I bought my wife a set of plates for her birthday from the DVLA and am now wondering what I need to do before putting them on the car. i.e.

* I've got the V750 form and looks pretty straightforward to fill in

* Looks like I need to go to a local DVLA office with her log book etc. What forms do I need to take along? Surely I don't need her tax disk?

* Once I've been to the DVLA office, what happens? Do they replace the tax disk? If so, do they do it there and then or do they send it in the post? What about the old tax disk?

Just asking because my local DVLA office is miles away and I don't want to waste a trip.

You will need the Tax disc, as they will change the reg number there and then on the tax disc. They say its illegal to drive a car with a diff no on the car to the tax disc.

....When I went to Reading last week to put mine on my car, I took

the V750 form
the V5 form
the tax disc
I had already had the assignment fee paid (as I presume you do too, otherwise you would need that too. I think its all on the back of the V750 form isn't it? Also I found it a LOT easier to get the car registered first and then assign it. That way, you get two sets of plates from your dealer plus a chance to drive around in a 53 plate first and then put the cherished one on.

In Reading, they give you a new disc plus let you keep the old one - they've got a new system that cancels the first one immediately so you can't get your dosh back on it, but also allows you to drive round with the old disc until you get it done. They take the top part of the V5 too and stamp the bottom part with the new reg on it for you to keep (in case the police need to see proof until the new V5 turns up).

MUCH easier to do in person.

Let me know if you want directions to the place in Reading - its right by all the car dealers and opposite the Ford Garage on the Basingstoke Road....
