View Full Version : Geeze this car is REALLY popular with us military types!
Rotary Nut 12-01-2003, 02:32 PM It must be the fighter jet like looks and handling!
I had to go downtown Newport News this morning on an errand. As I was moving over to get into the left lane to catch my exit to the base (Ft Eustis, VA), to my amazement I see some familair tail lights up ahead. Great googa mooga! It was another Sunlight Silver RX-8 cruising on base! So that's how my car looks on the road!
:D
Well it was very, very cool as our identical 8's pulled up to the line, at the same time mind you to get our IDs checked. The other guy didn't see me untill we pulled up to stop at the MP. I gave him the thums up and slowly pulled away down the road! It still had it's temp tags on it so it's still quite new and he was headed over to the quarters area.
Now thats profilin', definitely a Kodak moment.
That makes SIX, count em' SIX RX-8s on Ft. Eustis so far! Its almost stiffeling!
GOD I LOVE THIS CAR!!!!!
cueball 12-01-2003, 03:26 PM There a quite a few military men (current and retired) on this board.
Good to see so many military men enjoy it.:)
MEGAREDS 12-01-2003, 04:04 PM I've seen exactly ONE since I started looking in September here in northern Illinois. That's one reason I'm loving it! I'll be sorry to see what I expect will be a bloom of 8s in the spring. Until then, I'm getting a lot of, "Hey, what da heck is that?" My favorite: "Are those back windows just for show?"
Quino 12-01-2003, 04:04 PM I had the same kind of moment yesterday. i have a silver, but this red one came right up to my butt on the interstate and we danced around each other - literraly did circles around each other at 80 mph - then he took off at higher speeds (I am still breaking mine in)....
Magnesium 12-01-2003, 04:08 PM Still haven't seen one on the road. Been lookin since I picked mine up in July.
oosik 12-01-2003, 04:16 PM My base only employs about 500+ ppl and I'm the only 8 in the lot, thankfully. Of course, being the only one and it being Blue, I have a hard time sliding out of work early because everyone knows it's me..................it was the talk of hte base for the first week I had it. I didn't outright tell anyone just played along as if I didn't know who it belonged to. But when they finally saw BAG(nickname for Bald Angry Guy) sliding into the seat, a lot guys freaked..........
success07 12-01-2003, 04:48 PM I have seen a handful at best here in Columbus. I am enjoying the exclusivity while it lasts. The long stares are priceless and I enjoy every one of them.
Though every Mustang, RSX, and Civic wants to rev their engine when they go by. I love to give them a little taste of the rotary then back off. Just a little something to wet their appetite. I love it.
FastRX8 12-01-2003, 05:59 PM Hooah! To date, I am the only RX-8 owner on Fort Gordon. Glad to see others enjoying it as much as I do.
Salute to ROTARYNUT and other Sunlight Silver owners!
USAF_RX8 12-01-2003, 06:24 PM You dang right us military types like it! Sweet car isn't it? I'm TDY in Altus, Oklahoma right now and from what I understand.. I have the only 8 in the county right now. Also a sunlight silver, and it gets lots of stares as expected. Its alot of fun, in a little town like this.. can't go anywhere without everyone wanting to talk to you. lol Glad to see more service folk here in the forms.. Hope everyone enjoys their new toy.

Ugh - AWACS guys! Ha! Well, at least you're up front and not in the tube. :D
Barksdale huh? Ever make it over for OEF? If so, your crew's talked to me. :)
SikRedRX-8 12-01-2003, 08:46 PM I am military and have one. There is one other guy on my base that has one. He is on the board also. (lightemup)
rx8ntexas 12-01-2003, 09:25 PM I'm not military but I just wanted to say to all you military guys and your buddies, Thank you.
Xavier296 12-01-2003, 11:33 PM RX-8 was my present to myself when I signed up for nuclear sub duty. Didn't think the truck fit me anymore. I made the right decision.
B-Nez 12-02-2003, 08:06 PM I was the 2nd owner at Hurlburt Field as of 29 July, and since then I've seen 1 lightning yellow on base and within the last few weeks another velocity red now owned by my neighbor 2 houses down, lol.
rxtreme 12-02-2003, 08:51 PM I was telling Rotary Nut that the first RX-8's I saw on the road belonged to military. It was nice for a while being the only one, but now, sheesh, every other car will end up a RX-8! Rotary Nut, I didn't realize there were 6 RX-8's on Eustis. Damn, that's alot of 8's on such a small post like ours. It's good we all have good taste! I still like brilliant black the best, though!
B-Nez 12-02-2003, 08:58 PM Oh yeah, and my RX-8 and I will be moving to Lackland AFB in May.
zoom44 12-02-2003, 08:59 PM i'm former US Marine, do i count?
sandiegorx8 12-02-2003, 09:09 PM Is sunlight silver the special color for the military or what? I've seen three on my base, 1 silver, 1 red and my silver. My wife's base has a yellow and a black. Still not too many out there.

