View Full Version : My accidental RX8 purchase...
Steve T 09-09-2008, 12:19 PM Last Friday night I visited a local Mazda dealer with the intention of taking home a new Miata.
My youngest daughter (21) was in from school for the weekend and had come with me. We were
looking the Miata over and she had just started to come around on the ideal of her “old” father
driving this “chick car” when it happened.
We both noticed a blue RX8 sitting towards the back of the showroom. After a brief discussion we
both agreed this car looked more like something I would drive. Normally neither of us cars for the
dark wheel look but this RX8 with the R3 package just looked right. After sitting in the Recaro seats
and looking around the interior I decided I would have to give this one a try.
Mazda bought my ‘04 back after a short period of ownership and I have not really been keeping up with
the RX8 much after that.
The most impressive thing so far is the handling.
I have not had the chance to but many miles on it but hope to remedy that this weekend.
JRichter 09-09-2008, 12:26 PM Congrats! Let's see some pics when you get a chance (of the car, lol).
Jedi54 09-09-2008, 12:28 PM congrats on getting back on the saddle!

HockeyRX-8 09-09-2008, 12:31 PM Congrats! Now post pics!
Huhwha 09-09-2008, 12:57 PM Congrats! Let's see some pics when you get a chance (of the car, lol).
He's got a 21 year old daughter, but you want to see pics of his car - now that's disturbing!
rglbegl 09-09-2008, 01:18 PM Damn, this dude is O.G.
Welcome back
JRichter 09-09-2008, 01:49 PM He's got a 21 year old daughter, but you want to see pics of his car - now that's disturbing!
both together was what I had in mine but I didn't want to offend...
NgoRX8 09-09-2008, 02:30 PM congrats, you'll definitely enjoy it.
SayNoToPistons 09-09-2008, 02:38 PM Congrats! The looks of the R3 grew on me, I love it! Pics?
greg985 09-09-2008, 02:56 PM great buy, lets see pics
Shinka_MJR 09-09-2008, 03:12 PM He's got a 21 year old daughter, but you want to see pics of his car - now that's disturbing!
hell, you could always ask him in this thread if you could date his daughter. LOL kinda creepy though if you think about it to ask a father to take pics of his daughter with the car. "ok hunny, just lean against the hood with your back to me. a little more. There ya go. work it.. work it... Hmm maybe we should put you in that bikini you got while on spring break instead of those torn up short shorts. Maybe the next for the set." /shudder
CyberPitz 09-09-2008, 03:33 PM Agreed with the whole "Post pictures!" craze.
I wish I could accidentally buy me an R3 :lol2:
Steve T 09-09-2008, 05:56 PM I will try to take a few pictures of the RX8, taking pictures of the daughter would be a little to Joe Simpson creepy:)
CyberPitz 09-09-2008, 06:01 PM Hey, at least he has a sense of humor, and didn't go bonkers at everybody asking for pix of the daughter. He gets another +1 for that.
TopGear8 09-09-2008, 06:39 PM Welcome back!!
Deathcraft 09-09-2008, 06:44 PM Pics or ever happened....!!! :P haha..j/k......congrats!
Marklar 09-09-2008, 06:47 PM Congrats! The MX-5 is a fun car, but your daughter is right, the RX-8 is a bit more of a "guy" car :) And a whole lot more practical.
If you don't mind my asking, why did you sell your '04 soon after you bought it? Were there problems with it?
Razz1 09-09-2008, 07:27 PM Welcome! Don't tell Chrism its a chicks car. He sold his 8 for the Miata
Bumble_Bee 09-09-2008, 07:53 PM ^LOL....
Congrats and Welcome...back? :p
Razz1 09-09-2008, 07:56 PM Ja, welcome back!
Soapflake 09-09-2008, 08:44 PM I will try to take a few pictures of the RX8, taking pictures of the daughter would be a little to Joe Simpson creepy:)
Wouldn't be your fault if she just happened to be standing beside the car... with her friends... in bikinis.
robrecht 09-09-2008, 08:54 PM If you don't mind my asking, why did you sell your '04 soon after you bought it? Were there problems with it? Mazda overestimated the horsepower in their initial marketing. When this was discovered, they offered to buy back the cars from owners or to give them free maintenance.

