View Full Version : hi Singapore & help
Hi all . Ok Going to be needing your help .Moved here from tokyo about a year ago & am back to the rotary rx-8. used to drive the 7 there & took a break & now nearly 4 years later , back to the rotary. & it feels GREAT. u guys should be proud of this machine. Runs & feels better than the 7 & kudos for mazda for not giving up on the rotary motif.Anyway might be needing your help on places to service etc etc when needed, not being an "official" car here. Tokyo was relatively simple, where Rotary servicing isint a problem.I should have done my homework earlier, but figured I could count on these pages. Will be firing more questions so be patient!!. happy motoring ..
Hmm, Welcome.
Be sure to read around and i m certain u will find most of them already. But feel free to ask more cuz a question is never stupid and hopefully we know the answers...hehe
Enjoy ur RIDE. Yam Seng.........
Neon Thx for the reply & help..Actually question. Notice u have the Type S.Have you stuck with the original seats? I heard the duty on the leather seats was pretty high, if you went with the leather option!
Fab 8 11-26-2003, 11:38 PM Hi and welcome.
The problem for cars here is that anything factory fitted will be added on to the OMV of the car, upon which duties and taxes are computed. Thats why a lot of car dealers here will fit options such as stereo, leather, aircon, power windows, rims etc locally to avoid the taxes.
Yeah, like what Neon said, feel free to ask!
Cheers!
Thx again !. Will be prying around these & other pages for tips. I'm sure there have been talk about the petrol, but what u using? 95? 98? any noticble difference in performance/mileage?
Fab 8 11-27-2003, 12:32 AM I've only used RON 98. So far, I've tried Shell V power, Shell 98 and Mobil 98. V power feels best, IMO. What have you used so far?
Mobil 98. Havent really gotten above 300 km per fill. But then again stil limited to low revs & city drives. yet to break it in completly.Need to get out into M'siya & keep changing the revs to properly break it in. Anyway was hoping for slightly better mileage @ higher revs or maybe need to switch fuels. ???
me using Shell 98. vpower in also cant really feel d difference leh...
Anyways, after break in u will get more mileage. Dun worry :D
Mockngbrd 11-27-2003, 11:05 AM hmmm....... off topik but... one day shud hav another meetup... den i can kaypoh kaypoh again... :P
Daverx 11-27-2003, 11:16 AM welcome p7&8
feel free to ask & we will try our best to assist.....
most of us oso very new to the 8...........communicating with the car for few months onli :P
Mr Rabbit 11-27-2003, 08:02 PM Hello p7&8.
If by "not an official car" u mean urs not by dealer/agent - don't worry! Cos NOBODY has an 'official' car in that sense, & local dealer/agent may not bring it in anyway.
BTW, maybe u know of juicy Jap sources seeing how u were there?
Rabbit
I do know my dealer who used to take care of my 7 there, though he wasnt happy when I took a break . him, in fact had a long chat with him before I went in for the 8, & he still wasnt happy that I wasnt buying it from him. Anyway do up to tokyo once in a while, so let me know ,& will see if I can help
Mr Rabbit 11-27-2003, 08:56 PM Thanks! I'll have to start saving first; maybe buy less carrots....
quick question. Response to FAB8 thing on all options are locally put. if u dont mind me askin' how much did u guys pay to put the leather seats then ? i presume that was locally put - & I presume they could not have installed the side air bags .. thx guys
Fab 8 11-30-2003, 07:41 PM I have the side airbags, leather seats, and the Bose system all factory fitted. There was nothing fitted locally.
Thx FAB8..trying to get a handle on how far the local importers can go with all sorts of extra's & options.. any recommended place ?
M-ster 11-30-2003, 09:49 PM Don't know if you realize that fabric seats doesn't come with the hard-backing on the 2 front seats. I've paid $2.5k for the leather, basically, you'll get leather for all the seats, door panels (including the steering), hard-backing, electronic adj for driver side and option to put side air-bag.
If you'll to get fabric and do a local uphols, you'll be probably paying around 1k, and all you gonna get is leather over existing fabric. That's it.

