Why should I be concerned?

Dodge Viper - 500hp - 8.2 litre Engine

City 19.4L / 100KM

Porsche 911

City 13.3L / 100KM

My RX8

Average after 5 tanks:

21.3L /100KM

Dealership doesn't think there's a problem. They tell me I need to break it in more ...

Hi JimSabo,

I used to be an RX-8 owner... but took the buy back. From day one, my fuel consumption was really bad... between 18L/100km and 20L/100km .... and that was during the summer!

After more than 4500km, after asking my dealer and Mazda Canada to check my car... (I got the same reply you had), I returned my car.

I can easily imagine that with the cold days, things doesn't improve. From my past experiences with previous cars, I was expecting a 25%-30% increase of fuel consumption during the winter (that last 6 months in Quebec!!!)... which translate to more 22L/100!

Sorry, but that was to much fuel for too little power. I loved my Rx-8, it was the best car I ever owned and if Mazda eventually improve the fuel consumption, I might get another one

Good luck
François

François, My RX consumes about 2l more per 100K since it got cold here in Mtl. I do not idle it any more then in july, crank it, buckle up and go. i'm mostly on HW and it got up from about 12 to 14.5 l per 100K in the last month. Sadly last night's snowfall means i will only drive my red car when the roads are clear of any snow so it could be only 3-4 times a month until april... :-(

Hi Michel,

See the things on the positive side... at least you will drive it once in a while.... and you still own a great car.... me, I'm driving a "great  " Saturn 2000 while waiting to get a "coup de coeur" for some car... or another RX-8 if they can promise me around 13L/100!

The thing I love the most about the Saturn... going to the shopping center and parking anywhere, between two cars... no matter how tight it is :D ... the bad side, with my 8 and Audi TT, I used to park so far away that I had to walk a lot... which is very good for your health... now I don't walk and get fat;)

My modded FB (see sig) in the summer gets about the same mileage as my 8 in the winter so far. So I'm not disappointed.

Having lived in Winterpeg, I would imagine your mileage is going to be even worse with lots of stop-n-go traffic and freezing temperatures. From what I can tell so far, stop-n-go traffic is the 8's worst enemy when it comes to mileage.

When all the complaints started everyone said, well it's a sports car what do you expect.

But Now that I have my s2k I can say the RX8 fuel consumption is too much. I got 8.0L/100km on my first tank on the S2k. The s2k is faster and has more power. It's 200lbs lighter though.

FYI, since getting my new toy a couple of weeks ago (loving it!), I get 10-11 liters/100 km on winter tires, with maybe 1 or 2 redlines a day. I've been told that regardless of driving habit (within reason) 650km per 70 liter tank are to be expected with this car.

Ohhhh, black car in snow?? Brave man!

Or WAIT a second is that Brickyard? Do I see a hint of purple??

IMO Brickyard has got to be the BEST colour ever, I love it.

Yes, she is a Brickyard. Wasn't easy to find either! The coolest thing is that Nissan only offered that color for 1/2 of '03 and discontinued for '04.

You going to AutoX the S2000 in '04? I'm definitely going to head out. I think MCO.org still has the Corel Centre for events.

Not going to auto-x till I have a bit of money to burn on tires, still running the OEM's and would like them to last at least this next summer.

I saw a brickyard back in September drive through Kanata it was SWEET, gotta be one of the best colours, it's so stealth.

Guys, I hate to break to to you, but most 8 owners didn't buy this car with dreams of good fuel economy. Rotary engines have historically been plagued by this trait, and while the pre-release numbers for fuel economy were off the mark a bit, you should know what you're getting into. I completely respect everyone's desire to drive a car that doesn't cost a fortune in gas (and time at the pumps), but most enthusiasts aren't going to return their $50,000 investment because they have to fork out a couple of extra fillups a month.

On behalf of many 8 owners, we're happy to see you're enjoying your new rides....but we bought and kept our cars for a reason...and it wasn't fuel economy.

Not trying to start a flame war, but you're in an RX-8 forum...so expect us to stand up for this fine automobile (that gets very poor fuel economy!).

Deep Blue, I wasn't trying to put anybody in a position to defend any car. I was only providing comparative figures which I would have found informative months ago.

Having said that, you are right. I really don't have much to contribute to this board and shouldn't really be posting anymore. In fact, I was more interested in checking to see how some of the Ottawa guys were doing.

Enjoy your ride guys.
