^^ that's the thousand dollar question.

If you want looks: get springs
performance: Short Shfiter + Sway Bars

both will leave you with a little leftover gas money

Good tires aren't a bad idea either. Falken RT615's in a 245/40/18 will make your car a lot more confident in the corners over the OEM potenza 245/45/18's. 4 new tires and an AFE short shifter will run you about $1000 too.

put it in the bank. if you've come across $1,000 and you feel you have to spend it, you should probably be saving it. if nothing else, save it, research, and if you still have it (and maybe a little more), decide on what works best for you.

If your AutoX'ing you should look into some good tires and some Koni shocks. If tires are too expensive then get some sway bars. I have Racing Beat sways and I love them.

....or D-specs for even cheaper....

If i were you i would stick in the bank and check the "For Sale" section multiple times a day for when someone parts out their car and has killer deals. That way when it comes time to negotiate, you have the bargaining power of "money in hand". You can get some sweet deals on here if the timing is right. You could get an entire , lightly used suspension upgrade (springs, shocks/coilovers, sways) on here for $1000 if the deal is right.

Cobb AP would be the first thing I'd go for. Then again, sways/intake or exhaust would work out just as well.

Get a radar detector. I was thinking about getting one for the longest time and i just got a speeding ticket last week. I'm so pissed because i didnt get one, now i'm probably going to be spending the same amount of money on the ticket and traffic school. Oh, and i got clocked at 80 on a 65mph toll road past midnight. BS.

Road trip!!!!!

My cars remain pretty stock, every mod I have adds up to less than a grand. *does a little math in my head to make sure someone doesn't call me out on that number*
So if I felt I needed to spend $1000 on my car, I would just go for a road trip and enjoy the car the whole time.

But as for mods at or around $1000
Used wheels can be found for a great price
the AFE short shifter is the best mod ever
springs are cheap and get rid of that 4X4 look
Window tint is mandatory
A GPS, if you dont already have one
Lots of CD's

For performance:
You can do about 3 HPDEs with a grand and it works with any car you have.

If you're really not into driving, get the Accessport from MazdaManiac. It will give you a little zip in NA form and if you decide to go FI, Accessport can be set up to control your engine for that too.

how quickly we forget the simple mods:

- Clear corners. Mandatory
- A/C and Oil Cooler Screens. www.racingbeat.com If you eat a rock to that AC condenser, that'll be an $800 lesson learned.
- Tint
- fuzzy dice for your mirror.