Of course - don't you know there's no such thing as an "ex" Marine, but there are plenty of former Marines to go around. :)
FighterPilot 12-03-2003, 10:49 AM I'll be at Sheppard AFB, TX in a couple months for Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT).
and hell yeah the fighter plane looks made me fall in love with the 8...got mine titanium gray...even colored like a fighter!
I spent some time at Lackland before the 8.
Rx8Freehk 12-03-2003, 12:09 PM I seem to have the only one here in Spangdalhm Germany, LOVIN IT!

Texas 8 12-03-2003, 05:22 PM I was hoping to be the first 8 owner on Sheppard AFB (Wichita Falls, TX) but, to my dismay I have seen a few others tooling around town. Hopefully within a month or two I can join their "ranks". Texas 8:-)
Texas 8 12-03-2003, 05:24 PM Oh yeah, by the way zoom44 Damn right you count!!!

Ain't that the truth. Not to be "exclusive" but time and again you see these younger guys just getting by all the while driving a car that put 'em in that position. I hope for his sake that he at least lives on post.
Rodbol 12-04-2003, 06:55 AM I'm at Lackland and have had mine for about 2 weeks, this is my thrid RX, so I guess I'm hooked. I have seen one other on base and they do get a lot of attention.
Lock & Load 12-04-2003, 07:14 AM Great to see that there are some military types as owners i was starting to wonder if the rx8 only attracted IT AND COMMPUTER TYPE GUYS .( SOME SEEM TO BE TO ANAL RETENTIVE FOR MY LIKING)

greenrino 12-04-2003, 10:05 AM Hey rx8pilot, I'm a 'junior' enlisted and I paid cash for my RX-8. Just because we're not a "O" doesn't mean we don't have dough.

Easy now - that's not the point he (we) is (are) making. If you've got the cash for it - all the better. There's nothing wrong with having a nice car provided you can afford it without breaking yourself in the process. It's when you start having to do mandatory financial counseling and service record documentation for letters of indebtedness for guys (and girls) who end up spending themselves into a hole that makes you wince. Don't take it as a slight - it wasn't. It's just rare to see folks in lower paygrades with cars that are a little higher up the price list. If your finances allow for it (and for some junior guys they do), then by all means enjoy the new car! :)
(FWIW I was enlisted for 8 years before becoming an officer)

Great to see that you guys still manage to get a buzz out of the rx8 even though your F-16 F -18 MUST BE AN UNBELIEVEBLY AWESOME EXPERIENCE .
Enjoyed your pics .

My 3 most favourable AIRFORCES/PILOTS ARE ISRAELIS AMERICANS AND THE AUSTRALIANS .
Hello fellow military folks. I'm here at hunter army airfield in Savannah, GA. and I had the first one here but I have seen 2 in the last 2 days on post a yellow and titanium. Are you guys out there? -224 MI Bn.

If you could put wings on an RX-8, I'd have no need for anything else!

You Aussies fly the Vark. Swing wing sweetness.
The F-16 is a hotrod for sure. There was a squadron full of them out at that airfield where I shot those photos. But the photo next to those F-18s was very appropriate because...
...while they look great and handle great, both have attrocious fuel performance. Hey, maybe Mazda has plans to make a SuperRX-8, just like Boeing now makes the SuperHornet to fix that shortcoming.

I see what you are saying. I have only been in for 5 years (enlisted) but I saved a lot and the wife makes good money (way more than me). But if you can afford it get it. I catch a lot of shit cause I am so young with such a pricey car. I just made a few wise investment moves that allowed me to get into this price range.
SpacerX 12-05-2003, 01:10 PM Currently in school at ACSC, Maxwell AFB AL (good ol' "Mungumree"). Will be picking up an 8 in the Spring.
Great to hear from all the military brethen -- integrity, service, and excellence!

SDFLY 12-05-2003, 10:58 PM Marines always count and thankyou for your service...I'm currently stationed at Naval Special Warfare Group 3 in Coronado and I believe I'm the only 8 on my side of the strand, I know of a silver one on the water side, spoke to him the other day and he's very happy with his car as well.