I don't know, free maintenance sounds pretty rocking for, what, 20 HP? Eh.
kvndoom 09-09-2008, 11:26 PM Mazda overestimated the horsepower in their initial marketing. When this was discovered, they offered to buy back the cars from owners or to give them free maintenance.
There are a lot of software companies I wish had this kind of integrity. :eyetwitch
Grats on the purchase, and welcome back to the addiction.
reaper1 09-10-2008, 05:36 AM Wouldn't be your fault if she just happened to be standing beside the car... with her friends... in bikinis.
Nope ............. wouldn't be his fault .............. at all ..:Eyecrazy:
robrecht 09-10-2008, 06:32 AM I don't know, free maintenance sounds pretty rocking for, what, 20 HP? Eh.I agree. I was't criticizing Mazda's resolution of the situation, just answering a question.
Steve T 09-10-2008, 07:54 AM Here are a couple of quick photos. Yes I know they are not very good but it was raining so I took them inside my garage/shop.
I did sell mine back to Mazda. I bought my first one early and figured that if Mazda would let me drive their car for a few months for free I would take them up on the offer. I had planned on waiting a few months and finding another one with but it just never happened.
luis@championsmotorsports 09-10-2008, 08:07 AM nice car but beast of all nice shop/garage,
JRichter 09-10-2008, 08:25 AM Wow, nice car collection.
quantum 09-10-2008, 01:56 PM Is that a Lotus and a Prowler surrounding the 8? Niiiiiice.
JRichter 09-10-2008, 02:00 PM ^ looks like a Viper and a Prowler, but is that a GT40 I see on the other side of the Viper?
enthegen 09-10-2008, 02:04 PM Here are a couple of quick photos. Yes I know they are not very good but it was raining so I took them inside my garage/shop.
That is a most impressive garage/shop you got there. Actually a better word might be amazing. im just not sure, im still in awe.
Steve T 09-10-2008, 02:29 PM Thanks for the positive comments guys.
JRichter - You are correct, that is a 2001 Silver Prowler and just on the other side of the RX8 is a 2008 Snake Skin Green Viper next is a 2005 Ford GT.
Here a couple that I did post earlier, they are just different angles but I think they show the Ford and Viper a little more. Yes I know the place is a mess, I have not had time to clean up lately.
CyberPitz 09-10-2008, 02:42 PM That garage is...is...holy shit.
Jedi54 09-10-2008, 02:45 PM wow Steve, VERY nice garage you got there! What kind of shop do you run?
HeavyMetal699 09-10-2008, 02:53 PM I'm curious if you race out at mineral wells or perhaps one of the many tracks around the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.
Makes me want to sign up for an event in that area just to beg for a ride in the viper!
Edit: or better yet a Ford GT
devildog1679 09-10-2008, 02:59 PM The best thing about the R3 are the seats. At the track the seats just didn't hold you in enough, I sat in a R3 and see they fixed that.
Steve T 09-10-2008, 05:54 PM Jedi54 - Sorry for the confusion but this is just my garage/shop at home.
HeavyMetal699 - I have been out to the airport at MW a couple of times just to watch. A couple of trips out to the track in Cresson for the events held by Lamborghini Dallas but never been on the track. I will take you for a ride as long as you don't complain about my driving.
Marklar 09-10-2008, 06:03 PM Wow...just wow. Nice cars.
Next you need to get a Cosmo Sport :) If you can find one...
raspyrx7 09-10-2008, 06:16 PM congrats on the R3, its been growing on me too.... maybe get one for $15k in a couple years... if they follow the usual RX8 trend. You should definitely get it out n race it man.
Brettus 09-10-2008, 06:20 PM are you a car collector Steve ?
What are your plans for the 8 - daily driver or just to add to the collection ?
SilverEIGHT 09-10-2008, 06:42 PM Steve, That is an amazing collection. I would love to see you post a gallery of all your cars. Dang.... simply amazing!
Now, we have to talk about that cardboard under your 8. If you plan to drive that puppy and then pull it into the garage on that paper product, keep a fire extinguisher handy. That catalytic converter just may get too hot for your floor protector. When I pull my car onto the grass in my yard to wash it, I usually have a scorched spot where the cat was located and then the grass dies. That's pretty hot. I have a 2005 model and I don't know if they made any changes but I would be careful. I really don't want to see pics of all those colorful cars looking charcoal colored.
I'm impressed that you liked the 8 enough to put it beside all those exotics an classics. Makes me appreciate mine more.
VERY COOL!
kvndoom 09-10-2008, 06:48 PM "Garage"???
:ftw:
"Warehouse" maybe! :) Are you Jay Leno?
CyberPitz 09-10-2008, 07:23 PM "Garage"???

