View Full Version : Looking to buy my first 8 and...
NiteFly 10-06-2008, 04:11 PM I think I've found it :)
http://www.trader.ca/powerpage/details.aspx?vlotid=1522690&adid=7261694
I've been looking for my first car for a bit and I fell in love with this right when I laid eyes on it. I know it might not be the best car for a driver like me but I said if I save up my money for a nice car, why not get one, so I saved up and now I'm looking for a purchase. Did some research, got some insurance quotes and stuff, and looks like I can handle all the costs (gas, insurance, payments and what not)
I'm checking it out at the dealer tomorrow in the morning but kinda nervous lol. First time ever I'm going to check out a car so thinking about all the questions and stuff I should say. Don't really know anyone close I can take with me that does know what they're doing either =p Probably can take my mom but thats bout it, hopefully everything will go smoothly.
Few things I like to know is like, when I go and ask them about this car, they show it to me, I check it out, look inside, outside, under the hood and whatnot, ask my questions I might have about it where do I go from there? Just say that yes, I'm interested and would like to take a test drive or something? Or maybe ask if I can get it looked at by a mechanic?
Also, what are some must-ask questions that I can't forget? I googled this stuff but there's 100's of them lol. Do they have to give me a history report if I ask for one, or is it up to them? The ad says only 1 owner so that's good, must be just off lease or something, and it says comes with 3 year warranty so will ask about that for sure.
Anyways thanks your time everyone who read this lol, I really hope everything goes well and I get the car, it really is a beauty.

Sigh, people at work told me the exact same thing. I would like to hear some stories though. I was thinking since it wasn't a private listing, but a dealer I would be safe but that probably is the last thing I should be thinking huh...
rotarygreg 10-06-2008, 05:31 PM "yeah, friend of mine bought a car from a used dealer, 3 months later, BAM, herpes"

right faded? :P
Good that we got support from Al who sort out the Bull shit from those dealer or faded will get royally screwed...
Thumper3322 10-06-2008, 11:50 PM I bought mine via Ebay from the states, no test drive nada. Knock on wood she is doin great!! It's the same with any used car, cross your fingers and hope for the best. I would trust buying one off of Al tho over anyone else, if it's in your price range.
Take it for a drive, and drive it hard and listen to everything!
What I have read, ask how old the previous drive was (if they know). It really depends how it was driven whether the engine is gonna be good or not. Driving it hard (redline once a day) is good engine, granny driving = bad engine. So someone younger will most likely have driven it the way it needs to be driven.
Do more reading on here, there is tons on this kinda buy. GL and hope to see ya at the meets.
OH...don't buy winning Blue it is so ugly!!!
NiteFly 10-07-2008, 12:37 AM Alright, thanks for all the input everyone.
I'm still searching, hoping to find one with a good financing deal, found two of them that gives 24 months to pay with 0% interest, that sounds really good.
I checked out the one at the scarboro mazda site that some of you suggested and while it is really nice, it is oh so slightly out of my price range, I was looking to pay 14-16k (already kind of pushing it) with tax and everything. I won't cross it off my list yet though, I'll have a talk with my parents and see what they have to say. If I can get some type of financing like the one I said earlier then that would be a big plus, but still kind of a long shot =p Oh well, we'll see.
Sanguine 10-07-2008, 01:13 AM If you can find out the service history on the car that would be good for you.
If it helps you out, I just bought my RX-8 in August. It was an 2004 silver GT with 67,000 kms for (about) $15,700. I say about because the actual amount was some random number that after tax, fees and all that came to 19,500 even. I also paid up front in one lump of cash/bank draught.
NiteFly 10-07-2008, 01:41 AM Wow, since I already know what car I want I thought it would be pretty easy to decide on one lol, but already feeling overwhelmed... I'm 99.9% going for one from autotrader, got my list of all in my price range so will be going with on of these...

