edited. But was it edited to greatly exaggerate the durability of the 13B? No...it does exaggerate it to a degree though. I don't think it's complete BS, reason being is that Bottle Blown Racing.com had an old FC on their SuperFlow Chassis dyno a while back. They rev'ed that thing up to 10k RPM because it kept making power. The tech wanted to rev it even higher because it was still slowly climbing on power, but due to lack of cooling in the shop, and the owner of the vehicle getting EXTREMELY antsy, the tech backed off. Mind you, dyno runs are very hard on an engine because the car sits there in the same spot while the engine revs it's little heart out with possibly a moderate sized fan blowing air that matches 55 MPH of wind at best. I'll be the first to agree...a street car piston engine would not be able to replicate that, assuming it would even be able to rev up to 9000 RPM.
