shaunv74 09-26-2008, 05:12 PM I have heard good things about the Dunlop Star Specs. People in autocross are moving to them from the Yokohamas because they handle heat better.

Note, the Direzza DZ101 is not the Z1, nor the Z1 Star Spec.
As for the selections listed by the OP- if this is simply a choice of Ultra High Performance tire for daily/ spirited driving, you can choose any of the above.
imput1234 09-26-2008, 07:06 PM none of those, save up a little more..and get good tires, actually falken rt615's are around that price range
Motomouse 09-26-2008, 09:26 PM thanks all
And If i buy rims now I will have to choose one of them now too. or I let the new rims sit at home for awhile hmmmm
I didnt know the rt615 are better
Motomouse 09-26-2008, 09:30 PM I looked over the falken site and they dont have them in 19" so anyway I cant get them
They looks good
swoope 09-26-2008, 09:31 PM thanks all

you might slow down and tell us how you are going to use the tires.
just street, auto x, track days?

Motomouse 09-26-2008, 09:34 PM street :)
No Iam a lil bit in rush couse I will probably have to make decision tomorrow hehe
Beers swoope:)
Motomouse 09-26-2008, 09:38 PM but I dont want to make a mistake like last time I bought some falkens but very cheap as a replacement for my dunlop sport
Dunlop was 225 falken 245 and what I feel now taking some old good knowing turns my car is handle much worse and truction control geting on all the time even if I make those turns slower then before
imput1234 09-26-2008, 10:43 PM If your on stock wheels get 245/40 all around.
The Falken RT 615's have phenomenal dry grip,
but suck in the rain. My old bald S03's were far superior in the rain.
If you want some tires that rock both in the dry and wet
Dunlop Z1 Star Specs rock, they are simply amazing in both dry and wet, but cost about $25-30more.
the RT 615's cost $141/each

but for the street both are overkill.. have a set of the dunlops star specs on order...
if it is just the street i would think the op would like a tire that lasts longer that 12 to 15k miles..
i would say that his selection in the first post is pretty damn good.
and i do agree the 245 40 18 is the way to go..
beers
I ran a set of Falken 451's for over 25000 miles...I really had no complaints with them. They were as great in the rain as they were in dry conditions.
angeljoelv 09-26-2008, 11:29 PM toyo's r888
toyo's r888
The OP is looking for a good street tire...duh!
imput1234 09-26-2008, 11:38 PM but for the street both are overkill.. have a set of the dunlops star specs on order...
IMO they are not overkill, just good street tires.
swoope 09-26-2008, 11:42 PM toyo's r888
ass! :)
btw I8U, angel knows a bit about rx8 5 speeds! how odd is that!

swoope 09-26-2008, 11:50 PM IMO they are not overkill, just good street tires.
yes,
but it you are not going to use them to there full potential you are wasting money.. and you cant use the 615 or the star specs to the max on the street.
why would you get those tires to waste the potential? ego?
i have been running kumho spts for the last two sets of tires. great tire for the steet, really, really good in the rain..
did fine at a track day, but i am learning tracks with radial tires. that should set you back a bit.
i have been fighting this same question for the last week.
i was looking at
star spec
615
the new xs kumho
the old mx kumho
ended up going with the star spec.. i hope i made the right choice. ;) but i am doing track days.. and know that tire wear is going to be happening..
btw, thx south fl for the help in the past.. really sorry i missed the pp 02 deal.

imput1234 09-27-2008, 12:12 AM I drive a lot, almost every other day I go for "sprinted" drives. I enjoy this car very much, I would not be able to have this much fun on regular tires. I also track and drift my car frequently, drive to and from the track. To me it would be a huge hassle to change wheels every time, and that's a lot more money for another set of wheels and tires. I keep it simple just get in the car and drive.
angeljoelv 09-27-2008, 12:17 AM My bad..... sometimes I dont read right, hahaha but r888 work for me....
Oh, don't get me wrong they work for me too. But if we really want go overboard, he should get a set of Hoosier Koni's...HAHAHA!
swoope 09-27-2008, 12:45 AM love is in the air!
and imput. sorry i feel strong about this. spirited drives are what 70% ?
you dont need to get to the 615 level to do that. not safe on the street. pissing away money..
but hey if you have money to piss away. the 888s are sweet..

dbright007 09-27-2008, 01:05 AM For what the OP wants, I would have said the Toyo's. Have em, like em a ton. Probably wouldn't pick em as a dual use track/street though.
Swoope,
I have heard great things about the star spec. Those and the old Kuhmo's I used for street/track would have been what I put on for dual use. Price matters when you are gonna tear em up.

we will find out in early nov. ;)
it was a hard choice between the star specs and the also new kumho xs.
but to the the real point of the thread. the op has great choices made. and might have to deal with a bit of winter.
the stuff we are talking about is just fluff...
trying to respect the thread!

