View Full Version : Mazsport Type 1: some questions
tajabaho1 08-07-2008, 05:36 PM Hey guys, since I am a total nub at turbo thinging....... well, in a tuning sense anyways
I was wondering if there are anything wrong with these graphs
I went on a logging run yesterday night
btw, I have done other log runs before, in 3rd gear for example, the car boosts up to 7PSI, mostly it'll be around 6 PSI
in 2nd gear (the one I did the run in) however, it spooled to only 4 PSI, and it's not constant boost, it looks like im losing manifold pressure, it goes from 4 to 2 to 3 to 4 etc etc
here's the graphs

tajabaho1 08-07-2008, 06:07 PM also, the first few days that I got the turbo, it spooled to 7 PSI, always, always, but now no matter what gear, it only goes to 4 PSI, I have no clue why,
Psychofox 08-07-2008, 07:11 PM there's a leak somehwere
Yeah i think you got a leak too.
paulmasoner 08-07-2008, 07:51 PM i think he just Taja'd the install :)
we ruv you taj!
tajabaho1 08-07-2008, 08:23 PM there is a leak in the manifold? but how? I haven't done anything T.T
paulmasoner 08-07-2008, 08:25 PM they said a leak somewhere... maybe it is the mani, maybe not... have you gone back tio check every single nut and olt and fitting since installing?
thats a very important step
mysql 08-07-2008, 08:26 PM That's the classic symptom of installing the turbo backwards.
Psychofox 08-07-2008, 08:26 PM do you use a boost controller?
where do you tap your boost/vacuum signal?
rotarenvy 08-07-2008, 08:28 PM I've heard you should re-tighten all hose clamps after the first few drive cycles as the hoses shrink and change shape with heat and pressure.
maxxdamigz 08-07-2008, 10:12 PM My Greddy BOV which is the default Mazsport BOV leaked after install. We had to tighten it all the way down and then back it off some. It sounds like you are running with no EBC as I think the Mazsport kit ships with a 7 psi spring.
tajabaho1 08-07-2008, 10:15 PM ok, I retighted every single charge tube, and every single clamps
everything, I haven't tried the car yet, but should have no more leaks
I dont have a boost controller, I run a vaccum hose from the turbo to the wastegate, but that one is bent, it might have a leak in that tube, but i cant get to it since I don't have a jack (mine broke)
hopefully it's that and that it's minor, :D
maxxdamigz 08-07-2008, 10:26 PM well, if your signal to the WG is borked, underboosting might not be the symptom you'd see.....
tajabaho1 08-08-2008, 12:26 AM yea, I'd think that it would simply not spool at all is what I'm thinking
qtwre 08-08-2008, 02:59 PM If your wastegate wasn't getting a proper representation of the pressure being pushed by the turbo, it wouldn't open and you'd get too much boost.
When it doesn't see any pressure it's closed (to build boost), and it opens as pressure increases.
tajabaho1 08-08-2008, 03:07 PM I see, so there probably is a leak.........but where??!!
rotary.enthusiast 08-08-2008, 03:23 PM Is the spring tension on the WG adjustable?
chickenwafer 08-08-2008, 03:31 PM Fix your wastegate line now, before you drive anywhere. That's how motors go pop.
Did you try adjusting your blow-off valve? Double check to make sure no vacuum nipples are open.
tajabaho1 08-08-2008, 03:47 PM ok, I just came back from fixing the wastegate actuater vacuum line, I put a brand new line in and routed it differently + heatshielded it a bit more
I haven't messed with the BOV, mine is the HKS SSQV and it seems to be fine
I will re-tighten the boost gauge once I finish lunch just to make sure, cus that is the last thing I installed
Rofl , installing the turbo backwards.... Hope you didnt weld the compressor housing onto the downpipe :)
tajabaho1 08-09-2008, 12:44 AM you cant posssibly put it on backwards
you'll have to be epic Taj to do that
you cant posssibly put it on backwards
you'll have to be epic Taj to do that
Nah. That would just be a regular Taj. A regular Taj IS epic. ;)
whoneedspistons 08-09-2008, 01:00 AM so how did it turn out after you tightened everything...
chickenwafer 08-09-2008, 01:30 AM Do you hear any noises when under boost like air rushing (like a tire deflating rapidly)? Drive with the windows and try to hear it, it should be loud if you have a serious leak.