"Warehouse" maybe! :) Are you Jay Leno?
He already owns an RX8 :P
Ross_Dawg 09-10-2008, 07:24 PM Good Lord man, I want your job w/e it is that you do to afford all of these exotics...
Razz1 09-10-2008, 08:51 PM Nice Chevy Impala.
e.d.lyles08 09-10-2008, 09:11 PM Garage + Cars = :Drooling_
RotoRocket 09-10-2008, 09:50 PM Here are a couple of quick photos. Yes I know they are not very good but it was raining so I took them inside my garage/shop.

Steve, sweet color - my favorite color, actually.
Great choice.
fahrfegneugen 09-10-2008, 10:34 PM Wow, like everyone else said, wtf is with the garage, nice!!!!!
05rex8 09-10-2008, 10:56 PM r3 looks great
you my friend have my dream garage.....I don't think I would leave it...I would def have to put a bed/bathroom/kitchen/tv in there.......ah...screw it...I'd camp out on the floor next to the GT40 and piss out back and wash myself with a hose.....as for food....there is delivery
List the cars you have!
delhi 09-10-2008, 11:02 PM Stop pretending Jay! Steve T is such a silly forum handle. Show us your Carrera GT and Dussie!
lesper4 09-10-2008, 11:19 PM Jedi54 - Sorry for the confusion but this is just my garage/shop at home.
Bumble_Bee 09-11-2008, 12:17 AM I'm sorry but...with ALL those cars....The RX-8 purchase was not accidental...!! You may have purchased the "8" over the Miata... but I assume you would have purchased the "8" eventually or your collection wouldn't have been complete... ;)
Garrett 09-11-2008, 03:11 AM A Viper and a GT40, some of my favorite sports cars; pure stick shift muscle with no boring paddle shifting you get on most exotics.
It's funny, I've actually met another guy that was a Ferrari nut-he had at least five of them, a Gallardo...and an 04 Lightning Yellow 8 as his daily driver. Really cool that the 8 gets the same respect as exotics sometimes.
fitz75 09-11-2008, 07:08 AM Stop pretending Jay! Steve T is such a silly forum handle. Show us your Carrera GT and Dussie!
LOL
So... what is the daughter driving... and, are you looking to adopt 0:-)
Steve T 09-11-2008, 09:49 AM Brettus - I am more of an “accumulator” that a collector. I don’t buy them to look at, I drive them all. Don’t really have a designated daily driver but when it rains I drive my 3/4 ton Chevy or a CL63 (official company car).
SilverEIGHT - Thanks for the heads up on the catalytic converter heat.
Razz1 - Thanks, 1969 Impala SS 427 4spd. Mostly stock with the addition of a Tremec 5 spd, cruises at 70 turning 1600 rpm. I think you could hide at least 6 maybe 7 bodies in the trunk and still have room for the spare.
Delhi - Jay is my hero! I have thought about getting a chin implant...
Fitz75 - She now drives an ‘08 Audi TT. This was the wife’s car for a few months but her C63 came in and she had no room left in her garage. The daughter took the Audi and I traded her G35 in for the RX8. Sorry I only adopt cars now, they are cheaper to maintain than children.
wassup_nuthin 09-11-2008, 04:15 PM I want your job....
robrecht 09-11-2008, 04:54 PM r3 looks great

Detrich 09-11-2008, 05:24 PM congrats on the new r3 and post some more pix for us. :)
Marklar 09-11-2008, 05:31 PM At his level, I think the job title would be "wealth management."
kersh4w 09-11-2008, 06:14 PM "hedge fund manager"

04RX8man 09-11-2008, 07:57 PM haha welcome back!!!