Rotary Mike 10-07-2008, 08:49 AM Autotrader is awesome! Best company in the world!
I may know someone who works at autotrader, and he may work in the department that deals with used car dealerships online inventory:D:
Ok, fine, it's me.
I'll find you a car, but do to company policies, I'll do it through PM's. Check your mailbox!
BTW - I bought basically the same car this August with 61000KM for $16 500.
A good question to ask is if it is on it's original engine or not. If it is, there is a good chance it will need to be replaced soon. ('04's are like that, but at least the engine is under warranty for 160 000KM and 8 years)

Al was a great help on that matter. But nothing's really been stored out yet. They've pretty much told me to *uck off. So at this point I'm going to be writing a few nasty letters to various folks to harrass that dealership.
In any case. If you want my two cents on this matter seeing as I just picked up my 8 acouple of weeks ago, I suggest that:
A) You buy the car from a Mazda dealership if at all possible. That way you can get the detailed information about the car right up front (service history, recalls, blah blah blah). In addition, going to an authorized dealer gives you a better chance at getting something fixed if there is something wrong.
B) If you still insist on getting the car else where (really dude... just don't do it), then at the very least insist on bring the car to a Mazda dealer and have them check the car out before you lay down the money.
C) Just do A and save yourself the hassle. Depending on the dealership you can get a decent deal (IE find the money for that Black GT at Scarborough Mazda (which is actually a better deal then I got mine for :banghead: ) It's already been throughly looked at chances are you wont have to spend another cent on it), and you have the peice of mind that you're not getting a potential Peice Of Ssss...stuff.
Other then that... check out the TSB so you have an idea on what can bust.. check for rust in the rear wheel wells and at the bottom of the rear doors... do a CLUTCH test (this is what killed me)...
I had been battling with the used car dealership that I bought the car from over the clutch for acouple of weeks.. and they've tried to pull some really underhanded crap with me which I won't get into here because it would turn into a freakin' novel... anyways.. I had to replace the clutch asap 'cause it was dying at an alarming rate (all the clutch tests didn't help this). Trust me... the last thing you want is to drop 15k on your car then have to spend another 1k on a clutch or anything else for that matter.

REV-illusions 10-07-2008, 11:52 AM TAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK KKKAAAAAAAAAAAA Libre!

huh? why would the engine need to be replaced?! As long as it was maintained properly their shouldn't be any problems...

A lot of the 04-05 models had engine troubles. I can't remember the changes if any, but the reman engines that are produced now seem to be far more reliable.
That being said a lot of 04 RX-8s are still running around on their original engine.
rotarygreg 10-07-2008, 12:34 PM dont most used car dealers offer like a bumper to bumper 30 day/5000km warranty? both cars ive bought from used dealers(my lancer and now my 8) have had that on them. i guess i never had to call them on anything yet though, so they might weasel out of it if in fact you do run into some issues, but i wouldnt know so....
Good luck with the purchase.
Greg
Thumper3322 10-07-2008, 01:24 PM Get the black one...we need a black one in our group :)
prospectjtaz 10-07-2008, 01:48 PM We have a black one in the group, Anthony/Proficientone, he's just as busy as the rest of the West Enders.
He's only free on Sundays.
I got my 8 for the states, most the Mazda Warranty covered everything. Whatever fails just gets replaced by better than OEM stuff.
NiteFly 10-09-2008, 04:33 PM Well, I narrowed my search to about 2 or 3 cars now. The dealerships are relatively close so will try to visit each one. Hopefully I'll get to one tomorrow, if not first thing next week.