Also check your intercooler, I've seen phantom boost leaks from bad welds on an intercooler.
tajabaho1 08-09-2008, 03:42 AM ok, I tightened everything
turns out my manual boost gauge
is
epically
Tajed
like
seriously
Tajed
like, leaking
monstrously
not the vacuum line that it connects to
but the boost gauge it's self
god damn 20$ knock off ebay gauge!
I didn't buy it my self, someone bought it for me, sucksballz, glowshift should getsued
i used the int-X to log it again today
7 PSI like normal yo!
paulmasoner 08-09-2008, 03:43 AM ^^ why what happened??? did YOU touch it or something??
hehehe
good to hear, now get coils
alz0rz 08-09-2008, 03:48 AM lol, good thing i didn't get that glowshift gauge from the fs forum!
tajabaho1 08-09-2008, 06:07 PM ok well, I uninstalled it, the boost now goes up to 7......but it still varies insanely
so my guess is that I fucked the wastegate, or my coils......or something
mysql 08-09-2008, 06:09 PM what is the boost source? use the vfad nipple.
tajabaho1 08-09-2008, 06:10 PM I am using the Vfad nipple
dannobre 08-09-2008, 08:50 PM It's unlikely that you fu*Ked the wastegate :) It's quite difficult even for you
You need to get a Boost gauge, and a WBo2 .....
tajabaho1 08-09-2008, 09:24 PM I use my laptop as a boost gauge
chickenwafer 08-09-2008, 11:12 PM You still need a wideband O2 sensor, Taj, and some tuning. My guess is you're running the base map right now, which is really conservative and can still potentially do harm to your motor. I would stay out of boost until you get some professional tuning and a WB02
mysql 08-09-2008, 11:14 PM I use my laptop as a boost gauge
I use my desktop as a window to the world.
tajabaho1 08-09-2008, 11:52 PM I understand, I will try to stay out of boost
not that there is any left..........like seriously, there isn't any leak, and still, the turbo just doesn't spool up no more
sigh, that vaccuum line failed, I'll need to jack up the car tomorrow again and replace that vaccuum line
my motor is fine for now (compression good) the coils are ok, the sparkplugs aren't so good
I'm using the FD plugs that Scott sells on his website (as a matter of fact, I bought it from him) and one, if not two of them, are busted, since I can hear the leadings going fine (the first spark) but the second one I can hear a *tack* tack* *tack*
now, with a blown rotor, I figured the sould would be very wierd, but I never heard one before on an rx8
if it's anything like my old FD, it wouldn't whine anymore, but would be a highly disturbing clank at idle
those of you who had blown motor please tell me, in some type of word, how it sounds like
chickenwafer 08-10-2008, 12:01 AM Blown motors have all varying degrees of weird sounds. When mine blew, it just felt sluggish and didn't make any abnormal sounds.
Other times you can hear odd metallic sounds, like scraping. The most common is poor idle vacuum (under 16 inches without the A/C on or any load) and a sound similar to a big tractor, sometimes lots of vibration through the shifter.
tajabaho1 08-10-2008, 12:24 AM no vibration, -19mm HG idle, -17 sometimes
swoope 08-10-2008, 12:39 AM You still need a wideband O2 sensor, Taj, and some tuning. My guess is you're running the base map right now, which is really conservative and can still potentially do harm to your motor. I would stay out of boost until you get some professional tuning and a WB02
taja.
mr wafer has a hymee scan tool for sale.. you might invest in it!!
beers
swoope 08-10-2008, 12:41 AM no vibration, -19mm HG idle, -17 sometimes
well,
that means you likely dont have a blown motor..
but that does not mean you dont have a leak.. think for a second, you might have a connection that fails under boost??
beers
tajabaho1 08-10-2008, 03:40 AM tmr I will go get a jack (my stock jack got owned when my friend with an sr20 backed up over it)
and I will most likely replace the wastegate actuater vacuum line, because it is bent, and this is most likely causing it....same symptom as my friend's SR 20
I will also look into the charge tube that connects the turbo to the intercooler, cus that might have been knocked by the wheen hub
