View Full Version : August 4 at Shannonville
01Racing 07-25-2008, 01:26 PM We are going to Shannonville August 4 to do some final testing with the race car before the Aug 9-10 race weekend. It on both Pro and Long track and the track is open from 9am-5pm. Price is $160.00 for the whole day. We will be leaving the dealership at 7am and we will probably only stay at the track until 12 or 1pm to avoid traffic on the way home. I know a few of you have expressed interest and Kafka is coming for sure he says. Anyone else interested??? When not testing I would be happy to help anyone who is new or wants some pointers at the track.
Kafka 07-25-2008, 04:41 PM Al can you drive my car while i sleep on the way lol
nate340 07-27-2008, 03:47 PM ill be there, trying to find some tires before then. and is this just 8's or can i invite a friend with a VW

Kafka 07-28-2008, 12:37 AM What should I bring/prepare for these kind of events?
Do I need a hamlet? I got a motorcycle hamlet left over from my biking days...
Thanks.
01Racing 07-28-2008, 07:04 PM You dont need a hamlet but I would recommend a helmet (lol). They are not manditory, but I would sure wear one on the track.
Kafka 07-29-2008, 11:17 AM LOL ya this will be of shakespearean proportion! Spelling mistake for the epic phail haha
nate340 08-03-2008, 10:33 AM Another quick question, one of my friends works with a video production company and was wondering if its fine to bring the “crew” to do some taping?

Thief 08-05-2008, 10:38 AM Good job Josh. Now Al knows you've taken your car racing :D
Kafka 08-05-2008, 11:27 AM Don't quote me on this, but I believe racing is catagorized as a "timed event racing for a position" all we are doing is spirited driving in a legal setting. lol
ps I wont tell if you dont!
pss I just got asked to bring the car to the Meeting of the Mazda's, so the test day will be between July 20 and Aug 6.
Nope....see the above quote lol
01Racing 08-05-2008, 11:35 AM Racing? Who was racing? I dont know about you guys but I was at an advanced driving school yesterday! What happened to the link with all the other pictures?

Anyone have good suggestion of good in-car video cam? Thanks!!!
01Racing 08-06-2008, 06:40 AM Josh, thank you so much for all your help! You did an amazing job for someone who had never been on the track before. You probably learned more about driving in your 1st 15 minutes than have in last 10 years! (lol) You help in doing all the video/pics and working on the car is much appreciated, you are now an official member of the team!
Kafka 08-06-2008, 10:29 AM Thanks Al! I see you as a guy with passion in auto racing, and I think the chacnes to be able to become part of it are rare in life.
I am old enough now to know whats teh real shxt and poser...and I am sick of posing...I will do that when I got money to dirve a Porsche/Ferrari lol
I am glad I got the car from you in Scarboro Mazda. It really open my eyes!
Anyway, please post the racing schedule for the reamining season. I may get my friend to take better photos for you folks (Its a she and she is good...I think lol)

Mmph... I just checked out acouple of those video's. I think I just wet myself.
Anyways.. there are a number of DIY stablizer systems out there... this one's for a bike.. but if you dig a bit more I'm sure you could come up with some others

Thanks man...that instructables site is cool.
Problem is...its kinda too complicated for a race car...and what happen when shxt hit the fan?
Anyway, I will dig more into the internets...
Kafka 08-06-2008, 01:29 PM put a foam mat under then cam?
it should absorb alot of vibrations.
Already got some kind of foam...its a 10mm soft plastic plate...but the vibration of the frame is huge.
Maybe its the mounting point......I will try to take more photos tonight of the mounting unit and post it.

I DID! Thats why I know its a she!
Footman 08-06-2008, 01:39 PM What you need is an engineered solution :)

So walk the talk. Any suggestion?
Footman 08-06-2008, 02:04 PM I wasn't saying me.... I'm in electrical, not mechanical!

Ok how about this. Find a good brand of camera that is readily available for consumer market with medium to low price range which satisfy the following requirements:
a)Long battery life
b)Vibration / distortion cancelling feature
c)Rugged design for extreme heat and impact
b) and c) is very important.
Thank you.
Footman 08-06-2008, 02:46 PM If it's a camera with a movie mode that you are looking for (as opposed to a camcorder).
you will want one that has optical image stabilization (many cameras have this now). You will also want a wide angle because you will be in a narrow part inside the car and you want to capture it all.
As for battery life, most cameras will last in movie mode for more than 1 hour continuously.
The one camera that comes to mind to me is the Panasonic DMC-LX3 or the FX500
Both feature 25 mm wide angle lenses I believe, and have optical I.S.
Kafka 08-06-2008, 03:19 PM The FX500 got MEGA O.I.S. (Optical image stabilizer) ... but will that be applicable on VIDEO?
No budget for camcorder :P
Footman 08-06-2008, 03:32 PM yes it applies in movie mode.
I highly recommend the FX500.
Kafka 08-06-2008, 03:41 PM Thanks footman...that one sure looks nice.