Not really too sure about #4, from the pics, something looks a little strange with the front, not too sure, but I can see for sure it's missing the right fog light. #1 seems to be what I'm most drawn too, I guess because it's the first one I really liked, plus it advertises the 3 year warranty with them.
Just wondering, if the engine needs to be replaced, I guess that would be coming out of my pocket?
millchan 10-09-2008, 05:43 PM getting a used rotary it's like buying lottery
you better ride on a brand new demo car, feel how the engine sounds and power
and go ahead to ride on those 8's u wanted to buy
ask for the information about how the previous owner drive the car if u can.
high milage doesnt mean all, if the milage mainly come from highway.
But the milage were from tracks, low milage would kill the engine.
this is my opinion. if I get it wrong, please, correct.
Footman 10-09-2008, 05:50 PM Funny thing with this car is, if you ask the salesman how it was driven by the previous owner, and the usual reply is "oh such and such drove it very slowly and easy on the engine, didn't rev it high or anything like that blah blah blah"; then your actual response is more like "oh really? that's bad then, since the ports are most likely clogged up with carbon, I don't want this car anymore...." ahahahaaha
It's akin to going to the local farmer to buy apples and you ask him, "Hey are these apples soft? (in a tone that suggests you are looking for soft apples)" and he replies, "Yes are very soft and juicy". Then you reply with, "Oh no thank you then, I was looking for crunchy and firm texture applies" and you walk away. ahahaha
Smokin_LaLa 10-09-2008, 06:30 PM ^ LOL Sales people are so fun to F**k around with, like when i was buying my 8 i asked how many cylinders are in this car? and dude was like "I'm pretty sure it is 8 cylinder, i think thats why they have 8 at the end of the name" needless to say i got the hell outta there faster than my 8
Thief 10-09-2008, 06:30 PM #1 has too much mileage for my liking
#2 is a GS, which is OK, but there's no mileage info
I say fuck #3 since it's auto
LOL @ the tow hook on the rear of #4
prospectjtaz 10-09-2008, 07:11 PM Ya the last one he has the tow hook plugged in, that car also has an aftermaket exhaust, look at the tail pipes.
Thief 10-09-2008, 08:59 PM They look like stock pipes to me.
Thumper3322 10-09-2008, 09:33 PM Did you buy it yet??
Go GT or go HOME!!
Serious tho, really worth getting the GT even for the TCS/DCS ask thief about what happens when it is turn off.
***EDIT***
NO WB - IT'S UGLY!!!
Hayaku 10-09-2008, 09:46 PM I've been thinking I jumped the gun a little early on this GS. Already gotten in a little trouble the past couple rainy days.
Could be the tires... or just me... or the Miata I've been driving for 2 years.
prospectjtaz 10-09-2008, 09:54 PM You dont need DSC, just learn to to drive better, thats goes to all you.
Thumper3322 10-09-2008, 10:03 PM You dont need DSC, just learn to to drive better, thats goes to all you.
No you don't need it!! Just an extra safety precaution for that one incident when your woman's head is in your lap lets say and you aren't concentrating that well on the road and you turn a little to hard and BANG your free bj just became the most expensive one EVER!!
....and I love it in the winter!!
Hayaku 10-09-2008, 10:03 PM Yeah that's true. I usually head off to the Finch TTC parking lot on a weekend when it's wet/raining/snowy out to see how whatever new thing I'm driving handles. Haven't had the time yet this time.
Sorry to hijack btw, lol.
NiteFly 10-10-2008, 02:21 AM No, I haven't made a purchase yet, still deciding. #1 seems my best bet, maybe I should wait a bit and see what else comes up on autotrader... not too sure. First time ever I'm looking for a car so kinda taking my time, I really don't want to make a bad decision. There's so much stuff to check, I guess with a 2004 model, there's probably quite a few tune up checks to look after, I guess minor things like spark plugs, fluids, bearing/joint checks etc are expected, I just don't want to buy it and then have to change something like the timing belt or brakes...
Footman 10-10-2008, 05:53 AM timing belt.... LOL.... no valves here.
Thumper3322 10-10-2008, 08:51 AM timing belt.... LOL.... no valves here.
:lol2: !!!
NiteFly 10-10-2008, 09:35 AM oops
Thief 10-10-2008, 09:50 AM Since the 04's were the first MY, people do seem to have think they're more temperamental. Make sure you get as MUCH checked as you can.
Kafka 10-10-2008, 10:26 AM Again, for other cars maybe private sale is as good as it gets. but this is a rotary and you don't know how stupid ppl can be treating their cars...hence my opinion on dealer checked/verified ones...
millchan 10-10-2008, 04:28 PM What I would suggest you is, go US to buy an 8 with the same amount of money, you could buy a double nice 2nd hand 8. These are the points why I would suggest you to buy it from US.
#1 From my knowledge, my friend in US said the regular price of a 4-50K milage 8 is about $9000 (private deal)
#2 As you are buying a 2nd hand 8, the warranty is usually void or expired, so there is no different between u buying a car outside Canada.
#3 the total amount of purchasing an 8 from US including Tax, would lower than buy a high milage 8 from GTA
But before doing that, please ask about your insurance company how much different between it.
These information might not be totally correct, but this is what I heard from my friends in US. Therefore, please double check it if you are interested in it.