.... and he will need new tires in 10-15K miles.
Motomouse 09-27-2008, 01:58 PM thanks to everyone but I will probably buy new rims and I want to go 275/30/19 on all 4 corners so the seller get me those options to choose. He can get me any brand probably but he have a discount on falkens and dunlops and for those sizes any tire looks expensive for me :)
So I think have to pic one of above
Thanks
Motomouse 09-27-2008, 02:04 PM and spending around 1000$ for tires I want them to last long
Not sure 275/30/19 will fit very well...may be some rubbing.
Motomouse 09-28-2008, 09:35 PM I will do some fender rolling
They should tuck very nice then! Pics when complete...
Rx8urZ 09-28-2008, 11:09 PM i have the falken 452's and they are the perfect tire for wat you are looking for. i am running them on 19's also. they handle great in dry and wet you wont regret it just my 2 cents
Motomouse 09-29-2008, 05:13 PM put an order today 275 FK 452 4 corners :)
Thanks guys

Hi, Swoope:
It's been awhile for me on the boards. Bought my RX-8 in January 2004. Since that time I have come to trust your advice on most things RX-8. So...If those tires are a bit much for the street, would you also feel that 245s are "overkill?" I drive enthusiastically on back country roads and in the twisties on hills and mountains, but I do not race or autox. Would 245s be a good bet for me?
OK, I can't resist: short of the High-end Dunlop or the Falken, could you suggest a few appropriate options?
Thank you. Good to "see" you again.
Jeffrey
swoope 10-03-2008, 12:27 AM the 245 40 18 fits the wheel fine adds a bit more rubber to the road.. and just looks better..
as to what i would recomend, depends on how much money you want to spend..
i have been very happy with the two sets of kumho spt i have had on the car.. great tire very good in the wet, and not a lot of money. lasts a long time..
i did one track day on them and they were fine for easing back into track days..
tomorrow a set of dunlop star specs go on. as i am doing more track days now, need more tire. and not willing to do dedicated track day tires yet..
if you have any other questions you can send me a pm..

RotaryP7 10-04-2008, 07:02 PM Why is going 245/40 good on oem rims? Better handling? Better feel? I can't get this question answered..
ZumnRx8 10-04-2008, 07:05 PM No Matter What Dont Do Falken.....but I Go With Nitto 555 OR NEO GENS
NEO GENS ARE GREAT BECAUSE THEIR WALLS ARE TAPERED AND NEVER RUB!!! THATS WHY I HAVE THEM...THEY ARE MADE FOR LOWERED CARS WITH LARGER RIMS...IM RUNNIN 20"S AND NEVER RUB....EVER~REAL GREAT GRIP AND HANDLING.

more rubber on the road, and to some extent rim protection..

really large font and running 20s. so you really dont care about handling or grip..
just care about not rubbing.. good way to choose a tire..

IF U WERE TO DRIVE MY CAR U WOULD SEE NO HANDLING HAS BEEN SACRIFICED...DONT THINK I THREW 20" ON THERE WITHOUT KNOWING ANYTHING. THE REVOLUTION OF MY WHEEL IS THE SAME AS A STOCK WHEEL.
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 10-05-2008, 03:06 AM how about some bridgestone potenza re01r? i got 245/40/18 and love them to death, great for daily driving, great for track/auto x and great for spirited driving.

and they weigh how much? and i dont care who makes them. 20" wheels are for show.. btw, what is diameter in length.
are you saying that a 20" wheel can have the same size tire diameter as a 18". well yes it can.. does that make it a good idea. not really..
the bigger concern is saying falken is crap and nitto is good.. just not accurate.. if you are buying tires because they wont rub you have proven my point already..

I JUST SUGGESTED ANYTHING BUT FALKEN..........AND IN MY I WOULD CHOOSE NITTO....I NEVER SAID NOT BF GOODRICH, OR PIRELLIS, OR TOYO. I PUT MY OPINION AND IT WAS NITTO...THE 555' IF U DIDNT READ.....I KNOW BF GOODRICH PROBABLY HAS THE BEST TIRE RIGHT NOW FOR TRACK/CIRCUIT....BUT SOMEONE COMPLAINED ABOUT RUBBING AND THEN I SUGGESTED THE NEO-GENS
Motomouse 10-05-2008, 05:42 PM I orderd falken already so for me its too late. But I hope they will be good tires for a daily driving
Thanks
SouthFL 10-05-2008, 06:04 PM Neogen has a 280 UTQG rating. It would be a UHP tire, along with the other tires on the list which hover around the 300 UTQG mark.
Neogen was basically created with a special inner shoulder for "lowered vehicles" with "higher degrees of negative camber"- read- people who lower their street cars with no regards for a proper alignment and/ or alignment compensating modifications (camber plates/ camber bolts, and other adjustable suspension components), i.e. slammed Civic.
Running lots of negative camber is ideal for track setups, but it is killer on street tires for daily driving and Nitto came up with this tire to market to the tuner crowd who wants a certain look without following through with the essential suspension adjustments.
At 280 UTQG, the Neogen is a sporty tire, but nowhere near the performance levels of a track tire.
Also, making blanket statements that Falken tires as a brand are inferior is ignorant. There are many good Falken tire offerings.
RedefineRX8 10-05-2008, 06:07 PM he obviously knows everything, I mean he put 20s on his car and sacrificed absolutely zero performance.

Don't worry, you'll love the Falken ST615's. I used them for a daily driven tire and I had no problems. They even seemed to handle rain OK until they were almost worn out. I have been looking at the Dunlop Z1's and will probably put those on next spring.
