The dreaded check engine light has come on out of nowhere recently. Since my car has been out of warranty, I would like to take it to an independent mechanic for a check up. Btw, I live in Morris county in NJ.

If your out of warranty on this car owning a code reader is a must. Many CEL's can be fixed by the owner or any shop provided you know what the error code is for. For now many chain auto parts stores will pull the code for free, try that and post back

In Denville there is one mechanic I can recommend but I don't know of his experience with rotary engines. Romeo's on Rt 53, ask for Lorenzo (the owner). Whole family has been using them for decades, always fare and honest. Just give a call and ask about rotary first.

I'd go to JPR hands down.
Jim is quite fast, and does reliable work.
or else i wouldn't have his decal on my windshield :lol2:

Where is JPR in NJ and what's their phone number?

>I would contact Kevin from Wayne Mazda .........

Is Kevin a mechanic or service rep? Either case, the dealer will charge you an arm and a leg just to pull the code for CEL!

http://jprimports.com/ in Blackwood, NJ. He did my clutch / flywheel and a engine install. He is good, but he is not a oil change simple stuff type of shop. For a simple CEL going to him from Morris County is a long drive. Find out what the CEL is for, there is a good chance its something simple.

I've finally went to AutoZone and have them pull the CEL codes for me on my '04 (btw, thanks for the advice in this forum for going to AutoZone. Many shops actually charge a hefty $50 just for pulling the codes for you!)

I'll posted the codes on the Tech Garage thread in more detail, but I'll go over the results in here as well

It turns out there are multiple codes for the CEL

P0456 (EVAP small leak detected)
P0113 (IAT - Intake Air Temperature circuit)
P0102 (NAP or NAF sensor)

On top of that, now I also get the flashing "DSC OFF" light and the "car skidding" light

Try THIS (http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=81026&d=1152292952) to get rid of the DSC light.
P0456 can be a bad gas cap, that's $10. The other could be a bad MAF sensor, that is about $100. The MAF can be changed in 5 minutes with a screwdriver.
