Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on whether to buy an RX-8 I checked out over the weekend. This will be my first 8 and also the first time buying a used car, so I'm not really sure what to look for. Well, the 8 was at a Ford dealership and was listed as a local car, no accidents with ~66000kms. I thoroughly inspected the exterior of the car and didn't notice anything wrong with it... very clean. Everything inside (air con, stereo, windows, etc.) seemed to be working fine and on the test drive, the engine was smooth and responsive.

Everything seemed to be fine with the car, until I got the ICBC Claims Info. The report revealed that "glass" had been repaired a couple times at ~$850 each and that it had been in a couple of collisions. One collision at ~$1800 in repairs and the other with no details at all (in the "amount paid" and "nature of payment" columns of the report, it says "no details"). The dealer said these collisions were minor at under $2000 in damages, which allows them to advertise the car with "no accidents." I asked if I could have the car inspected at a Mazda dealership, but he said he could have that done at the Ford dealership (143 point inspection), which would save me a hundred bucks.

So, I'm wondering, should I avoid this car? Or are the dealer's claims legit and I should seriously consider this car? Any advice on what I can do to get more info on this car?

TIA

Thanks for the quick response! Yeah, I was leaning towards not buying the car, but since this will be my first used car, I wasn't really sure. The dealer also said the damage was most likely to the bumpers and not to any major part of the car, hence the low repair costs (under $2000). Is it legal for them to advertise the car as no accidents if this is the case?

This is just as shady as one of the sales guy at a Mazda dealership in Toronto (will not name) that i went to when I was looking for my new RX-8. The sales guy told me the car was brand new. It had 800 km on the odometer. I asked if it was a demo, and he said no. I asked how is it brand new if it has 800km? I normally expect something less than 30km as new. He told me some law saying it's legit to say so... I just said "yeah right" and I left the dealership.

I also asked how did it "accumulate" those 800km as a brand new car? He tells me it's all through testing at the factory, and testing at the dealership to make sure everything is working well before selling the car to you....

nigga tried to take me for a foo!

Could have been used by one of the salesmen....I think they can use some of the new cars for 3 months.

I had my front bumper rubbed/scrapped about 8 inches long and cracked the corner light lens...barely broke the paint and it was a $1200 ICBC claim....it doesnt take much to add up to $1800.

If one of jockeys on the dock has an incident unloading your car, they repair it and the Dealership never knows.

Yes it won't take much to accumulate $2000 in damage, but it is sounding very shaddy, just walk away man walk away! you will find something better.

to bad the dollar is dropping I would say go to the states, awesome deals!!

Yeah, based on what you have said......it's just not worth it. Buy something else or elsewhere.

Footman, just so you know the legal definition of a "demo" is a car that has been LICENSED and driven for demonstration purposes. While 800km is excessive, if the car has never been titled it is still legally a new car:) We do on a rare occasion get a car that has about 150-200km on it with a sticker in the windshield stating that the car was used for quality assurance purposes and to leave the sticker on the car for the customers to see.

I hear ya 84Racing, but when I buy a new car it will be new, less than 80k MAX on it, or I will not buy it. That's just me.

If it is a demo than fine, but I expect a good discount, cause you know that car has been pushed hard for the first whatever km. Not so good on a brand new car.