01Racing 08-06-2008, 07:44 PM Joshua is now the Director of Communications for ABR (Alan Balinsky Racing)
Thief 08-06-2008, 11:40 PM Shiiiiitttt. I want the title of director. In my company, I'd be making a nice 6 figure salary with that!

Check out the samsung NV7 good price..
and features:
OPS (Optical Picture Stabilization) uses an Image Sensor Shift mechanism that moves the sensors in the opposite direction to the movement of the lens (caused by camera shake) and corrects the shake.
and
ASR (Advanced Shake Reduction) system that is unique to Samsung, in addition to brand new OPS (Optical Picture Stabilization) technology for double anti-shake protection.
It's in the $200 range.

Hell, Josh is making 1.5M per year plus car and bonuses!

ASR is just electronic stabilization by changing the bumping up ISO sensitivity and shutter values. It's essentially useless. The only thing useful in image stabilization really is just the optical elements being moved.
Thief 08-07-2008, 09:46 AM Hell, Josh is making 1.5M per year plus car and bonuses!
Who did he have to fellate for that kinda scratch?
01Racing 08-07-2008, 10:24 AM ME! Actually Im sure you all know its strictly a volunteer thing, as is everything to do with amateur racing lol.
Thief 08-07-2008, 10:32 AM ME! Actually Im sure you all know its strictly a volunteer thing, as is everything to do with amateur racing lol.
LOL of course. But it'd be nice to have business cards that reflect the title.
Kafka 08-07-2008, 10:38 AM Thief when you see the flame spitting from your car on the track, you will feel like a million bucks!
And you are always WELCOME to fellate MY exhaust tip after I did some hot laps...LOL
Al, flickr account set up already. Will upload tonight / tomorrow...same for the 900mb video ...will do my conversion and split it up for youtube upload soon.
We will see about those cards...but the major thing here is to make it fun and worthwile and finishing / winning the races....
Kafka 08-07-2008, 11:00 AM btw Al, the other video with your original camera is not THAT bad...for this weekend we may just use that one.
However, we do need a better solution in the long run...
http://www.chasecam.com/catalog/8/cameras
are cool but major bling...
Did you ask in the Canadian Auto Racing forums? Actually whats their forum address so I can post whore there? Thanks!
Footman 08-07-2008, 11:05 AM FYI, I measured the exhaust tips temperature with a Fluke digital gauge several weeks ago as part of my experiments.
After some aggressive driving home from work. The ambient temperature was 31 C. The exhaust tips measured 138 C.
Fellating the MS Exhaust at 138 C will result in your lips looking like something from the movie Eli Roth's Hostel.

Under track condition, the temperature will raise way above 138C, and hence the flame spitting out during shifts from my car.
Thief's lips will burn. and melt into my exhaust tip....with part of the teeth melted as well...imagine that...omfg. :Eyecrazy:
Footman 08-07-2008, 11:22 AM Now this is turning into graphic horror fest!!! But I like those movies!
Thief 08-07-2008, 11:40 AM Josh, you should be fellating my exhaust tips. Just remember that they're Greddys. And I can fist them easily.
01Racing 08-07-2008, 03:01 PM Fellating exhaust tips.........................you guys have wayyyyyy to much time on your hands lol

I know that...but every bit helps=)
Footman 08-07-2008, 06:30 PM It won't at much unfortunately. The shutter is left open all times during video mode. The ISO setting is fixed during video mode. It doesn't dynamically change ISO's
01Racing 08-07-2008, 06:49 PM Geez we are here again working late on the race cars and others and you guys are still online!
01Racing 08-08-2008, 01:59 PM Just wanted all of you to know how great Joshua (Kafka on the site) has been to my race team and dealership! He has taken on the task of updating and creating a whole media program for us and done an amazing job! It is all volunteer time and I really appreciate and applaud his efforts! Check his creations out of YouTube or at www.abrracing.com
Footman 08-08-2008, 02:32 PM if only I had tools and machinery, I'd fabricate a custom video cam mount for your cockpit!
Kafka 08-08-2008, 03:54 PM Al: Thanks for taking me in...I was just a fob hijacking corollas in Asia...now I am in a legit race team! LOLz
btw, we need some abrracing stickers ... so poser like me can feel hardcore. Good way of raising profile as well...(selling it to raise fund too?)
Come to think of it...is there ANY dealership in Toronto has a freakin race team?
