CAPTCHA will not solve anything. They are easily broken either by automated processes, or redirecting the image to another site (like a porn thumbnail site where users have to enter the info to get access. The user wanting access is shown the CAPTCHA from a remote site, and the info submitted is submitted to the original site and thus automatically "cracked" by human means).

Even Google's captcha is not immune.

What I like doing is putting in a hidden text field with a random key into the page a user is shown. That key is stored into the user's session for that page. The user can only submit if he's loaded the original page and submits a reply/thread that contains the key. If they do not match, the post is rejected. The logic for this is that automated robots use search engines like google to find sites that contain specific forum types (such as vb) that they know the post url and what parms are required. Thus they can find a forum, and post to it without having to pretend to be a user and visit the pages like a user would.

The second thing I do is store when the page was loaded. Most robots that can avoid the first item, will visit a page, then post immediately. This is so they can spam as quickly as possible. With the timestamp, we can reject posts that are submitted within a few seconds of the initial page loading.

I have a few other tricks I employ on my websites (I am intentionally not listing them), but all of them are like the two examples above - completely transparent to the regular user, and none of them involve the users acting like a trained monkey and entering bits of info that hamper normal usage of the website. Suffice to say that I literally have zero spam now. The only way I will get spam is if someone manually does it - which hasn't happened yet since it's typically not cost effective.


I would also recommend not allowing the use of [img] tags unless the user has made more than N posts and been a member longer than Y days.

Another nice thing is to prevent users from being able to create public threads till they've first made a thread in the meet and greet forum. This allows new members to announce themselves and tell us about them, before they're unleashed into the public forums.

I think you already have spyware/malware file somewhere in your computer hiding.... Some spyware or malware files are pretty smart that they can mask themselves as OP system files..so most anitvirus' or spyware sweepers will not detect them as spywares or worms...they think they're just necessary system files..

You might wanna try scanning your comp with two or three different antivirus/spyware sweeper programs.. A lot of antivirus software companies offer free online scan on their websites... :) One of them should detect it...

Two things, first we need to know where it is before we can do anything. There is a lot that we will get that you will never see.
Second, you can go and change your user options to turn off images while you are at work. Thats what I and the other mods have to do.

Thanks- we're literally spending hours a day deleting and banning between all of us, and because most of us are at work, we can't always get them right away, or at 3am when they appear. I was trying to wait for an official go-ahead from IB to start messing with the forum settings, but at this point, this can't continue. We'll do everything we can to get rid of this stuff.

If it violates the TOS (basically, no blatent butt crack or nipples, or is offensive in some other way, ie racially), we remove it. As we already get crap even for THAT, we're not going to remove much else. If you've got questions about specific avatars, send a pm to any of the mods, super mods, or admin and we'll do our best to explain whatever rational is behind the action (or lack thereof) that was taken.

Yes, we do have ban powers. Mods & Super Mods are assigned forums to monitor. It is in these only that we can change, move or delete the post/threads. To see who has these responsibilities, for the forum, scroll to the bottom and it will list the names. When you click on the report posts icon, a email message is sent to these people.

Respectfully..........If I can make a suggestion, until this porn thing gets under control moderators ought to have powers across the board. I don't understand why their powers stop at one forum and end at another.

As a moderator and an administrator on several other large messageboards, I know it can be very frustrating to have a "vested interest" in a messageboard, but be almost powerless to do something about a wrong that is occurring on the board.

A mod has to feel like his hands are tied to see some bad thing happening over and over.......only to have to wait for another mod to happen along who might have powers in that particular forum.

Again, just a suggestion.

You have a very valid point - the 'oldschool' forums allocated their mods according to their strengths, a 'stereo guy' mods the stereo section etc., but if all you need is someone to move spam to the spam-prison, it is REALLY frustrating to have to just watch as they fill all the sections you can't 'get'.

i might add that GA is where most of the spam is occuring recently. i think we have 7 mods, super mods and admins with jurisdiction in that sub forum and usually stealth, al, or I catch it pretty fast.

I'm going to turn on approvals for all new users, since the email thing doesn't seem to be working as well as hoped. I am not at home now, but as soon as I can sit down this afternoon/evening, I'll get it taken care of.

On a slightly different note, we don't restrict mods to certain forums- if they want to be on more than one, or even all, we'll do it- but we try not to overwhelm any one person, and make them feel like they HAVE to read every forum- so in the past we've tried to let them tell us which forums they want to moderate. But if they ask for more, we'll add them.

New User Moderation is on now, but it's a little hard to tell sometimes which is a spammer and which is not. So if any gets through, just report them and we'll get rid of it.

I'm running some vb based sites now, and I can tell you in the admin panel there is an option called "Spam Management"

Within it, you can enable Akismet spam filtering. If anything looks like spam, it gets flagged and requires a moderator to approve before it's posted.

Simply enable this option, and set the limit to only look at users first 20 posts or so, and that will take care of all the spam we see.

This is built into vBulletin!

The version used here is vBulletin® v3.6.4. The upgrade to 3.7.3 might be free, at worst $200.

I don't think that would help- I'm fairly sure IB can afford to do whatever they need to this place- just have to get their attention. I'll keep working on it, and see what happens. In the meantime, this is taking all of 5-10 minutes out of my day to approve/lookup new users, so we'll just stuck with that for now.

And it seems to be working. I don't think I've seen any spam in several days. I don't don't know about the others.

It can be hard to tell which users are spammers. A lot seem fairly plausible that they're legit users. They even enter hobbies, AIM screen names, etc.

But yes, the site seems clean lately. So it's working. I just prefer automated systems to manual labor when possible :) Thanks for the hard work Elara.

It's BS, everytime I log onto this site I get hit w/ ads and what not... just started happening a week ago...