How far the local importers can go as in what specs can they get as factory fitted or what can they put on the car locally?
If you mean factory fitted options, I think they can pretty much get whatever you want, but you will need to wait for the car, and also be prepared to pay more... Go to the reputable ones like Garage R or EZ imports.
If retrofitting locally, as what M-ster mentioned, the leather seats will not have the hard backing, and probably the ribbed leather as well.
Thx guys. Basically what I wanted initialy was leather package, but thought I'd get the original 2 toned fabric first(standard) & then upgrade. As usual, I did not check into the the original leather upgrading from Singapore. So as I understand it, it is possible to get the leather seats here as M'ster has done. Is it possible to get a few places whereI might get this done at ? Would Fab8 suggestion of Garage R / EX imports be the place to go ? & do the colours pretty much match the ones there.?
Fab 8 11-30-2003, 11:33 PM I think M-ster got the factory leather seats for the additional $2.5k.
Upgrading to leather locally - dunno if anyone has done that yet...of so, perhaps can share on quality and finish. Garage R or EZ Imports only sells the car, not the leather upholstering services. For that, I guess you should go to the well known players such as Jackspeed or Tomo. Some of the luxury car distributors use them to do the leather seats locally to save on OMV...

You're getting all these things wrong. Read Fab8 and my post carefully.
I'm not doing my leather locally. I'm getting the original factory fitted stuff.
I'm saying it's possible to upholst your seat locally, but you would not get factory fitted goodies.
Garage and EZ are PIs they don't do upholstery.
As for colour, you can damn do any colour to your liking since there's no limitation.
got it?
ps, ooops, Fab8 basically has answered your quiries while I was typing.
yes, finally. Knew it was a smart thing to ask for all your patience initially.. Thx guys
M-ster 11-30-2003, 11:51 PM Hi p7&8
I didn't realize that you've already gotten your car. Otherwise I'd have just recommend you the upholster shops to go (pretty much what Fab8 has mentioned) and no need of explaining about the ordering options with PIs.
So, you planning to do your upholstery soon?
Oh Yes.. been just over a month now, & i must admit ,lots of confusions, really not being able to go to a "Dealer" & discuss & choose what i wanted. My old 7 dealer pretty much gave me the lowdown & recommended I go for the fabric & later possible to upgrade. Anyway yes very much have it & have the standard 2 toned fabric-which isint bad- & didnt want to upgrade to leather unless I saw it first hand, which I also did ,on my last tokyo visit. So now stuck.. which is why i was askin where I might get that done here .. if u do know any upholster shops, then would be great.
M-ster 12-01-2003, 01:32 AM I don't think you'll be in a hurry to re-upholst your seats now right? I would suggest for you to go to one of those RX-8 gathering here, as the guys will be able to explain to you face to face and you'll be able to get a clearer idea of how things work around here.

No . no hurry at all. As i Said, just wanted to first see it in person, before I decided, & really didnt look too tacky. So am in for the upgrade, but no rush. Will check out the 2 places in the meantime though.,Thx again for the help
After u check them out please post their prices. Mine is fabric too. Will be saving this option till the damn fabric gives way which i forsee in very uncanny speed. The getting in/out always require extensive lubrication of your butt cheeks with the lower right portion of the seat......
Errr, confused already anyone? :D
U will be fine...quite a few shops already qualify to fix rotary. C U soon
M-ster 12-08-2003, 06:48 PM Hi p7&8, there's a custom leather job in this thread (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?postid=188723#post188723) that might give you an idea of what to expect when you're doing yours.
Thx M-ster. Dallas fort worth a long way away. I think they did a good job anyhow & it looked cool.. Not too worried about the hard backing-in fact the Enfini 7 didnt have that either, & it was comfortable enough. Only thing Im not sure if The yellow & any other custom leather seats would come with side airbags !! But thx for the info .appreciated!
Sorry. 1 more.. I think the ribbed part is possible to get done. "possible but not sure..
